I'm wondering what the best controllers are for playing NES, SNES, or N64 games on my PC. I'm sure there's a different best controller for each system. Which do you all think is best? does it matter if i'm doing TAS or just playing around with a game? i currently use the MS sidewinders. they do ok, but kinda suck for diagonals. otherwise, they are ok.

You can do TAS (or even play) with a keyboard. Imo PS2 controller is best for playing.

The best controller for NES is the NES pad. The best controller for SNES is the SNES pad. The best controller for N64 is the N64 pad. For timeattacks a keyboard is better.

I play with a PS2 controller via USB adapter. $10US, it's cheaper than a new controller, and much better than PC controllers IMO. It is a bit odd at first trying to set it up for N64, but I got used to it. When I was TASing, I used a keyboard.
If for honesty, you want apologies, I don't sympathize.

This depends on where your comfort zone is and how many hotkeys you actually need. I found it useful to assign gamepad buttons for pause, frame-advance, load, and save. I think Randil has mentioned that he also does this. A device with a lot of buttons like the GameCube controller would work well in such a setup, while on the other hand a NES controller wouldn't make much sense due to its lack of buttons. Lately I've used an SNES controller for all my gaming and TAS stuff. SNES: Here is what I have, or what Shinryuu and FODA wish they had. PlayStation: Here is just one example of the adapters used by Bablo, Zoizite, and FODA. I bought this particular one back when it was known as the Super Dual Box.

that's cool. i didn't know there was adaptors. I'd have to dig out my old consoles to get my crappy controllers back out. i just play emulators any more because its easier than keeping 6 systems hooked up to my TV. i just keep GC and PS2 hooked up, the rest are in a box in my basement or at my parents house.

I use keyboard and that's it. When playing games, I have my right hand on the arrow keys and left hand on the letters. I arrange the controls so that jump is on the inside (index finger) and fire on the outside.

I used the keyboard before. but then I got me this really great gamepad on which you could set up keyboard commands to the gamepadbuttons. The gamepad looks almost exactly like a Playstation gamepad, and I've assigned load state for L2 button, save state for R2, pause game for R1 and frame advance for L1. This works really good in my opinion. And I have set up the A and B turbo buttons for the circle and triangle buttons. So I can really recommend for all of you to get yourselves on of these gamepads, they do wonders with at least platformgames. :)

How can you TAS using only 1 savestate slot? i find it really annoying to switch through savestates using "increase/decrease savestate number". I need to manually pick savestate from the number and then hit save or load, or else i usually load a wrong savestate at some point, which really pisses me off.

Hehe, I don't. :) I agree it's a pain to switch using "increase/decrease savestate number" so to be more precise, the R2 button is bound to "save state as..." and by clicking on, say, 5 on the keyboard, R2 saves to savestate 5. So I don't really use the the increase/decrease savestate number command. The same thing goes for the "load state"-bound L2 button: it's bound to "load state from..." and I can choose which savestate by clicking on the numbers on the keyboard.

The keyboard. I've done all my emulated speedruns with a keyboard, even though I have a PS2 controller adapter. To me, there is no alternative.

I'd say a keyboard is the best to use in a TAS. But of course I like my original controllers for each system. Besides the original controllers for Genesis. Those are not good if you ask me. Better buy a turbo controller that is better shaped.

The best controller ever is NES' controller. It's very square and pointy but it has the best feeling in it. It's just classic :)

The only controllers I'm familiar with is either the NES pad or the keyboard. The GBA SP has a rather nice touch to it, although it might be just that it resembles the NES pad so much.

I use my original SNES controller for TASing and normal playing. FODA: If you wish to play on a SNES controller buy one along with the needed USB-adapter here: http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=160&products_id=4234&lsaid=304970
