FODA, any chance you post some updates along the way? I'm totally hooked on this Mario 64 thing. Best of luck to you.

I seriously doubt this but I haven't tested it.
Anyway, in Mario Sunshine to GameCube there is a glitch that allows Mario to walk underwater. There is at some point logs in the water in the town. If Mario swims under those and then up through them (I guess) he glitches so he starts falling to the bottom of the ocean (town). Now he can walk underwater! Actually, I haven't tried this myself but I read it at gamefaqs in a few walkthroughs there so I'm pretty sure it works in Mario Sunshine.
My thought though was if this was reproducable in some way in Mario 64. If so this could perhaps be used in Hazy Maze Cave to walk underwater by using the creature in the cavern with the lake. This would solve the problem with reentering the level and the metal hat could be taken lastly then. But I seriously doubt this though =/ It could be worth a few tries perhaps?

ok its not possible to do the jumping-backwards-to-skip-the-door-glitch unless there's a big ladder going UP in front of it. that's because the ladder makes mario go at an extraordinary speed, and due to collision checks in gradius style, mario skips right through the door (my guess). so, i dont think it's possible to enter joly roger bay first. What i did was file copy spezzafer's first star and continue from there (just this test run, i plan to try to improve his first star later). Then i got the slide's 2 stars (its not only 1). And THEN i got into JRB and got it's 7 stars +1 of secret aquarium. Then i got the red cap star and switch. So now i have 12 stars and am going to cool-cool mountain.
the run looks like someone playing normally because it actually is, i just used savestates to not mess up too much, but in the case of the 100 coins i messed up with route, but i guess its ok. 14 minutes so far.
edit: hmmmm to minimize walking inside the main hall, i'll take whomp's fortress before cool-cool mountain.
I could have sworn there was a video of someone going into JRB using that trick. Somebody tell me if I've been smoking meth.

So. Someone is actually planning a 70-120 star run for this game now I take it?
I can get at least 70 stars, but I don't think my skill in the game would be very, well...Satisfactory.
Not to mention my controller has gone on the fritz, so I can hardly play with an emulator anymore.. -Sigh.-
I'll need to get a brand new one...Again...
I can't believe there's finally an N64 emulator with re-recording now, didn't think it was too far off.
Well, anyway. Good luck!
You mean staircase, not ladder, right? A ladder is very different. Anyway, did you watch the video of entering jolly roger bay? He uses the staircase to go through the door, it's a very small staircase but if you position yourself at exactly the right angle you can backwards jump on it to just barely gain pass-through-door speed. I think it also requires pushing away from the door at exactly the right angle perpendicular to the door and in the corner of it, while skidding backwards at high speed from the staircase jumps. I don't think all the extra long-jumping he did against the door was necessary, from what I know of the physics of this glitch in other parts of the castle. (There is one other door set up the same way as JRB, but that's Bob-omb's Battlefield which is already unlocked.)
BTW, I think the staircase jumping on the 2 big staircases that's done in the 16-star run can also save time in the 120-star run even if you already have enough stars to pass through the doors/staircase normally. I'm not sure, but it might even save time to do it multiple times (because it moves you very fast and can be used to "warp" to many other parts of the castle after the 2nd key door).
Keep in mind that the main staircase going up to the 2nd key door is not really a staircase, so it can't be used for any glitches. (It's really a slope with staircase graphics, which won't do.)

hummm never heard about that one :S
and i watched the video but it didn't look too logical to me, has anyone tested it?
and how do you do the staircase trick, i do the backwards jumping but mario doesn't seem to "grab" the staircase in order to gain speed, he simply jumps up..
nevermind i got it. it seems that at least some speed in the opposite direction when starting the longjump is required.
Given what's known about the staircase glitch to go through the other doors, it makes sense. Especially because of something else that isn't obvious from seeing those glitches done, which is that when Mario is moving at a very high speed and hits a wall, he will keep moving at that high speed as long as you keep pressing the control stick in any direction.
I tested going through that door briefly, it was only with a keyboard so I couldn't get the angles good enough to go through, but I did manage to do almost as many backward jumps up that staircase as he did in the video.

ok i was watching the 120 star and i want to clear something up:
getting the metal cap star DOES NOT send you to the waterfall. it sends you back to the hazy maze cave entrance in the castle just like any star from HMC itself as if the metal cap were an 8th star from that level, so there's no problem with doing all of HMC at once! that's good news.
You only get sent out through the waterfall if you get carried out with the current in the Metal Cap star room.

Wally: "Really?"
Guybrush: "No. I 'm lying."
Wally: "In that case, I don't want one!"
Currently working on:
Nothing at the moment.
This is mainly to do with the 16 star run, but is it possible to get into the caged star in Whomp's Fortress via the rotating green platforms, using a triple jump wall kick, plus a jump kick (to propel yourself to the edge).
It might be considerably faster than using the cannon. Getting on the rotating platform is quite easy, you just do a triple jump wall kick right before the piranha plant. You'd reach the rotating green platform, at the same time compared to reaching the cannon, or perhaps slightly slower. raising the cannon takes a long time (not talking to the bomb-omb, since you'd still have to do that for the other star, so I'm not factoring that in).
If it is possible to reach the cage star from the green platforms (I've gotten very close, but I can't master that last jump kick, and my computer is lagging, so slowing the video down doesn't help too much), it will make for a cooler looking video (IMO), and perhaps be quicker?
I could check, but I thought that getting the star just left you where you were (Castle Secret Star), and swimming out took you outside the castle. Except what happens when you die in the Metal Cap course?
Oh yeah, and has anyone thought of more ways to abuse the "exit course from pause screen" option to save time?
put yourself in my rocketpack if that poochie is one outrageous dude
DK64M: I think both ways were approximately the same time when LeCoureur tried it so he went with the cannon since it looked cooler and he'd already used the triple-jump wallkick turnaround longjump twice for the main upper platform stars.

I suppose you should search for SM64 tricks then. It's been a while since there last was activity in the game, so I can't remember any sites from head. I do have quite some videos though, so you could contact me for those if you want. Ask other people for knowledge on the game, Curtis Bright and Myles Bukrim have some great strategies for their fast times. such as doing the red coins in DDD (without using the poles)(which would also be the 100 coin star). I have about every video I could find on SM64, fast times, tricks, glitches, what else.

that glitch is insanely hard to pull off... especially with using a gamepad, "pause" and "frame advance" hotkeys on the keyboard, and not knowing exactly how to activate it. is that guy the only person who did it? is he a serious person (the kind that wouldn't edit a video)? i'm investing a lot of time trying to make this glitch work but still no success.
Foda: How close have you gotten so far to getting it to work? (The thing that comes closest to looking like what he did in the video even if it didn't work to get through the door.)
Inzult: Those coin glitches all look really slow and tedious to do, compared to just grabbing 100 coins normally.

i managed to use the whole staircase in the backwards jumping trick for maximum added speed, but maybe the angle wasn't right because he mario still couldn't get in the door.
