I'm having a bit of trouble with 5-3, the route I planned isn't working out, could anyone with the inclination help me confirm that you can't wall jump off of this wall:

As far as I can tell, wall jumps don't work anywhere in 5-3. I tried briefly and couildn't do better than 236 time units there, but it seems like something smoother must be possible.

They do work on other walls in that stage. The down and dirty on wall jumps is you have to be exactly 2 units away from a wall and backflip into it, if your sprite changes to a skid then you wait one frame and then jump. If it doesn't change to a skid then you reposistion and try again. It might be the posistion of the bridge block. I've been trying to hack the ROM to remove the block there and test it.

OK. In that case, there's no position to jump from that causes the skidding animation on that part of the wall, however, it DOES work to wall-jump from the wall on the right of that (after getting up to the same height as the switch) straight up to the key, which is probably faster than taking the ladder up anyways. I think it's also fastest to not flip the switch (just glitch the key down through the elevators to the door, or it's also possible to go up through the ceiling but that probably wouldn't be faster here). EDIT: here are two vbm's of that level which you might find interesting: http://www.filespace.org/nitsuja/donkeykong_5-3_glitches.zip

Possible to go through the ceiling? How? I can get the key through the ceiling, but not Mario. Finished the level in a slightly different manner which is probably faster anyway. Update:

Did you see my edit? I was 1 time unit faster in 5-3 (maybe should have been 2 if I'd played more precisely). I also included a vbm of me going through the ceiling even though it's slower, in case it might be useful somewhere else. (Basically, if you do a handstand jump at the instant something pushes you partly into the ceiling you'll go through it.) Also, I think I know why you can't wall-jump off of that wall. It's because wall-jumps only work on the left side of walls, you can't do them unless you're facing to the right. Oh, and there's also a bug that lets you walk through spikes and survive, but it only works on spikes that don't have walls on the edge like in stage 3-1, and you have to jump from one of those edges to get away safely, so it might not be very useful. edit: looked at your 5-2 and I notice a pause on top of the mummie's head, maybe you can avoid that by doing a back flip and catching the hammer at the right time going over his head?

No, I didn't see the edit, but I do recall doing a walljump on the right side of the wall. Specifically in 1-4 while I was testing to see if I could glitch myself into Kong's area from right after the first set of ladders. Checking out the file. (Thanks ^^;)

Nitsuja rocks. Plain and simple. Saved me two time units.

If anyone can come up with some faster strategies on 5-9 or 5-10 please let me know. The pauses in 5-12 are because if you pick up the masked guys too soon they don't do damage. Link

A faster way to start 5-9 is to backflip->wall-jump, jump, backflip->wall-jump up to the first switch you activate instead of climbing up 2 ladders to get there. If you can walljump off of a handstand jump then that could be substituted for the first backflip to reach the wall sooner. (And 5-6 looks kind of slow for some reason, with the way the hammer was handled.)

By the elevator near the key?

I would have lost the hammer if I would have fallen the entire way and rolled. A roll forces forward movement, meaning I'd have to turn around to grab the hammer anyway. Then turn around again. And because I hit the ground the running guy wakes up earlier meaning I have to kill him with the hammer. :/

Watching the video again I noticed a few places where I could improve it, and I've given hex editting a shot. It should be about 10-15 seconds faster when I get done.

I've been having trouble getting back into gear with this because I cannot safely hex edit anything (and know that it's as fast as possible), but I have no intention of leaving this project to rot. Mostly the problem is I have finally gotten my computer into my room, with electricity and all that stuff (yey!). I unfortunately haven't actually installed visual boy advance on this computer yet. And whenever I think about it I'm always side tracked. However, next week I have an *entire* week off of work. So expect at least a little progress then.

I only got some work done on this. I'm going to try to figure out exactly how the randomness system works, because it doesn't seem simply based on the timeunits, but it does seem based on some sort of internal timer that only updates every so often. Reason being, I've gotten a 135 in 3-4, and I should be able to improve that to 137 or so if the luck is just right. (Compared to 120 in the currently published WIP) So far I've saved 2 timeunits in three stages.

Well, I lied, after just Stage 3 I'm already 27 seconds faster. Though I doubt I'll gain much on myself in Stage 4, I know at least one level in Stage 5 I can save about 5 seconds in, and another where I can save 20 or more. Thanks goes to nitsuja for the spiffy 3-6 trick.

Damn Omni, just when I thought you were on the final version... there's too many ways to tweak out more improvements in this game, you may never finish :D Still, the revised run looks good so far. Here's hoping you won't have to restart it again.

Nice improvements on 3-4 and 3-6. 3-4's previous slowness really bugged me before, it's nice to see it was for the most part remedied. This run is getting better and better when it was pretty darn good to begin with; keep it up :)

Tell me about it, here's two more timeunits saved on 3-1 because of another cool glitch care of nitsuja.
