I'm not the master of time attacking or anything, but it seems like it could be done even faster. I'm not putting it down at all; just giving advice so all that I say should be taken as helpful for everyone and not otherwise. I don't know how hard it is for this game, or rather any game more advanced than the average NES game. Obviously things can almost always be done faster because of finding out of new things to go faster and people asking questions about their method in each area of the game. But I imagine if time attacks were possible on a game like Metroid Prime, there would be even more things to consider and there will ALWAYS be room for improvement even with emulation. Like on the first version of your time attack I watched when you are running across the spikes getting hit and jumping to get to the statue that carries you, your last jump just barely escaped the tip of the spikes. But on the second time attack you made much more distance. What made that difference? So, I definitely don't know as much about doing things fast in SM, but it seems like there are a lot of stops and stuff like when you run and then jump and then land; when you land you stop. I'm aware that if there is absolutely no way to avoid this, then that's life. It's just that I am always in like this huge JET SPEED MOTION GOGOGOGO SPEED RUN WOOOO attitude when I watch these things. Or at least that's what I like to think. I always imagine when Samus (hehe I said Samus) lands which makes her stop that there would be some kinda game mechanics to avoid it like rolling into a ball to bounce and still have some speed and then unrolling and then gaining more speed again and so on. Also, in the beginning when falling off the ledges to reach the bottom of the screen. Samus runs off the ledge in order to do so. Is this really the fastest way? Can't she jump off to gain speed rather than walking off and having the slow starting-to-fall momentum take over each time? Again with the ball: What about rolling into a ball more throughout the whole thing? Would some timing/ball mechanics make it faster? Then there's the ball bomb and how you don't need to have it right next to the wall in order for the piece to blow up, like in Zelda 1. I notice this is done sometimes but then not other times. I KNOW it will be faster if it was done every time. I would do it, BUT I remember I think it was TSA saying for Ocarina of Time that he could have done the z target and side jump thing across Hyrule Field and other long distance places since it actually is faster, but he said he didn't since it would only cut a few seconds off the whole game or something. I don't know how hard it is to do all this or how many more redos it would take and frustration and argh I want to kill myself, but whatever. Just throwing it out. It already seems like sometimes creating these movies has that kind of frustration as it is. Another question. Can another shot be pulled off most of the times just before the squid boss (hehe I said squid boss) closes its eye and disappears? Like I thought I remember one time you shot off the screen just in time to get one more shot in this one time. But I just watched the second one and it seems there were like 3 times or more this could have been done, since with emulation you should be able to tell where it's going to come from.

Watch this movie: <URL> and you'll see some pretty nice "perfection". Edited by Bisqwit: The URL was not meant to be distributed. It sucked the bandwidth of the server in question. Question Brightstar if more information is needed.

http://www.filespace.org/blip/SuperMetroid_4704x100_cheated.rar.torrent (right-click, save as) Here's the information I have from IRC: this was an emulated run that someone attempted to submit to SDA as a legit run. Fortunately, no one was fooled, but it does seem to have caused a bit of a stir. I've added a disclaimer to the beginning, and the file is named "cheated", just so there's no confusion: this was a blatant attempt at cheating. It's a shame it's such a good movie, too. NB: I was told there'd be no objection to distributing this as a .torrent. The secrecy was to try and shield the original site from excessive traffic.

woow.. some are so upset about emulated runs ! Can't really understand them ... Im gonna watch this, just like i watched smokeys' or redscarlet's ones, keeping in mind the difference between normal & emulated runs ! :]

It's a shame he/she tried to submit it as a real speedrun, cause it was a nice time attack.

That was the best freaking time attack ever. He even did things to make it not be the fastest run ever so people could try to beat it (all the things I am talking about involved animals). Though there were still instances of what I was talking about earlier with the gaining momentum before falling down and the bombs not being so close to the wall thing, THAT HE DIDN'T EVEN DO, EVEN THOUGH he was good about it in many cases. I look forward to a :45 minute 100% time attack =) though there is a slim chance that is happening any time soon.

bag of magic I went to your link and saw their comments. and it makes me feel very very sad to see such greezy and haters who simply cant accept the fact Samus Aran run destroyed complety Red Scarlets run. they complain about that he/she used a emulator etc and its easier to perform this kind of run other than a legite runs. Those morons have completly forgotten that Samus Arans primary mission is to get the fastest possible 100% run using his/her tools. Now if he/she would try to play or do a legite run without any assistance of the tools etc how many times must Samus Aran play to achive that time? 545987231 times perhaps? But enough of those haters this timeattack was like Bisqwits totally sick sick run of Megaman1 everybody should download it because its the ultimate run (and would u know only Samus Aran can improve on this run because there are some segments which can be done better).

