In level 9 in the room with lots of keeses, I think you could have gone up, left, and right, instead of left, up, and right.
Edit: Why is the video length 29:17? Based on the number of frames, it should be 29:15.9, which would round to 29:16.
In level 3, do you have to kill the boss to beat the level, or did you just kill it for the bombs?
Need full bombs for 7. Its faster to get the bombs from the red goriya room, but I couldn't get bomb drops from them going straight there. Could have also tried killing just 1 dodongo then going there. Its better than trying to find bombs outside. Even with famtasia, I can't get any enemy I want to drop whatever item I want, whenever I want.

Might be faster. Walking half-room length vs pushing the block an extra time.

Actually it's a whole-room length, half to the left in one room and half to the right in the next room.
I'm going to try to pull a Phil on this run. Except for correcting a few minor errors, I plan on making only tactical changes. I don't have any experience time attacking this type of game, so it's anyone's guess if I will be able to improve upon the second quest as much as Phil did on the first. That being said, the benefits of frame advance have already made themselves evident, as I was able to enter the ZELDA code roughly a billion times faster than Sleepz did on Crummytasia.
I realize my reputation precedes me ... so wish me luck! I'll try to keep you guys updated as I hit important milestones.
Also, for some reason Famtasia now completely freezes my system. It didn't used to do that ... but it does now. When any of you have a minute, could you fast forward through Sleepz's run and just tell me on which frame he grabs each piece of the triforce?
Famtasia doesn't have a frame counter (unless you go to some lengths to hack savestates), so you'll get measurements which are about as accurate from the AVI.
Edited: Also, good luck! :)
Well, I've run into a major snag already. First of all, FCEU somehow jacked up my FCM, so to try to fix it I just started a new movie and loaded up a savestate I'd archived. But now it says it starts from an embedded savestate instead of from power-on ... even though it starts from power-on. Anyways, I have no idea what to do about that.
Just as big a problem is I can't get the wallhands to drop me 10 rupees. I thought perhaps I could get 5 from the wallhands and 5 from the the boss, but all the aquamentus ever drops are hearts and fairies.
So far I've gained some time on the Famtasia run due to the following:
Entered the ZELDA code ~twice as fast, and a frame here or there when using the continue shortcut.
Two damage boosts.
Killed the bat room in L1 faster.
Sacrificed a tiny amount of time to get some bombs from the goriyas, so I will be able to bomb the aquamentus.
I don't recommend comparing with the AVI because that's what I did when doing Double Dragon and noticed many frames of difference between the AVI and the FMV.

I did that with my wrath of the black manta run and I saw NO difference in frames (after subtracting the intro screen on the avi).
However I tried with DT2 and it seems the avi was recorded at 60fp2 and the frame counts were nowhere near accurate.
I am still having no luck getting 10 rupees out of the wallhands. My position in the room, the monster's position in the room, the number of hearts/bombs/rupees, the frame I enter the room on, etc., all seem to have absolutely no effect on the items I drop. I can affect whether or not an item drops, but not which ones. For example, the wallhands 1-5 in my WIP always seem to drop a fiver, a heart, a clock, and two singles, respectively.
This is the only point in the game where I need such a specific drop from so few monsters ... the rest of the game is just bomb management, which I think I can handle. But I'm going to need some help either getting another fiver from the wallhands, or in getting one from the aquamentus. I honestly can't go on because I need to gamble right after this.
Around frame 3030, why do you swing the sword? I tried just walking to pick up that bomb and it was 7 frames faster. That also makes me wonder about the other times you get items with the sword.
EDIT: I found what you need to do to get 10 rupees from those wallhands. You have to kill exactly 1 more red octorok than you did before entering the dungeon.
Doubtless because I didn't test that sequence sufficiently. I'll change it.
I'm reasonably certain using the sword to pick up the bomb/heart combo is best before L1 since they are both off the path (and I need full hearts), but I'll test it just to make sure.
Many thanks. Any red octorok in particular, or did it not seem to matter? I will probably have to just stop and shoot one somewhere, though I will still make up that lost time thanks to having bombs for the aquamentus, assuming killing an extra octorok doesn't screw up the goriya spawn and drop, or completely ruin the bat room, or put all the bats in my way in the warp room.
Apparently the only thing that affects the item randomness is the number (and type?) of possibly-item-dropping enemies you've killed, so any red octorok or similar creature should do.
(Although, the game seems to also keep track of the number of enemies you've killed in a row without getting hit, and I'm not sure what it uses that counter for.)
Hmm, it didn't work: WIP. I killed an extra octorok and even managed to shave frames while doing it, and came up with an even better strategy for the goriya room, and the bat room worked out pretty great, too (I didn't even need the shooting sword) ... but the wallhands didn't cooperate.
Since the bats worked out so well I decided to see what I could do without collecting a heart from the octoroks: WIP. Unfortunately, I couldn't ever get the bat room to work out so nicely again. It seems unlikely I'll find another spawn that doesn't require the shooting sword, which is too bad because this WIP was really fast up to the point I got.
Huh, well I did it a few times playing in real-time from your partway through your v1 movie, but I guess there's more to the randomess than the number you kill. One thing I just noticed is that if you kill 2 enemies simultaneously, they can drop different items than if you kill them one at a time.
When I got the right randomness, killing the first wallhand would give a faerie, but killing it and the second one at the same time with a bomb gave 5 rupees. (They dropped only rupees, in the order 5,1,1,1,5.)
EDIT: Tried again, and one time the first 2 both dropped 5 rupees each. Some memory values to watch (that might affect which item is dropped) are 0050, 034F, 052A, and 0627. I don't know what else affects it, but I got good results with those values at 10,0,7,17 respectively, and with 10,0,5,15, when entering the room with wallhands.
EDIT2: For Sleepz, those values were: 10,0,2,12 upon entering the room.
I've noticed a few anomalies while watching Sleepz's video. Firstly, it appears he can walk farther into caves before text starts than Phil or I can. Does anyone know what's up with that? Also, the AVI runs quite a bit (6-8%?) faster than FCEU does. If you synchronize my WIP and the AVI at the moment we hit start after having already entered the ZELDA code, the AVI pulls substantially ahead of the WIP before the paths differ. Is that because of Famtasia or because of poor encoding? I'd love to be able to accurately guage how many frames I am gaining, but Famtasia runs at 1 fps or worse on my system, while sucking up all my system resources. (It takes me two or three minutes just to kill the process with the task manager.) Famtasia used to run fine on my system, but now it's unusable. Does anyone have any idea why this would be the case?
- What do you have set under the Speed options?
- Maybe your screen depth needs to be set to 16 bit
- You could try out some new Famtasias from the vending machine, with different patches, since those can affect the speed and process priority
Stuck how? Have you gotten to the room with any of the values I posted, and it didn't work, or is it not turning out to be practical to get those values? (Besides just copying what Sleepz did, which would work but defeats the purpose of being faster.)
I'm proposing this, not running it, because I'm currently working on other projects at the moment. I would like to see a TAS of the second quest of Legend of Zelda 1 by entering "ZELDA" as the username.
Hope someone will do this!
My current project: Something mysterious (oooooh!)
My username is all lower-case letters. Please get it right :(
You DO know there is a run of this already don't you? Are you suggesting an improvement? If you are, I'm with you on that. Someone who has enough motivation to do this properly should definitely have a go at it. I'm sure there is lots to improve in Sleepz's old Famtasia run.
