Hi! First time poster here, just wanted to let everyone know I submitted a Bionic Commando run. Famtasia timed it at 00:17:49 / 64125 Frames. This was always one of my favorite games as a kid. I really enjoyed replaying it, although recording and re-recording can be a bit trying. I may need to refine it, but I hope to move onto playing the Japanese version which is harder.

I'll publish it when I get the name information from the one who made it.

I haven't played through it yet, but I know there are many more enemy soldiers to fight.
I'm waiting for your Bionic Commando timeattack :)
Suddenly I feel nervous! I hope people like it!

Well, I made a run-through of the Japanese version. Definitely harder. Takes a little longer, although I'm sure I can do better. On the plus side, I didn't take any damage in this run, not even on that last guy during the escape, who always seemed to grab me in the US version!

No need to be nervous i liked it ;)) I have played through Bionic Commando many times in my childhood and it was very interesting to see on which order you play levels and which do you skip doing a timeattack

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. I just wanted to say that I submitted a run on the Japanese version, but it was a little longer than my US run and Bisqwit felt it was too similar. Anyway, I've taken his words to heart and I'm trying to improve my time. Hopefully this new run will replace my US version, as I think everyone will really like this because the Japanese version is more difficult and I'm taking more risks. If anyone wants to see my first Japanese run, I can send you the fmv.

The Japanese game is very different with enemy placement and in a few areas with even level layout. There are also secret areas and other secrets that are only accessable in the Japanese. Running the Japanese game should be quicker than running the US version, though, because Area 9 can be skipped in the Japanese but not in the US. I won't give the method... but the Japanese run I have (in FMV) is 17:06. I know the US version can be done in under 17:30, but I wonder how fast the Japanese can be, and how much of a difference Area 9 makes versus the workaround? One other 'major' change in the playthrough is that it takes a bit more skill to get the communicator in Area 15 in the Japanese because you can't destroy the barrier with a normal shot (you have to glitch through it). But that doesn't take any more time, it's just a difference in the run. Oh, and the Twin Galaxies rules do NOT allow A+B+START, so it would be interesting to see a run that (at the very least) completed Area 7 with the 3-Way instead of the Rocket Launcher. EDIT: A Japanese run would be a bit more fun to watch, I think, because movement is allowed in the Japanese version while the cores are exploding, so you can do grapple tricks that you don't have time for anywhere else in the otherwise wasted time..

I'd love to see that run you have. Can you share it with us or send it to Bisqwit?

I found a way around the barrier in my as-yet-unpublished Japanese run. Looks cool too.

It's not that interesting, only slower as the 3-way is a much weaker weapon. This means spending more time shooting the giant robot guard and the reactor to end the level. The only advantage the 3 way gives is it shoots through shields, like the armored tanks that attack in the beginning of Area 7. But it's just as easy, and in my opinion cooler, to evade them.

I have two Japanese runs. One beats all levels and gets all secrets, 100% completion, in 58 minutes or something like that, with tons of extras and tricks. And one is the 17:06 speed run. Since I didn't make them, I don't know whether they should be on this site without asking the author for permission.. but the speed run one is at http://www.geocities.co.jp/Playtown-Denei/3370/Capcom.htm (look for the one with Super Joe's signature in the screenshot).

There are two ways around it. The slower and cooler-looking one involves going under it, and the faster way involves grappling through it. Aim your wire at the ground tile where the two barriers meet, and when you swing over while contracting you should "hit" the barrier and instead of bouncing back, bounce forward. I'm really interested in doing a video of this game myself.. I've done a clean run (no replays) in the US version doing optional areas in 24 minutes (I've never run the optimal path), and there's someone on the GameFAQs board (who has the Twin Galaxies record) who's trying to get sub-18-minutes now. I want to compete with him... ^_^ We've both been able to do some parts that were in your video a bit faster, but there are parts you do faster too, so we can all learn from each other and get a better overall run. I want to see under 17:30 on the US and under 17 in Japan!

