16-minute 16-star playthrough of the first and one of the most versatile, action oriented 3-D games for the N64.
This tool-assisted movie is over a minute faster than the original test run, and takes many shortcuts favorable over the original ones. Most of the saved time is an accumulation of bits and pieces of optimization through Mario's movement and straighter paths to whatever destination.
What was very fortunate was that I was able to record with an analog stick, thus making radial positioning much more precise and ultimately making many pathways faster.
Thanks to Micheal Fried, Weatherton, nitsuja, Atma, and GeminiSaint for the useful strategies.
Abuses glitches. Takes damage to save time.

Finally! I was beginning to wander if this wouldn't get published even thou' it's one of the most voted runs (and all of the votes are Yes!). But why isn't there a screenshot of the run?

Well it has a star now :) Very satisfying run but I ceratinly hope this is not the last we'll see of SM64.

I've finally watched this and damn! it's awesome! Really great job Spezzafer! And now I really can't wait to see the 120-star run. This run was almost over before it started ;)

i'm not sure about whether it is really shorter, but i once saw a (not tool assisted) speedrun which got two stars much more quickly than e.g. spezzafer's 16th star. that other guy only needed maybe only 20 seconds for each of it. i don't know the name of the level....mario slides down a slope, and by jumping over the balustrade the "race" can be shortend dramatically. there is a catchy, whisteling background melody. i'm sure you checked all possibilities very thoroughly and i might be wrong, but it's just an idea ;) besides that, a very artistic and entertaining run!

Princess' Secret Slide is pretty quick, but don't forget that Mario is dropped in the main entryway when he exits the course. Going back in takes longer than other levels. Taking one star from the Secret Slide and another from some other course may involve unlocking a door. There is a test run in the Mario64 thread in the N64 Games section where Secret Slide is played.

I don't know... I did say "the" 16th star instead of "a" 16th star. That seems like I am refering to a particular star IMO. That it was the 16th star aquired in this run as opposed to say the 16th star in an alphabetical listing is another issue.

Watched the vid a couple days ago. It deserves a star; however, the person who programmed the video plugin should die a horrible death.

Of the ~4 video plugins I have, this is the one that simultaneously doesn't crash, supports capturing, and runs at a good speed and visual quality. There are a few minor quirks, but nothing that breaks gameplay or makes it unwatchable/unenjoyable.

Oh god. The very idea of this scares me. I've watched some people destroy this game live to the poinr that I was ready to throw up, and I couldn't imagine a 16-minute run... Which is why it's too bad the torrent won't point correctly >.<
YtterbiJum, on SMB3: I've tried 20+ times and it always desyncs there. Unless, of course, Genisto meant to die, use a star on the map screen, go in a pipe, and jump around till time runs out.

I'd like to see you program a better one and live. as for the run, I watched the test run and the published run side-by-side. It seems like you gained some time until the castle door, then lost that time again while reaching the first course. (Everything after that is difficult to compare) Long story short, I disagree with the star. The run is well done, but 3D games are a whole new playing field, and neither are the tools elaborate enough to produce perfect angled input, nor do we have other 3D TAS to compare it against. anyway, pretty well done, I know you spent a lot of time on route-planning. But the tools don't seem ready yet for perfection.

I've got to disagree with you there, Tub. I believe that this run is improvable. The odds of a run this long being frame perfect is pretty slim. Nevertheless, this is close enough to perfection that no one voted No or demonstrated a way that it could be improved. Furthermore, it was entertaining and surprising. It meets all of the criteria of being a star movie. If a movie can't get a star if it's still improvable, how could we ever award stars? It's also true that there is nothing to compare this run to yet, but it IS a Super Mario run and it is played better than any existing precedent. If future N64 movies show this movie up, the bar will be raised accordingly. Until that happens, why worry about it? To deny a movie a star because someone might make a better movie of a different game later, possibly, if we're lucky, seems a strange reason to deny it a star.

as far as i understand stars are for the best movies, aren't they? for me the most entertaining runs are best! while certain runs like e.g. rockman for NES approximate technical perfection, they are almost unwatchable (no offense intended). summed up i'd give spezaffer's run that star any time even if it is not perfect to the last frame.

Using that reasoning, pretty much every movie published so far on the site should get a star. Not that I want to say this movie shouldn't have gotten one - in fact, I haven't formed an opinion on that at all yet -, but "it's entertaining" and "it's a new record" are not reasons to give a movie a star - they're reasons why a movie should be published at all and not rejected.

That's because the game as such is not entertaining - and besides, the Donkey Kong movie is actually one of *my* most favourite movies on the site, so it's not as if noone likes it. :) One man's owl is another man's nightingale, as they say in these parts where I live. :) Stars are for movies that are exceptional even for this site, where all movies should be exceptional compared to "regular" play - or at least that's my opinion. And again, I don't want to say that this particular movie doesn't deserve one; I just want to point out that if you wanted to give every entertaining movie a star, you'd have to give one to pretty much every single movie that's been published here.

I kind of see the point about reserving the star until we see more from this game. To truely deserve the star I think the movie must incorporate the stationary Z + B move (swinging the foot around). This clearly should have been done in bowser 1 or 2 while waiting for the key to settle.

The star movies are recommended to newcomers to the site to watch. So, for a movie to have a star, it should be something that a first-time viewer is likely to appreciate, more importantly than it being frame-perfect. I think this movie certainly fits that requirement. It will probably be improved upon as many other star movies have, but it's not so imperfect that it was received negatively enough to give people the wrong idea about what sort of movies are recommended. Also, if it should be improved, then giving it a star gives people a bit more of an incentive to improve it, right?

But it sure is cool! And it made me smile when I saw it at a few places. I think one of them was to enter the Hazy Maze Cave after getting the star from Toad. Awesome!
