Thank you! I watched the movie on Mupen and it looks great! Now here is a tip that might come in handy to cut a few frames. If you are below a star and jump to grab it, press Z just before touching it. Doing so will cause Mario to get the star, stop all upward movement, and drop immediately to the ground at butt-stomp speed, except he will not do the small mid-air flip he does before butt-stomping. Hopefully this helps.

new movie (edit: fixed the link) after Bowser 1 it's only 15.37 seconds faster which isn't much, but consider the longer paths between painting worlds and doors taken in this run which probably took away a little time GeminiSaint: thanks I'll keep that in mind later

Your new run is definitely much more impressive so far spezzafer (not that your old one didn't make me go 'wtf?' multiple times), keep up the good work :)

Great run! :). Quick question, is it faster to use the cannon to get the star at the top of Whomp's fortress? I mean, you have to open the cannon, but you have to do that anyways for the shoot into the wall star. Raisng the cannon does take a while, though...

I don't think you're allowed to open the cannon in that stage until you completed that goal.

if you're meaning the top of the tower star, you can't raise the cannon until you've gotten that star, but if you could it'd probably be faster. edit - nrg beat me to the point.

Ok, should have realized :). What about skipping the cannon completely, and getting that caged star by triple jumping (I can't seem to get in the cage, but I can get onto the green platform right next to the cage, but I'm sure it's possible?) Then get one more quick star in Cool Cool mountain, JRB, Whomp's Fortress or Bomb-omb battlefield? In the 16 star run, route is of utmost importance. We can follow the speedrun route, or spend more time trying to do stars that take a while, in a shorter amount of time, due to the fact that we have an emulator.

The TAS looks great so far! By the way, I just realized that you may not have been taking the fastest route in the basement in your test run. When you make your way from the key door to LLL, instead of going straight, right, door, right, left, straight. Try going left and long-jumping up that slick incline (with the blue glass above it), go through that door, quick left, door, straight/right and then LLL. Just a quick couple runs with my stop watch showed the second way to be faster, I'll investigate further though. Further testing shows the following results (not perfected, pretty good): My way: 11.3 seconds Normal: 10.4 seconds It may be worth taking a look at though, I didn't really perfect the alternate way and it's a little tricky. Here is a movie of the alternate way, it has a couple little tricks in it: http://www.people.virginia.edu/~avw6s/random/Mario64_AlternateBasement.zip Here is a faster version (doesn't have turn trick, not sure if the trick is faster, comments welcome) http://www.people.virginia.edu/~avw6s/random/AlternateBasement4.wmv

Sorry for the double post but I don't want this to get lost in my previous post. Just for reference, Curtis Bright hosts an ongoing competition for the fastest single start times. You can see the times and some videos here: http://www.student.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~cbright/sm64/fasteststartimes.html This may help when selecting stars (certainly for the inevitable 70 star run)

For blast away the wall, when you jump from the moving platform to the star, can you do a dive there?

Wow, You allways seem to amaze me! ;) I really liked the second star in CCM (the Wall Kick Will Do or something like that). Also the Bowser level was even better than before, and I was already really stunned in the first version of it. I think you should give a try to Weatherton's idea.

It may prove to be worth. You could also try to go to Hazy Maze Cave this way and from there to Lethal Lava Land (or can you get the star from the mushroomguy then, or do you need more stars for that?) Anyways, keep up the good work. I can't wait to see this as a full run.
Which run should I encode next? :)

I think I remember someone saying you need 12 stars to get the star from Toad, though you might want to test that out to make sure. Btw, does anyone have a vid of the best dire dire docks strat? I don't think any of the 16 star runs have used it.

What is the fastest star in Dire Dire Docks? I think someone should test how fast you can get the Chests In The Current star. It's the one where you need to open up those chests in the starting place.

I think you need to get the Board Bowser's Sub star for the entrance to the Bowser level to appear, but someone should test that since I'm not sure. Edit: Btw the fastest star in DDD is The Manta Ray's Reward. Edit 2: Btw Spezzafer, do you know how much time it saved you to go to CCM instead of the secret slide? If it was pretty close then you should try the secret slide again since each of those stars can be done a second faster than in the other vid you made.

Once you're inside, you can easily get out without enough stars by using pause->exit from inside the level to get to the main castle area.
Of course! Why didn't I think of that? But, if not using this start-trick, is it possible anyway? Since that particular stair leans downwards (in the room with the first water world which I can't remember the name of), would it still give Mario enough speed to make it through?

Has someone tried to get through the second keydoor (which leads to staircase going up) with the longjump trick. Since the is staircase right before the door it could be possible, but I heard somewhere that it couldn't be done because you need to "activate" the place byt killing the second Bowser. I was just wandering you you could after all go through that door. And if you could, you'd be able to make 0 star run ;)

I think there's a zone transition there. There's nothing actually behind the door but a small black room. You probably have to trigger the door itself to advance.

DeHackEd is correct -- Any talk of completing the game with under 16 stars is extremely unlikely because you need 16 stars to open the Bowser 2 level and you need the Bowser 2 key to trigger that level load. Maybe you could glitch those somehow, but I really doubt it.

here are the frame times: SS1: 6960 - 8968 (2008) {from 1-star door} -1 second: 1948 SS2: 21729 - 23691 (1962) {from exiting WF door} -1 second: 1902 Lil' Penguin Lost: 18730 - 20894 (2164) {from 3-star door) Wall Kicks Will Work: 21503 - 22540 (1036) {from front of painting world} the frame times in () are the ones to pay attention to...you'll see how remarkably faster the Wall Kicks star in CCM is than either SS star, and since we want to avoid opening as many star doors as possible (to avoid the little cut scene) it's best just to couple it with the second fastest CCM star also, it's actually now 18 seconds faster than the test run to the defeat of Bowser 1, so I somehow miscalculated/recorded the data if that route to the lava/desert world room is faster (and it looks to be) then I'll keep it in store

Do you think sub-16 is a realistic goal? That would be pretty cool, less than 1 minute per star.

As far as finishing with less than 16 stars goes, I could see it being possible if you find a way to get through the star doors before each Bowser level, since the keys will both be required. It been shown that with the backwards long jump trick, you can turn slightly and start heading in a new direction. (The example I saw went up the infinite stairway, then quickly turned and reached all the way to the clock.) So, if you can find a way to build enough speed on the smaller staircases, a run with less than 16 stars just might be possible.

Good luck getting the Bowser 2 key without getting 16 stars, the methods often mentioned are misinformed. The true method would involve glitching into the Bowser2 level before making it appear (it comes up from the ground) -- it's much less likely to happen than ppl think.

As Maza mentioned, the path would actually make going to Hazy Maze Cave first a smarter option than LLL. Since you come out right next to the HMC door, that would surely make the path better, I think. (the one I demonstrated in this video: http://www.people.virginia.edu/~avw6s/random/AlternateBasement4.wmv).