Boco, the link you posted is not a speed run. It is a "no damage" run. He takes his sweet frigging time, actually, watching every cutscene and reading every word of dialogue. He then goes through each and every stage, slowly but surely, killing guys and collecting items he doesn't really need. I had actually stumbled onto that a few days ago, hoping it was a speed run so I could learn something from watching it. I didn't. I've seen the trick to go through the barrier in Area 15, but I never actually tried it. I went under it. If you don't want to share that speed run you have, could you at least describe how to skip Area 9? Is it as simple as skipping the barrier in Area 7, and therefore you don't need the 3-way from Area 9?

Ah, it was the wrong one? Sorry. If it wasn't there, then I don't know where I found this. Here's the run: http://www.geocities.com/boco_xlvii/hitler.zip Famtasia 5.10 is required.. if you can't find it, I'll upload it, too. You should be able to figure out how to skip Area 9 from this video, of course. EDIT: Also, sdkess just got 17:58 on a clean run, and 18:47 on a run without A+B+START, both taped. If a real player gets within 10 seconds of a time attack.... :-þ

Your link is broken. Maybe you shouldn't call it "Hitler.zip" ^_^

No, it's just Geo****ties. The workaround is to drag the link to the address bar or to C&P the link into the address bar. If you click the link, Geo****ties will think you're hotlinking from another site (whcih you are) and deny you access because you're not looking at ads.

Viewed the clip...very educational. Obviously he does some things faster, and I never heard of that bizarre shortcut in Area 17. But I definitely do some things faster than he did, and not just using the ABSTART quick-exit. Well, given this information I am confident I will produce the fastest Bionic Commando/Hitler no fukkatsu run yet!

The two biggest secrets cut in the US version are in Area 17 and Area 7. Only the Area 17 one can save you time, though.

Well, it's time for a status update, as I know you are all waiting with baited breath for my new time attack. [/sarcasm] The good news is that I am way ahead of all previous versions recorded/discussed on these forums. Between what I already knew, and the new techniques revealed to me, I can definitely complete this attack in well under 17 minutes. The bad news is that I have to start over because one of my early decisions to save time has, in fact, slowed me down tremendously. The issue at hand is trying to avoid the frequent top-view segments which are triggered by contact with enemy trucks. These battles are brief but not very entertaining and I feel they are an unwelcome departure from the game's signature "arm-swinging platform" gameplay. It seems that the Japanese run linked to by Boco (above) is most likely the fastest possible route, although I have yet to determine if the incredible secret in Area 17 is actually faster than completing Area 9, which is a pretty short stage. Bottom line: this won't be as captivating as the Zelda debate, nor will it involve the scrutiny of a Mega Man game, but it's going to be pretty cool when it's all finished.

Bionic Commando has this one little wrapping glitch. I wonder if it could be used for benefit somewhere. https://files.tasvideos.org/bionictest.avi (size: 2 MB) [alt]when you use the grabbing tool near the screen edge, you can grab things that are on the opposite side of the screen, regardless of walls in between[/alt]

The run Bisqwit just posted is 17:11. It's usually faster than the 17:06 run, but I think it loses a lot of time fighting in convoys. Pay attention to the Japanese route.. it minimises convoy scenes. In particular, 5 -> 6 -> 14 -> 3 -> 8 is faster than 5 -> 3 -> 6 -> 14 -> 8, despite having more travel idstance, because it avoids convoys.

I was wondering why I fought so many goddamn trucks! Between the trucks and the possibility of exploiting the Area 17 shortcut, we'll see about a new version in a week or so. I have finals coming up. Otherwise, what do you think?

There were only two things I liked the 17:06 better than yours on.. you don't kill cyborgs as quickly or as stylistic as he, and when he's grappling upwards he often misses the platform and grabs it on the wire's way back down (which I think looks cooler, but that's personal style preference).

Well, Genisto made me his bitch. I have been PWNED. Three minutes faster!?! I can't believe it. Imagine how much faster it could have been if you had tried the Area 17 shortcut. Am I still considered a "player?"

Genisto's movie is really cool. His use of the bionic arm in this game was something I was after since the beginning when I added the game to the request list :)

Yes I know this is practically the wrong thread. But since you brought being pwned up! Phil kicked me hard in Circus Charlie ;) My first version was a bit lame, but then I improved it with 4 seconds, just to find out that he has beaten me again! ;) And now I can´t even time the first stage with his time. Good job Phil!
