I am asking for opinions here. I have recently discovered the world of emulation and I am going back and picking up the peices I never had. Starting with RPGS. I already enjoyed Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana. I am currently on FF3 for SNES. What is the next great RPG I should play? I hear good things about FF1 for NES.

Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals for the SNES. This is my absolute favorite rpg of all time. The series is also known as Estopolis Denki I think. EDIT: And Terranigma is great too, although a bit straightforward with the plot.

IMO the music is better than in any Final Fantasy, I love the ending and the whole plot. It doesn't have that much optional stuff to do after the main plot like in Final Fantasies, but it has some good puzzles and stuff. Plus there are no random encounters in dungeons, you can see the monsters like in Chrono Trigger. The world map still has them though. It also has these "capsule monsters" which act a bit like GFs in FF8. Limit breaks are in, too. All in all you can never learn to like it by just reading this, you've got to play it.

"What is the next great RPG I should play? I hear good things about FF1 for NES." I suppose it depends on your opinion-- I personally can't stand FF1. Lufia 2 definitely rocks though, especially the.. what's it called.. optional dungeon-quest-thingy in it.. basically, it involves starting a randomly-generated dungeon with no equipment at all and at really low levels, and you get to work your way through up to 100 levels, picking up equipment and gaining levels as you go. It's so basic and simple, yet somehow so addictive. And save states can remove the original console annoyance of getting really, really 'deep' into the dungeon and then dying. :P I'd recommend playing a game called 'Soul Blazer', too. It's very simplistic, with a Zelda-style way of defeating enemies. But, the coolest part is every time you clear a portal of monsters (there's hundreds of them), something new gets built in the village, a new path in a dungeon opens, a new townsperson comes to the village, or you gain an item of some kind. That little 'reward' system is what makes the game so cool.

Ah yes the Ancient Cave. I have yet to see anything like that in any other RPG.

Hmm, a bit iffy, but you may enjoy Secret of Evermore. It's not Secret of Mana and if you expect it to be SoM you'll be disappointed. But it's a great game which basically has the same controls as SoM. It's not a typical fantasy-RPG, but different parts of the world resemble different times on earth. It has an original spell-casting method, alchemy, for which you have to collect ingredients to cast spells. Quite a good story and some good humor IMO, though some people just find it annoying. :-P Then there's Seiken Densetsu 3, AKA Secret of Mana 2. Great game with quite some replay value due to different starts and endings for different characters, as well as a pretty drastic character customisation. And Lufia 2 is indeed a great game. It was my second SNES game I think and I still play it now and then. I got the Dutch version, but I hear the US version has some nasty bugs. Still a great game though. Pretty huge world, some nice little side-quest thingies like collecting dragon eggs. And then there the ancient cave... It's a whole game on it's own. Many people have literally wasted hundreds of hours on it. :-) Well, there's plenty more, but I can't go and recommend them all I suppose. :-P Some other good RPG's you could check out are Earthbound, Breath of Fire 2 (BoF 1 wasn't good IMO, but 2 is pretty decent), Super Mario RPG, FF4, FF5 and plenty of others.

If you want to play a Final Fantasy game, i'd go with FF3j for NES. You can find a patch or a prepatched version pretty easily. It is easily the best FF game for the NES, and probably the best RPG on the NES, too. Heck, I could say it's the best game for the NES.

Soul Blazer series (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma) odd-numbered Final Fantasy series (FF1, FF3, FF5, FFT, FF9, FF11, FFTA, FFX-2) Mother series (Mother, Earthbound) Xenosaga series (Xenosaga, Xenosaga 2, Xenogears (= Xenosaga 5)) Ogre Battle series (Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, Ogre Battle 64, Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis, etc) Tenchi wo Kurau series (Destiny of an Emperor, Destiny of an Emperor 2) etc.

Suikoden I highly recommend for any RPG player that wants an excellent story. Looks dated, and the combat system isn't necessarily the greatest, but the storyline is very gripping. I could recommend a ton of RPG's in general, but by platform -- NES - Final Fantasy 1 SNES - Final Fantasy 3 (6j), Chrono Trigger PS1 - Suikoden 1 and 2, Final Fantasy IX, Lunar: SSSC, Final Fantasy 5, Grandia, Star Ocean 2 PS2 - Suikoden 3, Disgaea (Strategy/RPG), Champions of Norrath (a lot like Diablo/Baldurs Gate) DC - Skies of Arcadia, Grandia 2 GBA - Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (Strategy/RPG)

Yes, yes... That game is quite similar to the first Final Fantasy, but about ten times more fun.

I'm sure we've all been in a "best final fantasy" argument at some point, but honestly FF7 is my favorite game of all time. If you've beaten it, you should definitely take the time to read the plot analysis found at . It clarifies the entire plot, mentioning parts you almost definitely missed the first time around, and made me like it even more than I originally did. FF5 however, had my favorite skill system in the series(though I didn't play FF3j-not sure what the difference in skill system is between the two). I loved secret of mana but did not enjoy secret of evermore, though it was long ago and I was expecting pretty much the same stuff. But being able to cast your spells from actual items was not very enjoyable for me(call spells especially). Soul blazer is a fantastic game, and to me blows illusion of gaia out of the water. I've barely heard of terranigma, I didn't know it was in the same series. Personally, I enjoyed both breath of fire 1 and 2. You have a wide selection to choose from- I know I'm not alone in thinking the super nintendo is the best console out there.

Imagine that, instead of the system in FF5, you automatically had all jobs Mastered, and all the abilities (action and otherwise) from that job were automatically equipped when you are that job, but you can't equip any abilities from any other jobs. Now, even though you can use all those skills, you suck at them - even attacking. But the longer you stay in the job, the better at it you get, and your success rate for those skills improves. When you try to change jobs, however, you have a problem - every job has a table of costs for other jobs (similar jobs have low costs) and you have to spend soething called CP to change. (you get about 3 CP per random battle, but it's shared between ALL party members and you can hold only a maximum of 255.. and since job changes cost 20~40, that means you can only change jobs about 8 times before needing to fight 90-someodd battles to recharge) ..but the more skill you have in a job, the less it costs to change to that job (the cost goes down one CP for every level of the job you have.. and jobs level about twice as fast as your character does). It's more similar to the system in FF11 than that in 5, T, or TA.
