"You've got a friend in me..." We all remember the movie Toy Story that created the characters Woody and Buzz Lightbeer-- err Lightyear. This game is based upon the movie and follows it very well. You play as Woody and follow the movie's storyline. Starting from spying on Andy's birthday party to escaping from Sid's house, you do just about everything the characters do in the movie. I completed the first 2 levels and you can get the WIP here. In level 2 I have to return all the toys to their hiding places so there is a little bit of backtracking. Also, there is a glitch where you can get total invincibility throughout the entire game that can be activated in this level. You have to return all the toys to their hideouts, get 7 stars (life/hearts), then jump in the toy box and hold down for 7 seconds. I didn't use this glitch this time because I don't think I'll need it and I'm not sure if I can make up the time I'll lose activating the glitch. What do you think? Should I continue this? Any and all feedback and comments are welcome and requested.

I used to own this game a while back and I personally think it would make an entertaining run. There is quite a bit of variety in the levels. On the last level (with the rocket) it would be cool to see some near death scenarios. This game can probably be be beaten within 10 minutes with a TAS I really can't find any noticable flaws in your run and level 2 was particularly great, as I've never been able to finish it that fast. You didn't even have to wait for the toys! (save for the last one). Also there is a programmed cheat for invincibility on the same level as the glitch you mention. It involves collecting seven stars, jumping into the toybox, and pressing down for about five seconds or until you see the top-left star start spinning.

Yeah that's the one I was talking about. I'm gonna have to fiddle with it and see how fast I could get it to work because it would be much faster to use the glitch than not to use it. There is so much that could be skipped if you were invincible. I'm glad you liked the run so far.

This would be one run i'd like to see, i loved this game as a kid. Good Luck with it and if I think of any tips, i'll tell you. This was also released on the SNES, I don't know any differences apart from I think it had passwords every level instead of every section of the game. (i think)

I would recommend the Genesis version over the SNES in terms of a normal playthrough. You get more of the graphics during the intermissions, and during the first of Sid's house levels, you actually got different music during the match lighting parts. However, a run of both versions might be worth it since the level where you return the alien toys is completely different between the two systems.

The one i hated was the boss if Pizza Planet, whether I was just a horrible gamer back then or not, i still found it hard. I think I only defeated it once, lol

Darn....a toy story run. Thought i'd pull a fast one and get mines done before anyone else had the thought. Personally, i didn't use the invincibility cheat. When it is done the star spins meaning the game knows what's going on i.e. a cheat in my view. However, you DO need to take damage to get the fasest time.

I loved this game when I was young, was really fun to play, and would love to see a speedrun, would bring back lots of memories :)

I posted a 3.9s improvement on the first race (same link as in the submission thread). I'm sure it's improvable, but hopefully it will demonstrate a more optimal technique.

Yeah that is quite clearly better. But even you saw that the traction on that track is really bad (its somewhat like the hover boots from OoT) and saw i was easily fooled into thinking that that was the best that could be done. I'm definitely going to have another crack at that game at some point, not for a week or so, because the last week of getting that TAS finished up was quite intensive. If i see woody one more time......

On the whole I'd say the run is good, but there are some things with it. As IdeaMagnate pointed out, the race. I wasn't too sure about the first person part either. Also, the fight with Buzz and the tyre (sometimes it seemed that he wasn't hit the earliest possible). That's all i have to say for now.

I think the first person race was the weakest part. At the moment im redoing and have just bettered the 1st level, and am trying to improve on the second as i've been told that it's not optimal.

Just a thought... Personally i think activating the invincibility glitch would make the game less entertaining, however, it would be much faster. Out of curiosity, should i record a run using it, would that interest anyone?

