This movie is the TAS of Metroid Legacy, which is one of the most famous hacks of Super Metroid. It was completed in June 2005, and had already been published at a certain Japanese website. Having a chance, I'm just submitting it into the worldwide community for the first time.

Metroid Legacy Introduction

"Metroid Legacy" is well-balanced, full-changed hack of Super Metroid.
Features of this hack are following.
  • Almost all of the landforms, placement of enemies, room connections, item order are changed.
  • It contains whole new world that is not associated with original world.
  • Upgraded game difficulty throughout all scenes, especially boss fights.
  • No change of game systems like movement of Samus and enemies, graphic-chips, 100 items.
  • No need of gilche knowledge to complete game.
The whole new world, which is entirely differ from original world, spreads out in this game. You can enjoy new exploration, searching routes, looking for required items, fighting enemies. Operation of Samus is same to original one, so you can play it smoothly. You will re-experience the first impression of Super Metroid.

Movie introduction

This smv movie was created with Snes9x-143-WIP1-win32 (WIP!!) and it
  • takes damage to save time
  • gets all items, 100%
  • aims for the fastest time
  • shows all secret routes in this game
  • runs through almost reverse order, unbelievable and stupid routes
  • contains several new tricks which may apply to original game.
Although speed run technique used in this movie may be old-fashioned, whole routing in 100% run of Legacy must be still fresh and full of originality. I believe you will have an enjoyable time for watching it, and for the sake of your best fun, I strongly recommend you to play Metroid Legacy with your own hand before watching my movie. Thank you!

New Tricks contained

  • Torizo quickest kill
    • It save time for 1-2 second(s) to beat Torizo by skipping one of his attack phases.
  • Sprore Spawn quickest kill
    • It kills him in second turn by using muscle way.
  • hopping ball / spring dash (I dont know how to name it...)
    • Samus keeps her speed through narrow pipe or other complex situation by using spring ball.

If you read the instructions on the first page it woulden't be that hard. Even though the hackrom page is crapped. Seems optimized for a monitor that has a resolution of 2048x1536. :D Anyways. Here's the direct link. http://sukamax.hp.infoseek.co.jp/file/Metroid_Legacy.zip

Because this movie is not worth being published. :P I know the reasons and accept this dicision. I will challenge this TAS again, maybe in this summer. The only thing Im worrying about is whether TASVIDEOS.ORG accept the TAS of Metroid Legacy again or not. Now there is an another awesome Super Metroid hack: Super Metroid Redesign. If TASVIDEOS.ORG accept 1 hack at 1 game and choose SMR for SM hack, there is no reason to remake my Legacy movie. I want to ask this problem to Bisqwit. :)

For what it's worth, in my opinion this hack is excellent and should be added to the list of accepted hacks. I'm looking forward to your new run, catnap!

I was about to write something like this in the previous post, but I didn't: I don't feel qualified to judge this movie because I'm not familiar with this SM hack (and the last time moozooh convinced me to try one, all I got was irritated from getting lost and dying all the time). So I hope someone else can take this one.

I am also unqualified to judge this hack: 1) I haven't even played SNES metroid games 2) I am biased against hacks being published on the site (except for bugfixes & possibly translations).

Just to make sure you're not confusing anything: I wanted you to try "Metroid Redesign" hack, which probably was the one mentioned by Kyrsimys in his last post. As I've beaten both Legacy and Redesign, I must say that since catnap222 is already TASing Legacy, there's no reason for excluding it from the list of accepted hacks now. On the other hand, Metroid Redesign is better than Legacy in almost every aspect (well, except movie length, hehe), so it should be considered for adding, too, as all the physics engine enhancements it introduced, the level design and a lot of possible sequence breaks allow for a great TAS which certainly will get tackled by somebody as long as it is allowed for publication here. Redesign is a hack of SDW level of quality — furthermore, it's more like a new game, so it should have its fair share of attention here, in TAS community.

My job as a judge is to follow the rules as closely as possible. If you want an exception to the rules it will require a green light from Bisqwit.

Hmm, that actually gave me an idea. If some hacks eventually get allowed here as an exception, there must be a reason for it, right? I think Bisqwit should add a couple of lines to the rules that would justify the allowed hacks and also give us some space for deciding which of them comply to the defined criteria.

I am thinking of doing a any% TAS of Super Metroid Redesign next year, however this will require very much work so it would be great to know for sure whether SM Redesign will be accepted on TASvideos as another Metroid Hack or not. It's just too bad the rules allow only one hack per game, but since SM Redesign has completely changed physics that are very different to the original game and even some more movements the original don't has at all (like the Shinespark re-charge or the new screw attack boost that would allow a awesome looking TAS) this could be considred as a seperate hack. As moozooh said, and I can only agree with him, SM Redesign has definitely the level of the SDW - TLC Hack in quality so I would like to ask whether we can make a tiny exception and just in this case allow both hacks. I think this would be the best choice. I already did a nice and pretty high quality TAS-demo of Redesign till the Wall jump boots in Brinstar, so if someone is interested or if it would help in the judging of the hack I could post the SMV in the Redesign tread. However Legacy definitely shouldn't be replaced by Redesign as it's also a very nice hack that already has a complete TAS done which catnap even plans to improve.
