How does this videoproject going? Finished soon? :-)
Well, I actually finished a rough draft a few days ago. However, there seems to be some legal issues using the song, so working on it any further would be pointless, sorry. I'm not a legal expert, so I can't debate whether it is ok to use it in the video or not. I guess now, the only options for making the trailer is to get permission to use the song or to change the song, which will probably end up with the same problem. If anyone wants to take over trying to come up with a trailer, feel free.

Can we have just the video you put together, and have some of us brainstorm for a song?

Warp suggested using Antonio Vivaldi's Summer- Presto song. I liked the idea. He apparently couldn't find this thread again to come here to say it...

Just ignore the legal issues and see if you get in trouble. That's much more fun.

So why don't you put a lot of illegal stuff on your website advertise it, and let us know how it goes.

Is it illegal to use a song if you credit it in the video?? Or what about uploading the video without music...hm, maybe that would have been a bit boring... Then what about making the music for it (maybe a bit hard?)

How about just using the music from whatever game is currently being shown. It's ok to use that music in the speed run videos (at least I think it is), so why not the video you're working on?

The clips are around 5-10 seconds long. Changing the music and the type of music that fast would make it sound pretty ugly. That's why in the video I made, I removed the sound from each clip first. Also, if that's how it works, why not put a quick clip of ddr gameplay at the beginning so we can use the song in the video.

Why is it ok to use that song? Even though the original composer is long dead, isn't the song played and recorded by another artist? Wouldn't we have to get permission from him before using it? Plus, I'd rather use Storm by Vanessa Mae, which is a redone version of Summer.

If you for example make your own midi version of a copyrighted song and publish it on the internet you will be violating the copyright laws of most countries. However, those classical songs are not copyrighted anymore and anyone can make their own versions of them and publish them freely. That's why it's technically illegal to use a song from a videogame (even if you make the midi yourself) but not from a 100+ years old classical piece.

Just make a MIDI out of a few random notes and call that your "legitimate" song.

Question is, if they make their own version and publish it, am I allowed to use their version in the video? If so, would that mean that I could use any song, played and recorded by any artist, as long as the original piece they are playing is no longer copyrighted? Let's say You played and recorded Vivaldi's Summer. Would I be able to use your recording in the video without your permission?

I can try whipping up a trailer. Will check it out tonight, and I think I know the perfect song. Just hope I can get the rights to use it :P

No. The recordings themselves are copyrighted, too. That being said, a piece like The Four Seasons has hundreds of recordings out there and if someone wanted to sue you they would have to prove that you used their recording. Not so easy.

I wouldn't mind seeing Solomons Key, Level 13, where he makes block while jumping straight up, and stands between the dragon and the flame once or twice.

So what's the story with this?

Well, there seems to be problems using any song in the video, so I don't know what to do from here. I've also been pretty busy lately, so even if I knew what to do, I wouldn't have as much time to work on it as before. If anyone has any ideas, or wants to give this a try, please go right ahead. If not, then I guess there won't be any trailer.

I don't see what the major issue with a song is :) I'd say use it, like people do in anime music videos, and if it's ever an issue, at that point simply remove the video.

.... So are we to understand that the video is made... but the audio track (overlay) for additional entertainment is not decided-upon yet?? Why not just show the AVI as is with video footage and see how it runs, then decide on a song?? You know you could also have an original recording made for it.... A whie ago, a site i frequent had some guy do "theme songs"... they were hilarious.

I could make up some songs, but I have no idea where I would get people to perform them. I'm not even sure I could write down the songs properly for every instrument.

Well, if you can't get any of your own music, you could always just rip songs out of the games that seem fitting. Like the piano song from Super Mario World, or the song from Ring Man's level in Mega Man 4. Just whatever sounds crazy and speedy.

Fair use laws simply state that any song that is copyrighted can be used in a movie if you make sure that it says the band name and song, and possibly the album. Therefore, you're free to use any song that is copyrighted by a legal entity (record company/solo artist). I can't wait to see this, if it is still in the works.
