I think someone should do this run, it's faster than the other two and there are quite a few shortcuts within the levels. I started one, but If it's for pure speed it's terrible. I've done up to the Launch Base Zone if you want to look at it, getting all the emeralds by the first ring in Carnival Zone (I've done better at proper speed though) and using Super Sonic throughout. I found a glitch in this level though when I was playing it and didn't want to retry it as it was so annoying the part I was at that I had gone through a lot of the rerecords (The is in the Carnival Night Zone). I'm sure it can easily be beaten and can easily have more interesting things in it, but I was doing it for fun at the time. If I get through it, I might do a retry before September. You can get this at my new born, but rarely updated http://www.freewebs.com/gamemoviefiles/. If anyone wants their movie there (not .avi please) just follow the About page. I havn't bothered to make a requests page yet.

Yeah. This run is.... severely unimpressive. Although there are a few spots that you went that I normally don't go to. Mainly with Tails carrying you around in Hydrocity. Maybe I'll do a run without worrying about rerecords as an example. P.s. this works with Sonic and Knuckles & Sonic 3 (JUE) [!]

Way ahead of you. Sonic only, going for speed in terms of the game timer rather than real-time, and not bothering with the emeralds. Note that returning to checkpoints (after entering bonus stages or dying) resets the timer to the start of the second that you first touched it (e.g. hit a checkpoint at 0:10.99, and the timer starts at 0:10.00 when resuming). Also, intentionally dying at the start of some acts means you restart it slightly further forward. A good example of this is Angel Island 2, where an intentional death can save 6 seconds. Postponed. Times below are now in regard to a normal run. Current Status - Completed Angel Island 1: 0:45 Angel Island 2: 1:21 Hydrocity 1: 0:47 Hydrocity 2: 1:28 Marble Garden 1: 1:05 Marble Garden 2: 1:45 Carnival Night 1: 0:44 Carnival Night 2: 1:56 Icecap 1: 1:41 Icecap 2: 0:46 Launch Base 1: 1:52 Launch Base 2: 1:11 Mushroom Hill 1: 0:50 Mushroom Hill 2: 1:03 Flying Battery 1: 1:45 Flying Battery 2: 3:08 Sandopolis 1: 2:03 Sandopolis 2: 2:15 Lava Reef 1: 1:42 Lava Reef 2: 3:02 Hidden Palace: 0:27 Sky Sanctuary: 1:53 Death Egg 1: 1:40 Death Egg 2:2:56

I am going to redo it sometime, although by then I'm sure you guys will have a much faster version EDIT: How in the world can you do Angel Island 1 in 0:44! Any chance of seeing it?

I'm sure I could get timers like that too if I felt like wasting 10 minutes and a life at the final checkpoint of an act.

I pity you for even considering that as an option.

Thanks, I'll be sure to try some things out. [EDIT: BTW, I've just updated my site with the first act. I've decided to do it with the emeralds as I wanted other people to be able to see the real ending. It's a different link than on the Genesis Movie thread so you'll have to go through my site to get it until the thread is updated. I've kept the old one up there, so if anyone doesn't like the faster one they can still download it. I'll probably update it sometime, but I'll concentrate on this one mainly. Don't forget, you can email your movies there as well, but don't all of you, I don't want to be banned from this site!]

I believe his point was that the "tricks" so common at TSC for getting a lower reading on the in-game timer don't really have a use in making an entertaining time attack for this site. As he pointed out, you can obtain even lower times by running your time out at the last checkpoint of every act. Since it is possible to get enough extra lives throughout the game to do this in every act, there is no reason not to do it, if minimizing the in-game timer is your only goal. The decision to utilize checkpoints to lower the in-game timer in one way and not another is an arbitrary one, and as such it is not clear where you should draw the line. If you decide you want to do one, but not the other, what justification do you have for eliminating the other strategy? True, it would make a long, boring ass movie, but it would also ostensibly meet your goal of minimizing the time displayed on screen when each level ends. A more laudable goal which would undoubtedly make a more entertaining video would be to just run through the game as fast as possible, only using checkpoints when picking up a shield is actually more time efficient. If you end up making a video that is nothing more than a bunch of runs as they would appear on TSC, the video will be a disappointment. TSC focuses on a very specific goal, to lower the time displayed on the in-game timer when each level ends, within the bounds of some arbitrary rules. Time attacks in general focus on a very different goal, to minimize the time taken to complete the entire game. If you actually do complete all of the levels of S3&K in TSC fashion, do not be surprised to find that a month or two later your video is obsoleted because someone has effortlessly made one that is 20% faster.

I'm actually doing two runs simultaneously :) # The previously mentioned run. # A run working in regard to real-time rather than game-time. The way I'm doing it is using the first one to experiment with routes. Then, once I'm satisfied, I redo it in the second run without entering as many checkpoints (The only one I've considered using so far is the last check on Marble Garden 1). Once I've finished, I'll probably do another run which involves getting all the emeralds and relentlessly abusing Super/Hyper Sonic all the way to the Doomsday Zone. Annoying fact: Finishing a level with the timer slightly under a minute works out slower than over a minute because there is no way to skip the massive point bonus it gives you. If game time is the only important thing, then I'd basically have to make purposefully crappy runs on some levels so I don't finish in less than a minute. This is not right. (Edit: Just calculated it. Times above 53.33s end up taking longer than if you'd waited for 60s)

I guess I'm glad I got over that time! After trying hard to improve the first level with no luck (some of you guys could probably do better) but I'm going onto act 2 as I'm too annoyed with this. [Edit: Do you guys think I should fly to the right at the beginning of Hydrocity or go underwater? Underwater would be faster overall because of the time taken to fly (I think), but this would mean something not everybody does]

Sorry for the double, but I wanted people to know I've updated my site with a new act. It's only version one, but what do you guys think? Also, I'm still waiting for an answer to the question in the previous post.

I would do a preliminary run of each and keep the one you like more.

Thanks, I can't believe I didn't think of that before. I'm completely remaking my run at the slowest frame rate (That's right, 6% maximum speed). It's looking a lot better than both the one I've got at the moment, but I'm going to start again. Just one question, so any of you guys know how many revs until full speed in the super spin? I don't want to be revving too much.

Try 9 (3 with each button).

It's 6 revs. A full speed spindash can be released in 8 frames. e.g. Down, A, B, C, A, B, C, Release You can tell if you've done it right by the sound it makes. You basically hear 6 identical blips before the release sound. If any of the blips sounds different, you messed up. After a while of inactivity, I've resumed progress on my own run. I've postponed the 'level at a time' one for now, simply because it's less fun to watch. I'll finish it later. (note: times in my earlier post have been edited)

Your times are a bit better than mine, but I suppose I am going off course to get emeralds as early as I can. So far on the first part of act 1 I've got 25 seconds for when I'm stopping right before the mini boss. At 9/10 seconds I'm going into the first ring of which I've really sped up the special stage (not by too much but it all counts).

Sorry to dp, but I thought I should update you guys who are waiting for this run (if there are any). I've managed to shave another few seconds off my time thanks to SprintGod but unfortunately I havn't had much time to do this run (or update my website). I am planning to continue with both when I get the time so hopefully no one will out run me before i even finish!

Let's bring this thread back to the top, as this run is definitely being completed (at last count, 4 levels to go - Sky Sanctuary, Death Egg 1/2, and the final boss).

sorry for the wait, and i'm afraid i have nothing new. I've been on holiday in Switzerland and havn't had time. If you want me to finish the slow run I will as it will take me a lot less time than to complete a full speed run. I won't post it on this site though as it would be too slow. Just say if you want the slower one.
