no, who said it has to be a low bitrate? Just enough bitrate so its high quality.Who said dvd quality was low quality? I don't think Nes Mario Bros needs 2220 kbps.
If you want a different bitrate or higher quality, you need to re-encode the movies, not download the existing AVIs.

Bitrate can't be upped from a low quality file and increase the quality in no such form. All it would do was inflate each frame's size for no reason at all. You can't play god here...

I reencoded some nes movies before off of the avis and burned it on a vcd, and me and my friend watched it and it was good quality, we mainly payed attention on how fast he got mario through the level.
it was high enough quality and it was good enough.

We are talking about speed runs and most of the games are beatin quickly, and that can't be right.
One DVD-R holds 120 minutes of video. This number cannot be changed while still being readable in a DVD player. At this rate, and at 4.7GB a disc, it's not unthinkable that there are 60 hours worth of gameplay on this site, as some games are quite long.
It might have been an exaggeration but it's closer to the truth than 4gb.

Not my dvd-r's it says it can be increased to 360 minutes depending on bitrate or how you encode it.
With horribly crappy quality. NES movies may not be hit too hard because there's not much there graphics-wise, but some genesis and snes games will look horrible on a tv screen if you don't reencode some of the current avis.
I think the most telling argument I can make that the current avis aren't good enough in quality for a dvd-r is already on this site.

I'm not speaking for everyone, but whatever, this is what I think:
As an encoder myself I am going to agree with the naysayers. There is no way you can get "all" the runs on this site in watchable quality onto an acceptable amount of single-layer DVDs in Mpeg1 or 2. If you want to get all the avis on the site and make alphabetical packs or something that doesn't involve reencoding low-bitrate files, then more people might be interested. Otherwise, you would do better to make the files by encoding from the emulator and input files (since the end result will be the same size, you might as well use a clean source (And don't give me bullshit about that being more work. If I want to encode an episode of Lost to 1280x720p h264/xvid, should I have the HD-DVR record it on the lowest possible setting with ugly macroblocking, or highest setting yielding a ridiculously huge file to work with but with an incomparably better final mpeg4 file? It's the same concept...backwards since you want to use an inferior technology than the one already used)). And the way mpeg2 works, you'd need a lot (a lot (A LOT)) of passes for some of the faster movies to look decent. If you can get just all the sonic videos (GBA,Genesis, etc) and gunstar heroes onto 1 DVD so you can watch it on a crappy dvd player without huge pixellation, I'd like to see the ISO.
As it is there might only be interest in high profile games like mario 64.

Seriously, I can't decide whether you're more annoying or amusing. :) But your constant expectation that people will do all the work for you and your getting upset when they don't grovel at your feet and thank you for being allowed to serve you is probably more funny in the end.
If you want DVDs, roll up your sleeves and produce them yourself. Or ask people nicely, and don't get all pissy when they have better things to do than to fulfill your every wish; you may find that that actually works better, too. If I had had any intentions to maybe encode DVDs myself (which I didn't, mostly since I don't know how to do that), I certainly wouldn't be inclined to do it anymore now.
And if something's too much work for you, why isn't it too much work for others, too?

I expected more worthwhile discussion about the encoding settings for such a DVD, seen as how this topic has four pages.
I do think that it would be kind of cool to seed/Archive.org a DVD with a selection of great runs. Maybe I need to try and experiment with it to see how it goes.

Just burn the AVIs you want with a copy of mplayer or something on a DVD. That's what I do. Works on any decent PC.

It's an example, for our 2+ hour videos I'd doubt you even get 5. However whatever it is, you'd get more if you used MPEG4 technology.

You really have no idea then. It'd take a few hours to create the DVD ISO, while it'd take over a month to download the ISO from me.

I can't leave it on for a month straight, and even if I could it's still annoying to wait a month just to see a few videos which you could download individually at smaller sizes much faster.

It would be kind of cool to have such a DVD, though. Just one DVD that shows some of our best work which people can download if they like to. And a corresponding normal AVI should be present as well, of course.
I'm going to look into it at some point, but don't expect any results anytime soon...
