OK the test run is complete here is the final version, I'll updatet the front page Tommorow COMPLETED TESTRUN http://rapidshare.de/files/23081222/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html note: I wasn't going for true perfection Now proper disscussion can begin on tactics. The last special is definitley my favourite as its about the only one where the bouncer could actually be used. If anyone want to try anything for themselves e.g. special stage or ring time attack then you can use the link provided.

nfq. you are certainly helping with this. lol. AKA, now that we're talking about tactics, I reckon that you could complete GH1 in 24. Please don't wait at the end in the actual thing. i wouldn't worry about waiting for the time to count down. Jump around a bit, run left to right, nearly not jump into the big ring that leads you to the special stage (that'd be drama). GH2 I think 18 is as far as it goes. As for the bosses, don't stop until you EQUAL or (unlikely) BEAT JXQs run time. And for the last 3 zones. If it doesn't look like you can get 24 in GH1 then 25s good. That's my advice for GH time wise.

OK I've done the first stage with 50 rings in a frame perfect 30 secs and I also skidded at the last frame before the sign. I messed round the end screen coming close the the ring, but I didn't collect any tags because I suspect they cause a lag. I'm doing the first special and I'm noting down inputs and I'm wondering if that bash before the last corner was a mistake. How do you hex edit? and don't post that link into Bisquits FAQ.

Really, the FAQ is the best source of hex-editing info. But in this case, it's probably faster for you to just redo that special stage.

Do you mean the dummy run special stage that I did, no I'm copying what nfq did when he re-editted Philipptr special stage but I'm no sure if that bash at the last corner was meant, unless it was absolutley neccesscary for removing the block.

If you try it yourself (by studying his run of the stage rather than direct copying), you may be able to save even more time by trying out different things, like the one you suggested. And hex-editing from anywhere besides between levels in this game is probably a losing proposition.

Does gens have frame advance or is is just play the game at 3% speed. Although I may have found an improvement (not a certainty) it may lose time because the new strat collects a few extra rings which means losing frames during the end screen.

Yes, Gens has frame advance. Although at this point, I am confused about exactly what you want to hex-edit where, I'm still positive that it would be faster to just make a back-up, try your new idea, and compare which is faster by using the frame counter.

Is this going to be a full game run, or what? I watched it, and it stopped right after the sixth emerald. I think it'll be interesting to see someone go through the rest of the game as Super Sonic, if it's possible in THIS game.

There are only 6 emeralds in Sonic 1, and no super sonic Edit: Which I guess has already been said

It's not possible to get Super Sonic in this game. It would be nice to see a full, finished run, though. The WIP/Test looked good, and I'm looking forward to the rest. :)

Urgh I don't get, I did the first stage is eight frames quicker overall, but my special stage is 15 frames slower than nfq's special and I'm copying what he's doing, it looks exactly the same in real time so it'll take slow down to figure out how I could lose so much time. Here's it is anyway. http://rapidshare.de/files/23779656/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_ALL_EMERALDS.gmv.html

Hex edit NFQ's special stage onto your movie. Then you have an exact dupe.

Or if you can't hex edit, use the input display and copy it frame-by-frame :P.

What application are you meant to hex edit with anyway. I thought that I'd be able to do it notepad but its just a load of y's with two dots above them streched accross the page.

Well, Cream. Unlike you, I don't have the time to read through EVERY single POST, of EVERY single GAME, of EVERY single CONSOLE on the forum. So I ask questions. I have a lot of them, and if I want to, I will type them in. Sucks though that Super Sonic is not in this game. :3

It is considered bad manners to post in a thread that you haven't read at least the most recent 5 pages of, at least. (if the thread is under 5 pages, you should read the whole thread before you post.) And even if you've read the most recent 5 pages, you should mention that you didn't read the entire thread, because it was long. The reason for this is because often when people don't read through the thread, they post with questions that have already been answered once or twice over, and they wouldn't even have needed to post. (Thus they have effectively wasted their own time, and the time of anyone else who's reading the thread.)
How fleeting are all human passions compared with the massive continuity of ducks.

Definitely looking better than your test version. I have one nitpick in Act 1, on the loop-the-loop, but you may have considered this already and decided against it. It's possible to get all five rings and still do a couple jumps in there to greatly increase your speed. However, since the fastest time is over 24.3333 seconds, the overall time is faster if you wait and cross at 30 seconds. So if you did this speed trick, you'd just be waiting longer. This scenario is why I just decided to go for in-game timer instead, because I can't think of a good answer. Either way has a part to me that stands out as not-so-good, but as you are the author, it is your decision.
