Super Mario Bros. is an old game that was released in 1985 on NES. Super Mario Bros. is a pretty easy game to do a tool-assisted speedrun and one of my favorite games. This movie has a lot of glitch everywhere in the game like the "flag-pole glitch", the "wrong warp" and so on.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: FCEUX 2.2.3
  • Beat the game without killing any enemy
  • Fast acceleration to save time

Comments

In this movie, I learned by watching some other movies to have a result that I do not dislike. I decided to do a speedrun of this category because other categories like any%, warpless and so on, are already well advanced and I do not have enough experience with this game and emulators.

Stage by stage comments

1-1 World 1

Fast acceleration at the beginning, use a pipe to get to another part of the level and flag-pole glitch at the end.

1-2 World 1

Fast acceleration after falling, i stopped a little to avoid crushing the goomba and warping to the world 4 without using wall clip glitch.

4-1 World 4

Fast acceleration at the beginning, and walking through the level. No flag pole glitch, because I took an hour to try without success.

4-2 World 4

Fast acceleration at the beginning after falling, using a wall clip glitch to go faster to the "warping zone". Using the pipe to go to the warping zone and (again) warping to the world 8.

8-1 World 8

Fast acceleration at the beginning and running through the long level while avoiding killing an enemy. No fpg again cause : seem to the 4-1.

8-2 World 8

Fast acceleration at the beginning, running through the level to get to the flag. I stopped a little bit to get the timer at 342 if i remember.

8-3 World 8

Fast acceleration at the beginning again, second level filled with bill ball. No flag pole glitch but i stopped a little bit to have a non-equivalent timer at 3 or 6.

8-4 World 8

Fast acceleration at the beggining again and again, i used pipes in the level to make me faster at the end of the level. I use the "wrong warp glitch" to go to the aquarium part and get to the end of the level.

Other comments

What would the audience want to see? More animated gameplay, more impressive to see, because in my movie, I do very little manipulation directly in the game without glitch.
I could improve the accelerations at the beginning of the levels and the exit of the pipes, to do more "flag pole glitch" which would allow me to save more time and glitches that I could do more quickly.

Maru: Judging.
Maru: This is the third SMB1 submission of yours in a short time period. Keep in mind that the branches you are opting to TAS and submit here are not eligible for Vault (the tier focused on speed records). Only fastest and full completion TASes are allowed for the Vault tier.
Since you are picking branches that are not eligible for Vault, they must receive good feedback and have compelling differences from already existing branches. Unfortunately, the branch you have chosen is not receiving good feedback, and I will explain why. If you look at some of the more unusual goal choices that we have accepted for SMB1, including all items and maximum coins, you'll see that the gameplay is very clearly changed in almost every single level of the game compared to a typical speedrun. Those gameplay changes compared to the published warps or warpless TASes provide major entertainment merits for having those branches published. Not only is it very different, but a lot of people found it entertaining!
A pacifist category of SMB1 does not offer the same entertainment merits as the branches I have mentioned previously. With this game, there are few entertainment merits for avoiding enemies and consequently losing time in some levels.
Now, in terms of optimization, it is not up to our site standard. None of the TASes that you have submitted so far are up to site standard in terms of optimization. Consider this as a warning. If you submit another TAS that is not up to standard in optimization (which includes not beating known records, having clear mistakes, etc.), your submission privileges will be revoked until you can prove that you are able to submit a high quality movie.
Canceling.

I don't personally feel a pacifist version adds much.

It's 17.46 seconds slower than this TAS, how unoptimable this submitted TAS it is! Link to video Voting No for Bad goal choice and extreme unoptimal.
Cuphead TASes desyncs unfortunately.

I don't have a ROM that works with this movie, but if what FilipeTales says is true about there existing a faster TAS already (and I don't doubt them), then I would vote no.

Arbitrary goal choice is one bad thing about the run. But unoptimized? That just makes it worse. No vote.
Yaaay, I'm an active player now! :D (as of 11/9/2024) Thanks to TASVideos for the support, they're awesome.
I'm Asumeh, semi-expert SMB1 TASer. :) Check out some of the TASes I don't submit/upload to TASVideos on my YouTube channel, if you'd like. In progress: - Extra Mario Bros. (redo) (with HappyLee and w7n) - I'm currently assisting with finding improvements before the boss. On hold; we're currently struggling to confirm that we have the fastest route. Some debugging may also help with finding glitch exits, but neither of us are experts in that field. - Record my older TASes (excluding any obsolete TASes) and upload to YouTube. - Pretty busy at the moment... Check out my other links here. (Mostly WIP hehe)

It's asking if you "found the movie entertaining" not "should this movie be published". So. Did either of you find the category itself interesting at all, unique or something or are both of you too fixated on it being subotpimal? (Double on you Αsumeh referring to your post on "no glitches" as that comes off as the same reasoning as your No vote there which doesn't fall in line with how you should vote.) Cause if you're going to argue about it being arbitrary. Well, do I have a story for both of you involving Super Metroid and Chrono Trigger.

To be honest, I almost feel like there should be a rule that no one can submit a TAS of Super Mario Bros for the NES to be published on TASVideos unless either A) They've already had a SMB1 TAS published on the site at some point or... B) They have at least 100 player points. I could see some people saying that it's completely arbitrary and pointless to automatically delete submissions for one particular game for inexperienced players, but considering the massive number of submitted SMB1 runs by new TASers and the fact that virtually all of these TASes have been suboptimal and rejected, it wouldn't be the craziest idea in the world... ...Anyways, back to the discussion of this movie in particular. If I watched it, I probably would have voted no on entertainment, because this is intrinsically a pretty boring goal choice which is essentially a less interesting and less optimized version of the any% TAS of the game. However, I'm too lazy to download an SMB1 ROM and to play the movie file back in it, so I'm abstaining from voting until someone puts up a temporary encode.
