I was just talking with my friend about this - what are some games that have a really good boss or final boss battle? Good characteristics (to me) include good music, a good attack variety to the boss, and good difficulty without being cheap. One boss I always liked was the Mantis from the first Turok game. I know there are cooler ones than this, but I'm drawing a blank right now.

I'm gonna go ahead and say every final boss in the Sonic series. At the very least, S3&K and the 3 3d games. (that's a lot of 3s) Also, Skies of Arcadia.

I would vote for the last Sephiroth form in Final Fantasy 7, you know when he has turned into the one-winged angel. For two reasons: 1. The music kicks ass. 2. His attacks are cool, especially Super Nova. On the other hand, his difficulty varies a lot depending on what level you're on when you meet him, but if you're pretty low leveled, he's a tough boss to meet. So I'd vote for him. Oh yeah, and the last boss in BG2 - Throne of Baal, that's a tough one. Keeps spawning demons at you, not fun...

1) Vergil 2 from Devil May Cry 3
  • if youve completed the game before, you can have the beowulf gauntlets at this point. the gauntlets and agni&rudra on swordmaster mode make for a battle that so entertaining, it can draw a crowd. and the music is so good that it made me download the album
2) Boss from Metal Gear Solid 3
  • A showdown to the death with your trainer and mentor in a field of flowers. its a perfect ending to the perfect game. also, when boss's life gets below half, the intrumental version of "snake eater" sets in and gets gradually louder until someone wins the battle. i think its beautiful.
3) The final battle in FF8
  • unadulterated awesomeness.
4) Omega Weapon in FF8
  • same thing.

  • The Chrono Trigger final battle, especially the 2nd part which has really great music.
  • Several boss battles from Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter were quite memorable, and that game has very nice music everywhere.
  • Final Fantasy V final battle.
  • Maybe Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories final battle, although it was too drawn out.
  • Super Mario Bros 3 final battle.
  • Definitely NOT the Chrono Cross final battle.
  • Haven't played Xenosaga but its final battle has wonderful music.
  • Thanks for reminding me how to post bulleted lists.

I definitely have to say FF4. The music is so good that I kept playing the final battle again and again on the console. I was like 10 at the time. It's also nice and hard compared to the later FF games. I also like how everyone you've met on your journey gives you their strength. Just talking about it wants me to check if I still have a save at the final save point! SMB3 also comes to mind. I was a kid and I was so nervous my hands were shaking the first time I played it.

  • Yoshi's Island - No explanation needed
  • Metroid 1 - Kraid that doesn't suck ftw

Call me bizarre for this, but I like the final boss of Metamorphic Force for the arcade. The fellow just does not understand the term "die" and has three fairly tricky forms. The game itself is rather weird and cartoony, but it really improves on what X-Men didn't. Thank you, Konami! The voice acting is still bad, though. XD

Oh, and one of the boss fights from Mischief Makers stood out as being amazingly fun and original - "CERBERUS alpha" (Lunar), the multi-stage wolf/motorcycle riding boss that shoots giant ride-able missiles at you. I think that's my favorite boss fight of any game, actually.

Okay, I need to add this: The final boss in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, playing in Julius mode. I won't say any further since it's a pretty new game so I don't want to spoil it.

I'm not seeing any mention of fighting games and that makes me sad.
  • Geese Howard and Wolfgang Krauser in Fatal Fury Special. In particular, I consider Geese's theme song (especially that particular incarnation) to be one of the coolest things I've ever heard. Krauser gets mad props for using real Mozart!
  • Goro in the original Mortal Kombat is one of the most memorable bosses I ever faced. Not only was he an animated character in a game of real people, you could hear him roar and see the screen shake during the previous battle, adding to the overall anticipation of fighting him! Shang Tsung was totally anti-climactic afterwards.
  • The Yellow Devil in Rockman blew me away the first time I fought him.
  • Although the actual battle is rather easy, the entire empty castle and match with Dracula in Castlevania II is really cool.
  • Nearly every boss battle in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is sensational, but my personal favorite is Granfalloon/Legion.

Phantasmagoria, a bad horror adventure game with really bad actors. The game uses 7 CDs, and the final disc is absolutely shocking: ...Don pulls blade release lever and kills Adrienne with no resistance RESTART Unsuccessful attack using fireplace poker, Don pulls lever RESTART Unsuccessful attack using hammer, Don pulls lever RESTART Unsuccessful attack using glass shard, Don pulls lever RESTART Unsuccessful attack using free hand, Don pulls lever RESTART Adrienne pulls lever before Don stands up, killing herself RESTART Presentation of snowman Christmas ornament to Don Don discards snowman and pulls lever RESTART Adrienne pulls lever and kills Don, revelation of demon Demon kills Adrienne... Yes, some point-and-click adventure games have very nice "boss battles". Gabriel Knight is one of my favorites. Hm. Wonderboy in Monsterworld, chaotic final battle. Ultima VII Part II - The Serpent Isle, many amazing battles. Booga-Boo for C64, there was only one very tough enemy in the entire game.

Ok I finally thought of a few of my favorites:
  • Wily 1's Dragon from Mega Man 2 (he's just humongous for a regular NES boss)
  • First battle with Magus from Chrono Trigger (awesome music and fairly difficulty battle)
  • King K. Rool from Donkey Kong Country 2 (lots of different attack patterns, and nice music)
  • Culex from Super Mario RPG (lots of attacks not anywhere else in the game, and very hard)
  • Mother Brain from Super Metroid (more for the cinematic value that anything else)
  • Galamoth from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (as feitclub said, the bosses from this game are done very well)
  • The Metal Gear Ray Army from Metal Gear Solid 2 (just seeing them all lined up in the background is intimidating)

Definitely the final bosses of Seiken Densetsu 3, especially the "Dark Prince" who casts Death or status decreasing spells on you to kill you in one hit even with full HP if you are not careful. The music is also awesome and long there. Also: * Chrono Trigger: Lavos Core * Super Metroid: Ridley (he was a real pain the first time I battled him) * Secret of Evermore: Last Bosses Showdown (without Atlas glitch a torture) * Super Mario Bros 3: Bowser * Darkwing Duck: Steel Beak (a pain to shot him out of his coward-room without knowing the strategy)

Duriel was really the only boss in D2 that you could get to without being prepared for him, and really the only boss where it was overwhelmingly likely that that would be the case. I guarantee you the first time anyone stepped into that chamber they were slaughtered. Baal is annoying with his cloning and endless knockback and mana drain effects, but he doesn't wreck your @#$% the way Duriel did. That's why he'll always be my favorite boss.

Do you realize that we picked two bosses who occupy the same room? How's that for a coincidence?