Just wanted to give you some tips (before my real time speedrun is up, which will take a while), as I noticed in a thread over at sda you said you were working at this. First, in the 2nd level, go and hit rocky gibraltar's blocks first (he moves the slowest). You can hit the pig and rex's boxes as well, 102 is the best you can do and is easily doable in real time. Next, in level 3, try taking more damage and try to avoid swinging (I'm pretty sure its slower) and climbing along the ropes with the sharks (just take damage by jumping down). You should optimally end this level with one star of health after taking damage in every place you would have to slow down. In tire buzz out, you should be manipulating his movements so that he lands as quickly as possible. It might be faster to try and manipulate the fries to fall in the best manner in the pizza planet level. Also, manipulating which type of walker you get (some are slower, faster, longer steps) is best. In the first person part, try walking backwards more often. you can't pick them up backwards, but you can return to the claw machine backwards. During the claw boss, you should wait to hit him for the second hit so that he doesn't have to travel as far. Avoid the mini game. It needlessly wastes time. In the level that has hooks that you have to swing up multiple times, it is possible to skip rungs. I can do it inconsistly on console. Good luck, i don't think this run should be too difficult to make optimal using tas methods.

It's probably like the Mega Man 3 Debug "glitch". IE: A cheat code that has been mistaken for a programming error. And cheats aren't allowed.

Yes, i work on this when MM is going slowly. I've restarted this run several times and have discovered lots of tricks etc. to make it amazing. On just the first two levels I've saved over a minute on the run I submitted back in September. I decided not to use the invincibility glitch because it isn't even a glitch but a cheat (in my opinion anyway). http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/3375/toystory-tas-mukki.gmv Here's what I've done so far, but there are still a couple of things I'd like to go back and change. I'm actually really looking forward to your run Stanski. I reckon if I really do the business here I can get sub-20 minutes...maybe...if I find a few more things.

I hope my run lives up to your expectations, I really wish i could have figure out a way to make it death free but one intended suicide at the very beginning of mutant toys isn't bad. Doing otherwise made the run too slow. At 2:18, isn't it much much more worthwhile to grab an extra health star earlier and then just jump down and take damage? I'm pretty positive that it is. Are you avoiding all the health stars for a reason? You can easily get one in the first level, if its worth it you can also luck-manipulate that baloon to give you a health star (it should be worth it if you can use it for damage in the 3rd level). My run for sda was around 22:20 from the beginning of gameplay till the end (i.e. i didn't count the beginning sequence or ending after you lose control for the minivan). You should easily be able to make this sub 20:00. What percentage are you playing at, or are you using frame advance?

The main reason i'm restarting, again, is like you said. I haven't properly looked into what health stars I will need for the future. I realised shortly after doing this that I could have made extra use of a star at the end of level three and also when I come to inside the claw machine I can take some damage there. I'm going to watch back through my old movie whenever I get the chance and properly figure out how much I need.

Quick tip: All the stars you will need are located in the free rex level (2 stars are released every time you hit a checkpoint flag). Just exit the chase buzz level with 1 health star, as you can get through the next 2 levels with 1 star easily (the dark-buzz boss and the car racing level). The pizza planet level is the place where you're really going to have problems figuring out where to take damage and how much to take. I'm thinking you should take 2 damage in this level (obviously you have to figure out the best spots to take them). If you get 49 stars at the end of the level, you get a new health star, which I don't think it wastes any time gathering them and you finish the level with 4 health star. You can then take down to 1 damage again in the next level, since there are a few places that require you to slow down tremendously (the end of the level specifically). I'd test how much damage you need to take in this level, but I think 3 is about right. Then, you can get 2 extra health stars in the first person level by going fast enough, and gain 1 health star by getting 49 stars again against the claw boss (should be doable for a tas). This will give you 4 health stars for the rest of the game. I'm not sure that there are any points that you should take damage at in "mutant toys," so you should take 3 points of damage in "sid's workbench." One small timesaver, I think that if you whip before falling a long distance, you can avoid the lag frames. You will be forced to do one bonus stage, but you might have to skip some stars in order to avoid entering the bonus stages twice (i did this in my speedrun, unfortunately, but skipping them takes less about 2 or 3 seconds).

You're right, its a cheat. Its listed as such in the (likely) rare Official Player's Guide that came out shortly after the game's release
