Hm, finally got around to watching that WIP. I'd say you should definitely go for shortest in-level time, not shortest overall. It's about entertainment first and foremost and the choices you made in the first act to waste time really don't look good.
I beg to differ, if he hadn't wasted the 1 second or so, it would have been less "entertaining" because there would be a boring wait for the end level results to count down.

Yes but he ran into walls, slowed down, etc. The first act just looks very sloppy and even though it doesn't impact the time it'd look better if he tried to get through it as fast as possible. If he wants to waste time he could alter his route slightly so he arrives exactly at 30.00. Entertainment is a lot about stuff happening and happening in a way that looks superhuman. Bumping into walls or waiting is a lot less entertaining than slower paths or even the score screen.

I did say I'll be restarting after Spring Yard 2 once I aquire all the emeralds. I was eight frames past 30 secs anyway. Spring Yard one will be much simplier if its completed within 30 secs. A long wait is all part of the entertainment, I could quite easily of completed the first act in 25 secs with 50 rings, but I get board of watching long bonuses at the end of stages. I now realise why this game is so cursed to all runners, and thats because timing and jumping is not very forgiving.

Well, the guidelines say that if you have to wait for something, don't make it obvious that you're waiting. But I think you could also try to make it extra obvious that there's a forced wait by doing something interesting during that time. I guess it's just a question of preferred style.

Sorry for the long wait there was other stuff going on and I had to retrace my steps many times and the overall result isn't perfect, but I could have made them if I was in the right mood, but the speacial stage at the end can be practiced on. The speacial stage is simple but there is a vast number of routes and tactics which can be used in order to obtain the emerald http://rapidshare.de/files/22490958/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html This is just a test run, I'll remove the mistakes during the next run.

OK I done the special stage, but there is bound to be a much faster strat than this. The difficulty isn't reaching the blocks its staying focused on them. The engine is unfavourable when it comes to this stage as only ever one block at a time can be removed, plus there is something which causes sonic to remove the nearest block starting from an clockwise position http://rapidshare.de/files/22526910/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html Someone should try doing the stage for themselves to show a better more effient strat.

I tried to do the first one and got the emerald 264 frames (hope I counted them right :D) earlier, still its unoptimized. http://rapidshare.de/files/22636923/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_all_emeralds_edited.zip.html (used your first level in the movie)

I think nfq did it faster than that. Still not bad, the first two have been done in a near optimal fashion (nfq's not mine). It would be better if you tried the third special stage.

:D didnt read the whole thread so I didnt knew about nfq's try ;) gave it a try and made it some frames faster than you, but its still looking far from optimal (then again this stage is very hard to TAS), maybe I will give it another try tomorrow... http://rapidshare.de/files/22657466/3rd_emerald_okay_1_.zip.html (I hope I uploaded the right file O_o)

Yeah pretty sweet can't see too much wrong with it. How much faster was it compared to mine anyway? I'll have to slow it down to work out the mistakes if there any I'll try and get to the end of the second marble so the 4th stage can be tried out.

I think it was 463 frames faster. btw: how do you plan on going on with this movie: play it through and then hex all the special stages in, or doing it again?

I wish I knew how to do hex. Once the final special is done, I'll restart from the beggining, I just want to know where the common problem obstacles are. I'm still going for the fastest in game time though. Marble 1 wasn't paticulartly great although the badly timed arrival at certain obstacles is what made it look bad. I'm about 70% of the way through marble 2, and I'm at the bit where the lava drops after the bit where the blocks need to be smashed. I think I may have spotted a 1-2 frame improvement in Green Hill 3, but I couldn't be certain in its faster than JXQ's method. I have some ideas on what might improve nfq's second green hill zone and what get <17 overall, but I think it would not be possible to collect 50 rings. My idea was that you copy nfq's run up until jumping on top of the loop and land on the extra life and bounce accross several enemies and possibly over the bit where the snake tunnel is entered. The reason I say this is I've come close to doing a thing very simalar to that on a console.

philipptr, your first emerald... the beginning to the emerald room was about 10 frames faster than mine, but you lose 90 frames because you jump. i fixed it for you, now it's 14 frames faster than mine: http://rapidshare.de/files/22698566/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_all_emeralds_edit2.gmv.html on the 3rd special stage, the mistake is that you bump on that ball.