Okey. After some thinking, new ideas, Comments, Suggestions and so on I try to do this run again. Re-doing my first route, some changes in the route. e.g I take Speedbooster and Wave before I take HiJump. In this one I will use the Spike/Enemy booster glitch. If it is a glitch or not, I dont care.. it is quite usefull ;) I have just beaten Phantoom and a little further. And If I am comparing with my first run, this run is about 53 seconds faster already. Goodie. ;)

Anon perhaps you dont have the proper codec to veiw the avi file. Install ffdshow 2004 (it contains all the important codecs you need to view the latest codecs demands on avi files such as divx and xvid etc)

Thanks; that got that Contra III video running as well. Too bad that I've seen it already via emulator. ...if only I hadn't deleted that Street fighter 2010 attack because I thought something was up with my torrent... twice. v_v And I'm stuck with 56k. Heh.

that was a pretty sweet run, but for a few months, i think ive seen enough metroid speedruns ... GJ though oh and , wtf are the people gamefaqs bitching about, they seperate timeattacks ( emulator ) from console runs ( well, arc does, bisquit doesnt i think )

Just a thought. There are 2 PowerMissiles and 1 energy tank in Madridia that is practical in my way and could be quite useful. Take these might save time: At the annoying little snake So I can hyperspeed nealy at Draygoon And Draygoon. This can also saves time at Ridley later when im feeding him with missiles. Anyway.. ill test it.

Great videos guys. They're so neat to watch. I've found that the Varia suit is completely obsoleted when you get the Gravity Suit. I've used Frenom's replay to get the gravity suit before the Varia suit. This is what I found: Normal suit: full damage Varia Suit: - Protection from Norfair's hot rooms - Half damage (NOT cumulative!) Gravity Suit: - Protection from Norfair's hot rooms - Protection from lava - Quarter damage (NOT cumulative!) - Liquidwalk Like I tried to say before, they're completely different suits. I haven't tested it on MB, but odds are that the Varia suit won't suddenly make a difference then. The eye beam is just damage, and the Varia suit doesn't layer protection with the Gravity suit. Frenom, I've also noticed that you're afraid of the lava when you have the Gravity suit. You jump off the floor in the room where the lava rises from the floor. You don't have to anymore. I've figured out the damage values for all of the weapons at Samus' disposal, except for the murder beam, hyper beam, and the grappler technique. (water boss) You can't hurt bosses with normal shots or bombs, so these values are all for charged shots. I hope it helps you fine tune your boss strategies. Missile - 100 Super Missile - (300 on Kraid and Miridia, 600 on phantoon and Ridley) Power Bomb - 200 Edit: These damage values were found at Phantoon. They appear to be the same for all bosses. Plain Charge - 60 Charged Ice - 90 Charged Wave - 150 Charged Spazer - 120 Charged I + W - 180 Charged I + S - 180 Charged W + S - 210 Charged I + W + S - 200 (Actually does less...?) Edit: These values were found at Ridley. You can only have the plasma for ridley, so that's all that really matters, right? =) Charged Plasma - 550 !! Charged P + I - 600 Charged P + W - 750 Charged P + I + W - 900 Kraid's HP - 1000 Phantoon's HP - 2500 (Unfortunately, super missiles make him use the whip attack...) Maridia's HP - 6000 Ridley's HP - 18000 Lastly, I wonder if the charged bomb technique would be useful on bosses. It could destroy several of the little things that either Phantoon or the water boss throw around at once, as opposed to firing multiple shots to get through. It would be neat to see it used against Phantoon's flames, when he's on the ceiling dropping fire or using the fire whip.

Actually, MB is an exception wrt Varia and Gravity suit. At least, her brain beam thingy is. The Giant Metroid Glitch mentioned in the Glitch Guide on Gamefaqs somewhat depends on it (although I guess you might be able to do it with reserve tanks). My brother, when trying the glitch out for himself, confirmed that. You can read about the glitch on GameFAQS. It's in the as-mentioned Glitch Guide, section V, glitch F. Also, to triple-check myself, I played Frenom's TA, stopping the movie as MB was charging her beam, and unequipped only the Varia suit. I died.

Correct damage values, in the order the game keeps track of them: 0. Normal beam : 10 1. Wave beam : 25 2. Ice beam : 15 3. Ice/Wave beam : 30 4. Spazer beam : 20 5. Wave/Spazer beam : 35 6. Ice/Spazer beam : 30 7. Wave/Ice/Spazer beam : 50 8. Plasma beam : 75 9. Wave/Plasma beam / Speed Echoes : 125 / 2,048 10. Ice/Plasma beam : 100 11. Wave/Ice/Plasma beam : 150 12. Missiles : 50 13. Super Missiles : 150 14. Bombs / Space/Time Beam : 30 / 45 per 1/3 of second 15. Power Bombs : 100, can hit twice 16. Speed Running : 250 a frame 17. Super Jump : 75 a frame 18. Screw Attack : 1,000 a frame 19. ALL Charge beams / Hyper Beam / Special Beams : 3x beam combo / 500 / 150 (45 for ice) 20. Psuedo Screw Attack : 100 Most enemies take 2x the listed damage. Spore Spawn takes 3x from charged beams, I think, and only 1x from super missiles (odd, since you can't normally bring super missiles into the fight). Ridley takes 4x from super missiles. And a quick note: Space/Time beam is considered a bomb (14) because it contains Plasma (+8), Spazer (+4), and Ice (+2). I haven't gotten around to measuring the murder beam and it's type, though... it wasn't discovered when I made this list. >_> ::EDIT:: The murder beam's type is charge beam, simply because you're required to charge before you shoot it. Slipped my mind when I posted.
