I had a reason for this. It had something to do with non members being able to encode the movies themselves, upload to youtube and claim as their own.

Sorry, I will not do this. One of the reasons is proof of movie authenticity. Yes, one could register and then download the movie… but it just doesn't feel right.

If they're willing to go through the trouble of re-encoding a movie to be able to upload it without the TASVideos notices, they'd likely be willing to download the movie files as well. How many times has this happened before, anyway?

I agree, you should do this. That way, if you knew someone was re-encoding them to remove the tags, you could ban them.

Oooh, they will surely be upset about it! :D

Er, why? You could just register and then download, it won't do anything to stop the people who do this and will likely only annoy the legitimate users who just want to watch emulated movies. That, adn it don't give any additional protection, as you won't be able to tell who's doing it anyway.

Please no. There's no good reason why. And it turns away potential fans.

I agree with OmnipotentEntity.

You could handle this by creating a timestamping service. You send your movie, or a cryptographic hash of it, to a trusted server. It gives you back a public-key signature of the hash, along with your name and the time it was made. This system would prove that the movie existed at the specified date and time and was claimed by a particular user at the time of signing. As long as everyone trusts that server, nobody can fake it. (If you don't trust one server, but trust a consortium, there are ways to share a secret.) The system could detect someone trying to re-sign an existing movie as their own (two identical hashes), but this isn't truly effective because some meaningless change could be made to the file. Instead of relying on this, you would resolve disputes through the timestamp. If you do something like this, you must avoid MD5 and probably SHA-1 as well for long-term security. Because the files to be signed are controlled by a hostile force, collision attacks are a threat. I'd suggest SHA-256, or SHA-1 and MD5 together (very difficult to collide both simultaneously). I don't think this is enough of a problem that we need to take such drastic steps. And I agree that it would be too much of a hassle for potential fans.

This stuff's going to happen anyway regardless, and the steps necessary to partially prevent it are too desperate, and will only make the thieves try harder to hack our stuff.

I agree, stupid idea. And besides, if someone does do that, you can report videos. Just include a link to the submission page on this site and prove that the movies are identical.

i also don't like the idea. it's already much of a hassle to put the things together required for viewing the movie. i don't think one more hindrance will make any benefit.

There has got to be a better way to do that. It seems like too much of a hassle for people who may only have a passing interest in TASing. People who come to the website may not want to become a part of it immediately. It's better if we let them get a feel of the website before they join. That way, the environment will feel less threatening to more timid people.

two points that bring this already-silly idea down: 1) people sharing accounts just for this (which would be hard to detect if both used the same proxy when connecting to the site, an obvious idea) or giving each other recordings 2) http://www.bugmenot.com/

People won't become members unless they sample the movies and decide whether it is good or not.

ah damn it, nothing like a new forum with the date markers in places you don't realize until after the fact, eh?
