I already think it deserves a star. ) Non stop ninja action and bouncing around. Shows oddities and tricks. Very quick. Lots of variety. Plus it is mario 64, a well known game. Unless it slows down, I will vote yes. I loved all of the new stars, with the exception of the snowman one. Maybe I missed something, but you appeared lost in it... I might be wrong though. I will watch again later.

Wait, doesn't your movement affect its movement? Maybe you could guide it to go faster. I don't know.

Wow, that was just amazing. I'm sorry, but I couldn't think of anything to improve it other than the obvious things (are you sure you couldn't get the CCM 100 coin star without sliding all the way down and then going back up even though it wouldn't save any time, etc).
Sliding all the way down and then going back up was awesome! The drama... the suspense... the horror as the penguin comes roaring down the slide and into both Mario and the camera! That was my favorite part.

I would like to say that I think the "get snowman's body" star would look better if you would actually slide all the way to the pedestal with the head instead of jumping down and getting that 1-up. Then after getting to (jumping over?) the pedestal, you've shown the audience that you're way ahead and can proceed to do a bit of showing off before the body arrives.
I would agree with you if he still has time to get the 1-Up and come back in time. It would look a bit less like he was wasting time for the sake of wasting time, but it would still add to his life count which will likely be quite large by the end of the game. Although the 1-Up system is quite different in SM64, part of the fun of any SMB3 run is watching Mario bounce off cannon balls and earn 99 lives during the auto-scrolling levels. I like seeing how many lives/how high a score can be achieved as a secondary objective. If no time is lost, kick the game's butt as hard as possible by also achieving an incredible score/life count.

It was possible to get the 100 coin star sooner (even though that wouldn't change the total time at all), but that way the penguin wouldn't hit mario while he was celebrating, which looks very funny, imo.

Okay, I'll trust your judgement on this. Yeah, it was funny to see Mario shoved away by the penguin while celebrating his new star. It had a sort of cartoony quality to it as the star was left behind.

I wholeheartedly agree. Your run is not merely fast, it's innovative, surprising, creative and entertaining. This could become my all-time favorite TAS (no pressure).

Cool, when i saw spezzafer's run i said somewhere that a 120 star run would be my favorite in the site, then i thought to myself i should do it then. But even though this is "my" run, the special thanks list will be very long.

great job so far FODA, you've done several things better than my run's stars (the wall kicks star especially) did you try to do a stomp right under the snowman's head star right before grabbing it, because you'll land much faster and the victory sequence should end several frames faster

what do you mean? to talk to snowman so he can release the star i need to be touching the ground. hey nice to see you here :) there are many ways to improve the 16 star run, some 20 seconds.

when you jump (as you're directly under the star) press the Z button as late as you possibly can right before touching the star and you should land much faster (thanks to geminisaint for this info) keep it up, it looks very neat so far!

Yea but that is only good if the star appears while i'm doing the jump. In this case the star will only appear if i talk to the snowman, and to do that i must be on the ground.

Sorry, I'm not so good at these things, but why does the movie stop playing when I load the save state?

You must mark the option "read-only" before playing it back. By loading a savestate without this option marked you have just erased everything after that savestate, so you have to download it again. Sorry about that.

actually it works if you are directly or almost directly (which you were in the snowman's head star) under the star; pressing Z has the stomp effect of falling down really fast if you press it right before touching the star, but you must be under the star here is a video (recorded from FODA's exact position before getting the star) http://rapidshare.de/files/11900974/asdf.avi.html

Has anybody put "Why does the movie stop playing when I load the save state?" into the FAQ yet?

Nice video spezzafer, i wasn't aware of that possibility, i might want to check out the entire run and see if there's any major mistake due to that : /

I use that Z trick when collecting stars a lot on my crappy coinless run, I guess I just assumed you knew about it and had found faster ways. I think I may have actually tried to use it too much and lost some frames along the way setting up for it in my run heh, but, oh well, it was only with 8 directions, no need to nit pick it that much. One question...why was it faster to enter WF with the backflip while all the other times it was faster to turn around and longjump? Also, do you have any intention of hex editing in some of the longjumps at the beginning of several of the JRB stars (as long as it doesnt affect timing of certain things)? I know it wont save much, but, if it turns out to be not so hard to do, it might be worth it.

i guess it wasn't experimented to do a dive as soon as possible at the top and then roll to the star. it was indeed hard to do that without hitting the wall or the ceiling so that might have been the reason.

