Update : I'm not doing the run anymore see page 21 for talking about Erim's run or the Final Fantasy 6 thread for Catastrophe's run. It's a crazy idea but since there's a discussion about Chrono Trigger and Mario RPG... FF3 could even be shorter than CT and MRPG. The World of Balance is linear but World of Ruin offers a lot of possibilities. Here are some points about a possible runs : -Get sprint shoes ASAP -Skip unuseful treasures -Use the Vanish/Doom combo to kill boss instantly -Use sketch glitch to get powerful items early (Scimitars, Aegis Shields, lot of money !) -Manipulate randomness in battles to hit early with criticals -Manipulate randomness to skip random battles (if possible) The interesting point is World of Ruin. You can finish the game with only 3 characters (Celes, Edgar and Setzer). However, the final dungeon and final boss would be hell. Each additionnal character requires a subquest : -Terra requires a small subquest, interesting -Sabin requires a small subquest, interesting as he would speed up Figaro castle. -Relm's subquest is long, but the sketch glitch could provide a lot of powerful item -Strago has no subquest but requires Relm -Cyan's subquest is interesting but too long -Locke subquest is required for the most powerful magic and equipment in the game but his dungeon is too long. -Mog's subquest takes some time. However controlling the ramdoness of his dances would be powerful. Also, there would be no more encounters with the Moogle Charm relic. Maybe interesting -Gau's dungeon is quitelong. Getting his special attacks need some time. -Umaro takes time and is useless -Shadow is a problem. With the sketch glitch, he will have very powerfull items to throw at the enemy. The final boss could be killed in one hit if the rumor about throwing the Atma Weapon is true. However getting him means waiting for him at the floating continent and doing his subquest. This would take a lot of time -Gogo require a quite long dungeon. I might try this run. Do someone knows the actual world record ?

The low-level record as far as I know is a mixture of 6s, 7s, and 8s. I don't know how many party members were used in WoR. As far as the time record, I don't know about what the record is but if you're not in the WoR by 5:30 you're too slow. Twin Galaxies will have a record soon. It was sent in a few weeks ago by Rodrigo and is pending review.

setzer alone would be doing the vast majority of the damage with his dice, which I imagine would be controlled.

Joker Doom would be far more useful for Setzer. Though, the slots are rigged so that it doesn't work against certain bosses. The throwing the Atma Weapon rumor is false, as it can't even be thrown in the first place. Also, in Low Level Games, every character is obtained and every boss defeated. Gau, Mog, and Sabin are probably the easiest and quickest obtainable characters in the second half of the game. One could rig the random battles of the Veldt so that Gau obtains all the more useful rages. Mog's Moogle Charm will eliminate the threat of random battles, so it'll more than make up for taking the minute or so obtaining him.

you could finish the game with Sabin alone, just get an "Offering" and a "Genji Glove', and with good attack, he would deal 9999 the eight times he attacks, i remember once to have killed the final boss with one attack. I think that if you use the Atma Weapon you would deal a good damage too (with Celes), but you would need to finish a subquest to obtain it.

Atma Weapon does damage based on HP, so in a speedrun (= low levels) it's useless.

If I remember correctly there's an item that higher HP. Muscle belt, I think it is.

Yeah, but the Atma Weapon is a good Sword, and would be very useful if you have enough HP (9999, for maximum damage), it's not hard to level up in this game after the End of The World.

Atma weapon damage is based on level, and %current hp of max hp. So just raising your max hp won't really help. Also there is nothing special about using sabin with genji glove and offering. Infact he would be a poor choice because his weapons are not of top notch damage. There was a very advanced thread for speed run in this game at gamefaqs recently. Most of it was over my head since I haven't played this in a while, but I think they were on target to easily beat 8 hours. Unfortunatly it didn't get bumped and looks like it is gone, but you could probably ask them to repost some of it, I am sure the writers have it saved as it is practically a faq.

