Yet another warp run for SMB2u. The strategy for the entire run is pretty much the same as Phil. I took different paths just so everyone could actually see that I was doing something different. This movie was VERY hard to make. Phil did an excellent job manipulating the game to do what he wanted. I went through and found frames I didn't think where there. I spent a very long time on this run. I hope that if I am beaten, that it's not by the number of frames I was able to find, hehe. Anyway, here's the rundown:
1-1: -0[0.000s] - unless someone can beat it faster then 2 or 3 frames, birdo will shoot the egg at teh same time within a few frames.
1-2: -6[0.100s] - I found some very mysterious frames, 4 came from teh carpet ride. I tried for a VERY long time to get this one...the other two were mysteriously from birdo.
1-3: -0[0.000s] - Nothing new here.
4-1: -0[0.000s] - Nothing new here.
4-2: -0[0.000s] - Nothing new here.
6-1: -5[0.083s] - Most of these frames were from the sand digging area. How I managed to squeeze out these guys...I thought that sand area was perfect when I first started.
6-2: -0[0.000s] - Nothing new here.
6-3: -0[0.000s] - Nothing new here.
7-1: -5[0.083s] - I saved a few frames on the ladder glitching part.
7-2: -3[0.050s] - I managed to gain one pixel, and when going for the birdo with the key, I manage to start my forward momentum 2 frames faster. I also saved two frames on the last bird head thing, but when I finished wart I was knocked down a frame.
All in all I saved 19 frames, or 0.317s. This time save was also just enough to make the submission time round down instead of rounding up like Phils'. (previous run is 07:54 and the new one is 07:53)

Was this less entertaining than Phil's run? If no, then I should ask: was this faster than Phils run? That's a yes. A faster movie without decreasing entertainment value and you don't want to publish it?

But primarily I try to work trough the big backlog of submissions we have. >Time for more judges. :P Currently there are a few runs which have been sitting on Accepted status for a while without anyone encoding them. Perhaps we should get more encoders first.

After I finish tuning my Linux up I can do some encoding, my PC has lots of idle time that encoding could use ;)

Some encoders like me for example also don't have a large upload capacity, so prefer to stick to encoding runs that will produce tiny AVIs. I also need to go setup NES and SNES encoding I wouldn't mind encoding the 10 minute videos.

I think we should add Anonymous to the list of initial contributors for this run's description, along with Sleepz and Genisto. Anonymous did find the most time-saving trick for this game, the up+down ladder zoom. Asking to be an editor will probably come around and bite me in the ass someday with ideas like this.

I think that anonymous once had a name (because these boards don't allow anonymous posting), but that it was removed when his account expired. Or something along those lines. Perhaps it is possible to somehow retrieve the name of this benefactor with the wonders of modern technology?

When I purge inactive users or remove them after banning for abuse or something, I try to preserve their names in the posts. (Normally, there is only an ID link, and if the ID is deleted, there is nothing remaining identifying the original poster.) However, it seems to have happened quite often that the identify has been lost anyway.

I did some research, and it appears that the name of this anonumous person was "Zaku" (or some variant of it). Proof: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=86&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=176 I agree that his name should go in the movie description with the others.

I enjoyed your comments on intellectual property (though I know you don't want to call it that, I think it is a fitting generalized term because it is generally accepted by those who know the nuances of the limited monopolies the term implies). In any case, I see strategies as a trade secret until they are revealed. The only way a strategy can be owned is by keeping it a secret, otherwise it is like a patent with no vesting period -- immediately known and with unlimited usage. btw, I'm surprised such a small improvement (a large part of which was using up+down) meant this run should have a star while the previous run should not. Did this run just show how good Phil's really was? Because, to the new user (who "recommended" runs appear to be for) they would probably be no more impressed with this run than Phil's...

TAS's are more like open source software than conventional speedruns, and when you improve an open-source program you don't take all the previous contributors off of the credits. It looks to me (a random lurker) that this run was a collaborative effort by SleepZ, Phil and DonamerDragon, etc.

Why not list ALL obsoleted versions of a movie on the movies entry. That way all authors get credit.

Thanks. :) I'm pretty sure it cannot qualify as a trade secret, either. According to Wikipedia, while the precise definition of what constitutes a trade secret varies with jurisdiction, there are certain common factors, namely (quoting): 1. is not generally known to the relevant portion of the public; 2. confers some sort of economic benefit on its holder (where this benefit must derive specifically from its not being generally known, not just from the value of the information itself); 3. is the subject of reasonable efforts to maintain its secrecy. 1. may or may not apply here; 2. most certainly does not, and 3. also doesn't, I think, at least as long as the person finding a new strategy doesn't keep it secret (which would pretty much defeat the purpose of looking for new strategies - namely, to be able to record new, faster movies). But IANAL (not at all!), so I should probably shut my big yap before I say something stupid. ^_~

Aren't they all there, anyway? I mean, you can click on the movie that a movie obsoleted, and from there you can see what that movie obsoleted...
