Rambo TAS by Dave Brown (dave_dfwm)

This game starts with Rambo killing wasps and snakes, and moves up to him killing robots that shoot fireballs. Needless to say, this is exactly like the movie the game is based on.
I use the knife for most of the attacking, since it is the most powerful weapon in the game. The attack sequence for this is quite a few frames, and Rambo cannot run and attack at the same time, so I use a jump attack sequence whenever possible. Also, jumping interrupts the attack sequence and allows you to begin moving more quickly, so I use this technique often.
There are two times in this game where Rambo can shoot a Chinese (I think) symbol when he attacks. One of these attacks can turn Murdock into a frog back at the base.
You can’t do much with this game before you get into the boat, so please don’t judge the movie based on that part alone. Another slow but necessary part of the game occurs when you must play as Co and rescue Rambo.

Possible questions viewers may ask:
Q: What is that thing you did after you talked with the POW for the second time?
A: Tired of being in Vietnam, Rambo decided the quickest way out would be to use his head to burrow through solid rock. This is a well-known glitch in the game, but it is nearly impossible to perform on a console.
Q: Why didn’t you use a wider variety of weapons? It seems they would be faster in certain areas.
A. The other weapons are weaker and would have most likely taken more than one hit to kill an enemy. Also, I discovered that the game creates a delay while switching weapons, unless the switching is done near the edge of a screen. If I use a weapon, I must use it for the whole screen to prevent the switching delay. The switching delay also occurs if you run out of a weapon, which is why I didn’t use the grenades in the last screen with enemies. I got lucky on the last bridge with a well-timed level up. Level 5 is the lowest level a grenade will kill the robots with one hit.
I did find one (necessary) exception to the weapon switching delay. The delay can be avoided if you are switching weapons while falling and attacking. I do this technique before entering the cave.
Q: Wouldn’t the movie have been faster if you had taken damage?
A. I can think of at least two places in the movie where the answer is yes, but I don’t think the movie would have been as entertaining. I wanted to keep Rambo untouchable.
Q: Why did you pause / kill that enemy / when you could have kept moving?
A: Killing enemies and walking / jumping for different amounts of time manipulates enemy movement. If I stopped for a few frames to kill an enemy, it was to manipulate other enemy movement further in the screen or in the next screen. I “waste” an exploding arrow on a wasp near the pickup point to change the movement of the rocks in the next screen to prevent making Rambo wait for them to fall.
Q: Did you really just kill a wasp with a machine gun?
A: Yes.

Voting No, too boring and repetitive. Pretty good performance by you but the game is rather weak.

Sylvester Stallone would be proud of this game....... not! Killing wasps and baboons and that guy taking a dump, and… what's that big face doing there? Decent run, poor game choice — yet again. Voting meh. Though the music was kinda neat.

Why are all of these games listed in the suggested ideas page if everyone seems to think they're bad games? Or am I just getting the wrong people to view and vote? Before he left the site, I'm pretty sure I saw on a forum post that even Phil said he wondered why no one had done this game yet.

Yes, that discussion is here: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1748 Just because a game is listed on a wish list does not guarantee a good response. There is a lot of junk in that list and no indication of how many people actually want to see the game. The best way to avoid this situation is to post a short WIP in the discussion forum and see what kind of response you get. Personally I am suprised that Phil (or anyone) was interested in this game. It is very limited and unimpressive. Little separates this TAS from a potential speedrun of the game. There wasn't much possiblity of route planning, possible glitches, or even any difficult moments to deal with.

Voted meh. Good run of a bad game. An amazing portion of this game is just running without even having to dodge enemies. Snakes falling from trees after rambo has nearly entered the next screen is just pitiful :p

Is the recommended list seriously littered with bad games? Who wrote some of this stuff on there? One thing I noticed in regards to optimization is that around frame 50,000 you break a wall in one swipe, but before you were using 2 swipes. Also, you should make one of those attacking rabid flamingos your avatar. Your best bet is to post a Run Under Construction for whatever game you choose, to see how everyone feels about it. That is, if publication is your goal. If you just like doing these for fun, then you are already accomplishing that goal!

One thing I noticed in regards to optimization is that around frame 50,000 you break a wall in one swipe, but before you were using 2 swipes.
The really tall walls allow you to break many pieces with one hit, whereas the others do not. This is because Rambo is falling a long distance with his knife attacking it.

Angerfist, your opinion on repetitive confuses the hell out of me. There is a TMNT2 movie on this site that is 27 minutes long, and consists of the following: teleport next to foot soldier, do jump attack, repeat hundreds of times. You recommended this movie for a star. This movie is much faster paced and almost 9 minutes faster. It uses a larger variety of attacks and has more types of enemies. How can you consider this movie too repetitive relative to your previous votes? Your opinions don't seem to be very logical, or at least don't seem transitive.

You should not take my voting as a personal issue. I merely stated my opinion. Note that I said your performance was good dave darest. About repetitiveness, I understand your point and will explain how I find Baxters run more entertaining than yours. It is true that "all" Baxter does is do jump attack and heavy abuse of wrapping but I love wrapping, because I relate that ability to a ninja who "vanishes". What can I say, Im a sucker when someone does that and thats why I wanted it to get a star. In my opinion, that repetitiveness is more fun, less boring and amusing. Its matter of opinions as I completely dont understand why Kyrsimys dont want SprintGod's Sonic3&Knuckles run to get a star. Makes my Fist vibrate even more at him! Not teleporting/wrapping would make his run a lot slower. Also note that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is a popular game compared with Rambo. If you still this regard this "conundrum" (thank you xebra) unsolved, then feel free to express it. Thank you for choosing TASvideos.org.

TMNT2 may very well be repetitive but what you see in that TAS is a result of extraordinary planning and creativity. To optimize each screen took a lot work that few could pull off. This impresses me. Optimizing rambo is far less challenging.

I'm not trying to be offensive, but your opinion confuses the me also. Even if you dislike the warping, or think 27 minutes is too long... I'm baffled you find this Rambo movie even close to as entertaining, if not more entertaining, than the TMTN2 movie.

Never took it personal, just wanted a more detailed explanation of your thoughts on the movies. What about the game did you find repetitive? I tried to put as much surprise/variety in it as I could, but was very limited, especially at the beginning. I guess we just have differing opinions -- I ended up watching parts of the TMNT2 run at 400% speed and still found it to be a bit meh. Adelikat:

I agree. One of the reasons I attempted a TAS at this game was because I really enjoyed playing it back in the day on the console.

I think it just boils down to opinion again. I only really enjoyed playing TMNT2 on the console during two-player mode with my brother, and even then it got boring due to the lack of possible attacks in the game. (Even the original TMNT had more attacks if you include weapon pickups). //isn't trying to be offensive either -- it's tough to state opinions in text without any expression or inflection :-S