The current speedrun FAQ has a completion time of under-10. Under-8 is very possible. I wonder what Rodrigo's time is?

I think we shouldn't underestimate the value of manipulating luck in this game - I imagine the critical hit/avoidance of monsters in this game would take off at least 4 hours from any current record. It might be worthwhile to get Gogo, as he could double any high damage dealt, and obtaining him would be quick. Leveling up might be wise though, that could be easily managed assuming randomness manipulation to get a bunch of T-rexaurs and so on and making sure they dont do ultima :).

If you're talking about the monsters in the forest north of the Veldt, they don't know Ultima; they know Meteor (how would a bunch of dinosaurs, even enhanced ones, know that?) Meanwhile, don't forget the desert south of Maranda for the 10 point Cactuars (and their 1,000 point Blow Fish/1000 Needles attack). Also, how can you get the Offering at such a low level? As I understand it, the monster guarding it is pretty strong, and can lay your party flat quickly if you're not prepared, plus the cutscene before that is somewhat lengthly. If you decide to get the Gem Box from the Tower of Fanatics and bet it at the Colisseum, you have to go up that horrible thing without much defense, and without the ability to physically attack.

unless you have the moogle charm. Cast berserk on the boss of the fanantics tower to keep him from changing his barrier, but you'll probably need life 3 to survive his ultima.

...which, of course, you can only get by finishing Lock's scenario and getting the Phoenix esper (and learning it, which takes a bit of time).

I'm planning to exploit the sketch glitch to get powerful items. MasterZed at Gamefaq forum made some quite interesting discoveries about this glitch. So far I've done 9 minutes of the run (70 % cutscenes) Good news : The battle timer seems to be set before the battle start. By delaying the battle a few frame, I can get Preemptive attack. Bad news : No luck with manipulation of random encounter rate yet. Before I continue, I need to know the following information : -If I skip the treasure chests in the cave of Narshe and wait for World of Ruin, I can get more powerful items. What are these items ? -Do I need to get Mog in the World of Balance in order to get him in the World of Ruin ?

Viewer: Brachosaurs cast Ultima. Defeating KatanaSoul for dummies - shortest book ever Cast Muddle. Instant Offering. Surviving Magimaster's Ultima 1) Equip someone with DragoonBoots and have them Jump shortly before he dies. 2) Finish him with a Palidor summon (Everyone Jumps). Palidor is found on the beach where you previously caught fish for Cid. 3) Cast Life 3 on someone. Requires Phoenix or Gau's Rhinox rage. 4) Cast Rasp and Osmose until he runs out of MP. Takes bleeding forever. ---- Jyzero: Atom Edge's walkthrough (it's at GameFAQs) marks all items that are different in the WoR with an asterisk. It doesn't matter if you get Mog or not in the WoB. Note that the sketch glitch is fixed in v1.1 of the game, and doesn't exist at all in the Japanese version. If you're planning on using it make sure you're using US v1.0. ---- I'm thinking of having a go at this game myself, but it'll have to wait until I've finished with Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Which has hit an unexpected delay... I found a shortcut, but it's either barely impossible or barely possible, and I can't figure out which. GAH!).

I'm messing around with the sketch glitch and I just got 256 Illuminas by sketching Zone Eater ! The is a problem however. In order to prevent crashing, I need to save and reset, something i think isn't allowed with movie recording unless there is a secret soft reset command. EDIT: It's scary. Some glitches cause Snes9x to glitch. EDIT: Sold a glitched item for 2 million GP!

