I get black borders on the sides when playing PS1 games with the Nymashock core. I have the default Display settings (maintain aspect ratio (letterbox) checked, Direct3D9 selected etc). Is this normal, and can you remove them?

Black borders is the active area, this is normal.

Can they be removed? Should they be removed? Especially when generating the video file.

They're generally not removed. If you do want to remove it you can just do it in post when editing it since your goal is a video file.

Yes, one can edit it in post. But then it has to be re-encoded which means some quality loss, so it would be better to be able to remove it when it's generated.

I contribute to BizHawk as Linux/cross-platform lead, testing and automation lead, and UI designer. This year, I'm experimenting with streaming BizHawk development on Twitch. nope Links to find me elsewhere and to some of my side projects are on my personal site. I will respond on Discord faster than to PMs on this site.
Hey look buddy, I'm an engineer. That means I solve problems. Not problems like "What is software," because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of philosophy. I solve practical problems. For instance, how am I gonna stop some high-wattage thread-ripping monster of a CPU dead in its tracks? The answer: use code. And if that don't work? Use more code.

The Octoshock core has it.

That doesn't work for rendering the video.

As a regular AviSynth user, I generally only use lossless codecs prior to the final encoding run, so that there is no quality loss during editing. This is just a side note.

I actually crop them in AviSynth myself. Speaking which, shouldn't PS1 resolution be 320x240? I thought this is the target resolution.