I think i'll try to improve JRB after the run is completed and hex-edit it all in, but adding just longjumps is practically impossible. If hex-editing doesn't work, it'll stay the way it is (which is not that bad really). About the backflip jump to enter whomp's fortress painting i did that for variety. I'll do some different ways of entering the painting in other moments of the TAS as well, to please the viewers who aren't fast-forwarding between stars. It adds 2 or 4 frames max in each case and i won't abuse it, i'll use mostly longjumps anyway which are the fastest.

Darn right it's not bad! I can only imagine how much work this has been, but I assume that frame precision is much easier in 2D NES sidescrollers than it is in a 3D N64 game with 360 degrees of direction, plus degrees of tilt. If this run gets submitted with known improvable areas of a few frames here and there, I don't see anyone voting No to it. Besides, it would take some of the fun out of TASing this game if someone played it perfectly. Part of the fun of these runs is waiting for someone to beat it, and seeing how long it takes and how much they beat it by. This movie is going to be amazing, and later on maybe we can all be amazed again when you or someone else finds a way to make it even better. Keep up the good work. :)

I am surprised about 2 things: that you choosed exactly the same route wtih me for the 100 coins and that nobody "sees" some little things that can be improved and can save some extra time: 1)The slide star: You long jump to the false direction inside the chimney. You get far away from the optimal route. Check this video (time evtl. the way I get to the chimney): http://rapidshare.de/files/11915803/4.1.Filimonas_Slip_Slidin__Away_0.27.wmv.html 2)The 100 coins: I long jump at the beginning, but I don't know if this is faster. After the red coin you do some jump tricks that look cool, but cost you time. I get to the chimney using the special triple jump, but try to do a simple triple jump. I also noticed (compared with the blue coin at the beginning of the slide) that the long jump cost more time, than just running. Try to wall-kick at the end, the way that I do it and get the star before you cross the finish line. If you can still win the penguin it will look cool! http://rapidshare.de/files/11916064/4.7.Filimonas_100_coins_1.02__1.19_.wmv.html 3)The red coins: I generally didn't like how you get to the 2nd coin. Then slide to the 3rd coin and backflip direct up to the platform to slide down right afterwards, Keep pressed A when you land so that you reach a little further. After the teleport just slide with the chest.I think it is faster. Check this video from Curtis: http://www.vortiginous.com/cbright/Curtis%20Bright%20-%20Frosty%20Slide%20for%208%20red%20coins%20-%2044.avi I hope I helped.

i'll come back and edit this later (right now i'm downloading these avis), but i have to ask while you're checking: how fast is the record for the princess secret slide using that strategy? is it good the way i did? ------- edited part: 1) humm interesting, when i tried, if i went directly like that i wouldn't have enough speed so i'd fall on that ramp instead of falling on the correct one down below. 2) wouter jansen sent me nearly 1 gb of AVI of speedruns, but i noticed i don't have any movie from you. that 100 coin was excellent, indeed it looks a lot like my TAS (or the other way around heh) anyway, i did exactly that wallkick to get the 100 coin star but it ended up that the penguin wasn't fast enough to hit mario, so i went further inside and then back outside for the star. I guess i can slowdown on the race instead so that wallkick will work with the penguin. 3) that third one, there are things done better and worse. I think the most obvious thing that works better than what i did is sliding after the second red coin instead of longjumping. that video is also excellent, it surely will be good comparison. I'm not sure about doing a longer 2nd jump after falling from the 3rd coin to the 4th coin though because that takes me farther from the 5th coin. (but it's mostly better aproaches, so much that it beats my TAS for over 1 second...) amazing stuff.

haha nice vid! humm it surely would be awesome if all stars (applyable) in the 120 stars TAS had a timer like that!