Yep. It may be hard to do on a keyboard, though. Keyboards have trouble when several buttons are pushed down at the same time. The Charm Bangle is probably well worth getting. The Charm Bangle will reduce the rate of encounters you get. I don't know if the effect is cumulative, if it is, it would be worth getting 2 if possible. If not, there are places where your party gets split up, and having a Charm Bangle for each team will help. It can be found during the Banquet, and afterwards if you are good enough. It can also be fought for in the colleseum, but by then you can get the moogle charm. I think it would be worth exploiting instant death spells, such as stone, death, and X-Zone. A little save/loading will make sure they always hit. Monsters or bosses that can't normally be hit with instant death can be made invisible, then hit. Other spells/abilities worth using, IMO, are: Regen- need less healing. If it saves you 2 healing spells, or an after battle heal, it's probably worth it. Also, may be used to poison undead. Safe/Shell - need less healing. If it saves you 2 healing spells, it's probably worth it. Poison - Free damage for long fights. Bio - Even better than poison. I dunno if monsters can have multiple poisons at once. Rhinox Rage - Life 3, plain and simple. Edgar's poisoning tools- They poison monsters. How sweet. Sabin's Blitzes- I think Sabin always knows these. Abuse bum rush to no end. Pheonix downs for any undead creature or boss. The life spell also works wonders. Magicite- Save/Load to get the Esper you want. Abusing the Esper level bonuses will be ever important. Siren(10), Shoat(10), Terrato(30), and Bahamut(50) give HP bonuses. These would be very handy to make good use of the Atma weapon. Decide who will bear the Atma weapon, and give them these bonuses first thing. Ifrit, Bismark, and Raiden give Vigor bonuses. Vigor makes a big difference with dealing physical damage. The effects max out at 128 Vigor. Caution- many of Sabin's blitzes are based on magic power, and not Vigor. Bum rush is magic based. Tritoch, Zoneseek, Maudin and Stray give magic power. I cannot emphasize how cool it is to heal your entire party for 3000HP with a simple Cure. :) I know an FAQ at www.gamefaqs.com has some formulas for how damage works. It may be worth studying them, to decide who will be the most effective characters to use. Fun facts: Physical evade% does nothing, because of a bug in the game. Magical Evade% deals with both physical and magical attacks. When it reaches 128%, you can dodge everything, except for 1000 needles and a few others. Maxing this out will make you invincible for almost every fight, so it will be very important. When Gau is equipped with full Imp armor and turned into an imp, he gets a perfect 255 defence. All physical attacks will do 1 damage to him. It's not very useful, but it's fun to know. :)

Are you sure? I've read nowhere where that happens. Raising the raw level of your character will make them more powerful, even if no other stats go up. Here's an excerpt from the Algorithm guide at GameFAQs:
Vigor: Higher vigor increases damage done by physical attacks (see section 2.1 Damage calculation). Raising Vigor over 128 with relics and equipment does no more damage than having a Vigor of 128. Monsters do not have individual Vigor stats; instead, their vigor is randomly determined at the beginning of combat as : [56..63]

Stamina: Stamina increases you chance of blocking most instant death attacks. (see section 2.2 Hit Determination, step 5) Stamina increases the amount of HP gained by Tintinabar (see section 5.17), and Regen (see section 2.7 Status effects), as well as the damage done by poison and seizure (see section 2.7 Status Effects). As with Vigor, monsters do not have individual Stamina stats; a monster's Stamina is figured as follows: Stamina = (Max HP / 512) + 16. If this number is greater than 40, then the monster's stamina is 40 instead. Mag. Pwr: Mag. Pwr increases damage done by magical attacks (see section 2.1 Damage Calculation). Unlike Vigor, increasing Mag. Pwr over 128 is more effective.
Aw man! I forgot about desparation attacks. That will have to be abused to it's fullest. :)

Some people are saying that evade won't do nothing. I know there's couple version of that game. Maybe the reason I think it helps really to block attacks. (I usually play that game on real SNES) Or maybe it was an illusion since the majority of items that boost evade also boost MBlock. Anyway I'm pretty sure Stamina increase attacks power but maybe not as much as vigor. Anyway do as you wish ;P

Evade does nothing on the original FF6, instead, MBlock is the stat that lets you evade physical and magic attacks. If it's at 128, everything the monsters do to you will miss if they don't use "Ignore Evade" attacks. I think the PSX version fixes this, and there's also a patch for the SNES ROM.
