For those who do not know about this game

moon is an RPG released on PS in 1997 and celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2022. At the time of its release, the game was much talked about for its catchphrase, "No more hero" and for its gameplay, which is an RPG but does not involve defeating monsters. Due to the dissolution of the developer Lovedelic, the game was not playable on hardware other than PS for a long time, but it was ported to Switch in 2019 and to Steam in 2021.

About this game

The objective of the game is to go to the moon and open the door. In order to go to the moon, it is necessary to raise the level to 22 and collect 5 rocket parts, which are the conditions for clearing the game. Many events have detailed conditions for their occurrence at different times and on different days of the week, and the real challenge in creating the shortest possible time to clear the game is to construct an efficient chart that takes these conditions into account.

Relationship between TAS and RTA

This game is a recent addition to the RTA despite being an older game. (Registration on speedrun.com was in 2020). The early RTA records were very much influenced by the in-game time TAS I created way back when. The RTA caused a record fight. It has improved dramatically compared to the early charts. Around January 2023, the record was about 2h19m, but by March it had shrunk to about 2h3m25s. Because of the nature of the game and the waiting time, the concept of charting is not very different between RTA and TAS, and the charts are similar. This TAS will be the record based on that latest chart.

General Tips

The stories that affect speed in running RTAs are summarized on speedrun.com. And this is also helpful information for TAS.

PS vs Steam

RTA WR is faster than TAS. This is largely due to the hardware, which has a very long load time on PS. This results in the shocking fact that RTA is faster! (The player who recorded 2h3m25s in RTA and the creator of this TAS is the same person, me.)

Glitch for RTA only

Lehman glitch is used in RTA but not in TAS. The Lehman glitch is that if you get Lehman's love first in a separate saved data, you can get Lehman's love immediately in the separate data. However, this does not make sense in TAS, where the measurement starts from the power-on state.

> Darkman425: Talk about a good Moonday. Claiming for judging. As far as I can tell, this game is not registered on TASVideos and I am the first. Also, as far as I can currently find, there are no TAS by others and this is the fastest clear. As the description says, Steam is faster, but I don't know how to create a TAS on Steam. So, under the condition of PlayStation, I consider this to be the fastest TAS. Also, this game is quite popular among some people, as evidenced by the fact that it has been remade. There should be many people who want to see the shortest clear in this game. (I am also one of them.) With this in mind, I submitted this article to TASVideos. I hope it will reach people who want to see the shortest clearing of moon.

For time comparisons, I assume loading times are why this initially seems slower than the Switch and Steam rereleases. Is there anything outside of that where those versions would be faster than the PlayStation version that I should also know about?

It has nothing to do with the version of PlayStation, but I will tell you. English version has been added for Steam/PS4/PS5/switch. Along with this, Steam has added a language switch reset command with the L key. (PS4/PS5/switch has not been investigated) The RTA uses the reset by the L key instead of the normal reset.

Thanks to Spikestuff for figuring out what was wrong for me. I encountered a desync when trying to play the submission on my end, right around when the game is supposed to walk out of town to witness Slymy being struck by lightning. It turns out there was a PSX BIOS mismatch that seems to be the root cause. The problem is that this submission uses the wrong PSX BIOS for its production.

Moon should be using an NTSC-J BIOS as it's a Japan only PSX game.

Thank you for your reply. I wasn't familiar with BIOS, so please give me some time to investigate. If there is an issue, I would like to fix it and resubmit. Thank you in advance for your help.

I have also confirmed that the random numbers differ depending on the BIOS used. I apologize for the mistake and would like to make a correction in this part and resubmit. Just to confirm, is it okay to use the following BIOS? (This is the top BIOS displayed in Firmware Info in BizHawk 2.8.)
Hash: sha1:B05DEF971D8EC59F346F2D9AC21FB742E3EB6917
Standard Filename: PSX_3.0(J).bin
Descriptuion: PSX BIOS (Version 3.0 09/09/96 J)
Info Used on SCPH-5500 [g]. This is for Rev C hardware [w]. Recommended for (J) [f].

ah! I'm sorry, it was written properly in the Summary... I overlooked it. Thank you for your advice. Also, please tell me what to do next. (Should I delete New and upload it to Userfile?) I'm not sure about the error...

Since you already submitted the new run, just cancel this one.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.