We fall behind JXQ a bit because we can't do the spike trick, that makes 46 pretty hard.

Already tried it.

Ok I did the second marble stage. The stage isn't hard when your going for pure speed, but there is no smooth route through the stage that collects 50 rings, because of that I made a huge diversion, which costed significant time. I also left a few strats out so the process of doing the level would be quicker. Here's the run to the beggining of the fourth special, this special is actually quite an interstesting stage compared to the others so far, its kind of like a maze, but importance must also be put on avoiding the coninue at the end screen. Here it is http://rapidshare.de/files/22818707/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html

Is it possible to host on a site other than rapidshare? It never lets me download because of it's stupid ip detection detecting the proxy and not my ip.

Rapidshare isn't stupid. If you use a proxy there is no way in hell that any site is going to know what your true IP is.

Thanks bobxp: Proxy wasn't exactly the right word, I meant it always picks up the ip address of my internet service provider instead of mine. Most sites can see my ip address but rapidshare can't. For when it does detect your ip properly i'm sure it's a great service. Anyway, this is going off topic so I won't say any more.

Yeah, I started having that same problem when I moved here. I did manage to make a download work by waiting for sixty-some minutes and hitting the Free button on nearly the exact second it allowed me to... (I think the minute it's counting down starts over when you hit the button, but I'm not completely sure.)

OK I had a go at the fourth special stage it isn't as frustrating compared to the others but it is extremely hard and took the most re-records by far, but I get the feeling that this'll get beaten by over 10 secs. I couldn't remove the blocks in one go no matter what I did, I tried experimenting with different approaches but the stage rotates too fast, so I had to let it go the full 360 so I could complete it. So here it is, if anyone is having a go at it you must at all costs avoid collecting 50 rings thus getting a continue. http://rapidshare.de/files/22887728/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html

yes I know, well I tried to avoid it but didn't make it to get faster than this run. So I gave the 4. stage a try, but it seems this one is much harder..

I tried experimenting with a few different strats for marble 3 but it turns out it was a lot slower, the only bit I borrowed of JXQ's run was the 3 hit on rototnik. I'm now at the beggining of Spring Yard 3, which shouldn't be too hard as I'll go for the 30 secs, I seriously doubt it can be completed in <24 secs + 50 rings. http://rapidshare.de/files/22987002/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html Just two stages left before I start again, although marble 2 needs a proper look into for the ring route + the last three special stages. Edit: OK I done Spring Yard 1 which didn't pose too many problems, I got a frame perfect 30 seconds this time unlike Green Hill 1, I'm not sure if its possible to get <24 secs. http://rapidshare.de/files/22998813/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html I haven't had a proper look at the 5th special yet but it does look complicated. EDIT_2: OK I did the 5th special and I personally thought the previous one was harder but here it is. The collision system for that level is dodgy and unfavourable. http://rapidshare.de/files/23019870/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html Just one last stage.

I've watched your run all the way through (I mean...so far) and its so far so good :D. There are a few kinks in the thing so I hope when you go for your ACTUAL run (when you start again) you'll sort them out. Stop stopping at the end of stages. I know its been said a gazillion times to you but let's just make it a gazillion and one. Your GH2 run is excellent to say the least. The interesting bit to see though will be the bit which shows whether you're REALLY up to it (i.e when you have to do the stages without collecting 50 rings). I'd love to see your run up beside JXQs. Your routes are creative, and I see no BIG kinks anywhere. What I think you need a good look at is the special stages. Try and get as quick a time as you possibly can in them. Good luck!!!!
I'm not here to do the sonic speedruns. I'm here to WATCH and ASSIST with the sonic speedruns.
