It's the old "Hit Robotnik an extra time as he's dying to loop his hit counter to 255 trick" most likely. =P

Ouzo, don't say that you have also been contaminated by this games curse? What the heck is going on with this game? Seriously, without making jokes or anything, someone has put a curse or black magic spell on this run..

Sorry, ever since Gens has had 3 player support implemented, I have been working on the Lost Vikings again (I had been anticipating that much more than a run of this game). This game will be on my to-do list.

Bah. First the SoR3 run canceled and now this. Anyway, I'll be sure to check in on the Vikings, but I think you have it down pretty solid by now.

So, reading through, has an entertaining speed run for this game concluded?

After seeing the Knux runs for this game, I was kinda wondering if there was any chance of a normal run of this game being continued. The Knux runs are good and all, but Im sure the Sonic run could be so much more entertaining.

its obvious Xebra has abandoned this run but i made a couple of vids here is star light zone act 1 being complete in 24 seconds this is probably a perfect time if it isnt perfect the most you could improve on this would be by 5 frames at the most Star Light Zone Act 1 here is my second vid of Scrap Brain Zone Act 3 being completed in 19 seconds there may be room for improvement in this one and as an added bonus this vid also has Final Zone being completed in 1:13 Scrap Brain Zone Act 3

My strong guess is that this run will probably be done around 2007. Im sure some others will until then give this run a try but knowing how many people have abandoned this run, my guessing seem pretty valid.

xebra has bet his honour, half his nose and one leg on that this run will be done in two years. So yeah. 2007 sounds about right. That is, unless we can trick/lure/force/beckon/petition/bicker/whine Ouzo into doing it. :D

I started messing around with recording in Gens for this game. I record Green Hill 1 (and got a laughable :28) but when I went to play it back, it desynced shortly into the level. I made another and improved to :25, but when playing back, it desynced again, but not until the midpost of the level. This leads me to believe I'm doing something that is bad for this emulator. I'm recording from start, and obviously loading savestates pretty frequently, and using frame advance at times and 50% play at times (to see if a jump made it, or whatever). I'm also using GENS Test version 9f. Anything strange I should know about this emulator? I read on some of the genesis submissions that they used Gens Test version 10. Does this exist, and if so, where can I get it? Maybe it will fix these desyncs.

The only anti-desync measure I know of for Gens in checking your controllers to make sure that they're 3 button.

All of my vids were made with 8 or 9 or 9b or something. I never had desynchronization problems unless I accidentally loaded a savestate past the current point I'd reached in the game.

I put controller 2 at 3-button (not sure why it wasn't that) and made a third try at GH1 and it did not desync when playing back. Hooray! I'll probably try a few more times to make sure it was this, but I'm guessing it was. Thanks guys.

Good luck with this. We'll all be proud if you're able to break this game's curse.

JXQ: Another thing it could be, is that Snes9x has bulletproof rerecording. Even if you load savestates out of order, the movie doesn't desynchronize. Gens does not have this feature, so you have to keep track of which savestate is most recent and in which order to load them.

Hmmm...I'm not familiar with this procedure. Say I'm at the top of a hill, and there are two different ideas to do the next part of the level. I save state 1, and then I try one idea, using states 2 and 3 to optimize it. Now I want to try the other idea to see which is better. Normally I'd just load state 1, and then optimize that idea. Loading state 1 is "out of order" I think...so what would be done in this case? Loading state 3, then 2, then 1?

In that case, you can go back to state 1, but not to 2 and 3 once you've started something else. An example then: You have state 1 from where you want to try out different methods. You use state 2 and 3 to optimize the first method A. (*) Then you go back to state 1, and try the other method B with states 5 and 6. Now if method B with states 5-6 is the best, no worries. Just keep on recording. If method A was the best, you can NOT simply load states 2-3 to resume from there, that will give you a guaranteed desynch. Either you 1) Load state 1 and redo method A (if it's not very long), or 2) You backed up your movie where the (*) was, resume recording in THAT movie with states 2-3. Hope that made everything clear. This is because Snes9x automatically saves a backup of the movie in the state file. In Gens (and Famtasia and maybe FCEU, I'm not sure) you have to do this manually.
