Hey everyone! This is my first tool-assisted speedrun. It is 15:27 long and has 5904 rerecords. Most of it was played at 16% speed. Some of the rerecords are from learning how this worked, some are from mistakes, but most are from optimization and various experimentation.
Kid Chameleon has some features which makes it interesting for speed running - there are a lot of paths to take, and helmets to chose from, and what helmet you choose earlier can greatly influence how you handle the next level, you can gain speed by jumping on enemies and falling off ledges and so on.
I use the warp in Under Skull Mountain 1, instead of the one in Blue Lake Woods 2. This is since the one in BLW2 relies on a secret button combination rather than a game element, as in getting 1,000,000 points in USM1.
This movie focuses on game timeunits, mainly because it would be silly to try to get hurt, pick up a diamond in every level and slowing down to not get the bonuses at the end of the level. Time units are as follows:
- Blue Lake Woods 1: 17
- Blue Lake Woods 2: 15
- Highwater Pass 1: 40
- Highwater Pass 2: 19
- Elsewhere: 13
- Under Skull Mountain 1: 24
- Woods of Despair 1: 16
- Woods of Despair 2: 28
- Valley of Life: 7
- Black Pit: 21
- Lion Hills: 16
- Wind Castle 1: 2 (!)
- Wind Castle 2: 8
- Blizzard Mountain: 19
- Caves of Ice: 33
- Nightmare Peaks 1: 17
- Nightmare Peaks 2: 6
- Bagel Brothers: 40
- Diamond Edge: 40
- Hills Have Eyes: 21
- Secrets in the Rocks: 25
- Ice God´s Vengeance: 39
- Beneath Twisted Hills: 40
- Alien Isle: 35
- The Land Below: 26
- The Final Marathon: 42
- Plethora: 37
Total: 10:36 time units.
Edit: Mandatory information
- Uses warps
- Only necessary items
- Takes damage to save time
Many thanks go to
nifboy and his complete run which I gained a lot of ideas from, and without which I probably would have accepted a sloppy time on Alien Isle and some other levels; to xou, who hosted the preliminary run so everybody could see; and to my brothers who helped me map out the levels.
Enjoy!
Bisqwit: I think the skeleton of this movie is good enough, and
there are nice tricks that are used to gain speed (such as bouncing
from enemies).
However, I think it's not well-finished enough. I don't know how
many seconds can I estimate it can be improved, but there were
some jumps that could have been done better. I didn't record an AVI
so it'd be difficult for me to point out the exact positions, but
I recommend you go at it and look carefully and improve it then.
I have been seeing more and more of these myself as time went by.
Also I now know (just found out today actually) of one more shortcut
I could have done. I would redo it, as I have plenty of spare time now,
but I have a laptop that only takes two keypresses at a time. :(
If you have the time, could you give me some pointers as to
where you think it can be improved?
Cancelling this for now then...
