As I confessed in my apology for how I mishandled certain aspects of AGDQ 2017, I did an abysmal job of properly supporting the rest of the members on the TASBot team in certain areas that led to dissatisfaction and ultimately led to some discontinuing further work on GDQ events. I made serious mistakes in areas including attribution, commentary, and general time management that resulted in hurt feelings that I was honestly oblivious to at the time. When I finally understood the depth of the problem I was immediately emotionally impacted and remorseful (I even started going to counseling for the first time in my life last week). I would like to again take an opportunity to apologize to those who felt slighted either through lack of attribution or due to my time management failures at the event itself, and I would like to start taking steps to move forward. For my part, I do not plan to lead a major GDQ event any time soon - specifically, I do not intend to organize a major effort for AGDQ 2018, although I may provide analysis in-between runs at SGDQ 2017. In addition to needing time to re-assess how I would lead these types of efforts in the future, one of my primary reasons for this is I need to take some time to re-focus on my wife and kids. They did not get the priority I should have given them over the last three years and I'm re-learning how to put their needs first. Having said all of that, I have at least one major commitment that was per-arranged prior to AGDQ 2017 - namely, I had committed to being a keynote speaker at Thotcon in May 2017 delivering much the same presentation that I gave at GeekPwn. That talk will not involve a major development cycle so I am willing to keep that commitment as it will not be anything near the burden that past GDQ events have been on my family. Another opportunity recently came up that is in the same class of required work - namely, I've been asked if I would consider being part of the March 17-19 Californithon charity speedrun marathon benefiting Direct Relief. The event is less than two hours from where I live and thus would constitute a day trip that I could likely handle without negatively impacting my family. I have not yet committed to being a part of Californithon but I would likely show [3243] N64 Mario Kart 64 by Weatherton in 20:33.32 with pre-rehearsed commentary and full attribution (minimizing my name and ensuring the authors are given full credit). I would possibly also show something we were unable to show at AGDQ 2017 but had otherwise prepared, again with full attribution; it would involve the same payload but with different content and thus would stray into demoscene territory somewhat. I would like to seek counsel here. How do you (yes, you, reader of this post) feel I should proceed? Should I not go to Californithon at all to allow all of us including myself more time to process and recover? Should I take the opportunity to fix the "you only show demoscene content" complaints by showing just Weatherton's run (or a similar "traditional TAS"), thus sticking to our roots but not taking an opportunity to highlight the work of other members of the site? Should I show Weatherton's run and also the previously unseen run via the AGDQ 2017 payload method to cover the most broad range of content I have readily available and provide more time for proper attribution including a full credit roll? I am at an admittedly fragile place - I really, really want to take this fantastic opportunity that has presented itself to attempt to right the wrongs of attribution I erred in but I don't want to cause further damage. I have until the end of the day on the 31st (i.e. about 24 hours) to make a decision on whether to attend at all and I have a week or two more to decide what to show if I commit to going. I greatly appreciate any feedback you have on a "going forward" perspective (if you have feedback on AGDQ 2017 itself, please use that feedback thread instead). Thank you in advance for the support! The first people you should be asking permission from should be your family. If assassyknitter and your sproglets are okay with you taking the time to attend Californithon, then you should consider it. You are still the site's ambassador, and you are clearly working to be a better one - whether you actually do attend or not, whatever you choose to present, you are our forward-facing voice to the outside world.

This, first and foremost. Given all you've done for the site in terms of PR and exposure and putting yourself out there for us, there isn't a single person here who would judge you for wanting a break, so your family's thoughts should always come before ours. If you do decide to attend, I could possibly help out with commentary if need be, though I don't know how much help I'd be apart from filling out the couch.

No, you shouldn't. Most importantly you need to get a break, as you already stated your family, who are priority, suffered from you being away from them most of the time. And as the site ambassador you should get more familiar with other aspects of TASing, you have a great knowlegde of console verification and total control, but you can get into other aspects as well to be able to talk about TAS stuff more competently. You could try to make a TAS of a somewhat hard NES platformer for that, unfamiliar challenges usually increase skill and abstraction by a lot. And you don't have to hurry, since there's no time limit and your family wouldn't be hurt from you being away.

Heh - I definitely need a break from the insanity that is GDQ prep but making a challenging TAS will most definitely take me far more hours than a single afternoon. :) I do appreciate your point of view, by the way. I have a history of being very experimental and I'm definitely willing to take on something "outside my comfort zone" on the TAS front at some point in the future but I don't feel called to do that right now. Both asassyknitter and I had a night to think it over and we're going to take one more night to think it over some more but Californicon looks like it will be an equal time commitment to what Bay Area ACM was (a 1.5 to 2 hour drive per direction plus however amount of time I spend there). Because it is a weekend my family may end up coming with depending on circumstances, mostly determined by timing on the schedule and being able to make it back home in time for bedtime for the kids. More tomorrow.

Being desperate to get something off your chest doesn't seem like good motivation to attend an enevt like this. If you can't go there excited to present TASbot and a cool TAS, and the only thing on your mind is righting past wrongs, I would probably suggest sitting this one out. I think we've all been there when you mucked something up and are anxious for a way to set things straight, but that anxiety can be a bit blinding (believe me I know from experience 8D). You've made it quite clear that your wife and kids need more of your attention, and if you do decide to attend this event you'll probably be distracted by it until the day comes. You've probably already put too much of your attention into this event just deciding whether to go or not. It will be much easier to focus by staying home (and there's probably a hundred other day trips they'd rather be on then that one anyway.)

If I'm being completely honest, I don't understand why so much drama over this. So you didn't think of mentioning the authors of some of the runs and tricks during the TAS block. Well, it happens. It's a huge amount of work, and it probably is extremely hectic during the last weeks and especially days. Forgetting or not thinking of every single detail is understandable. Mentioning author names would have been nice, but hardly something catastrophic if forgotten. Frankly, if somebody is honestly upset about not having been mentioned during the live commentary, even though the lapse is totally understandable, I think that's quite petty. (I don't know anybody is really that upset about it. I'm just saying that if.) It's not like some horrible crime happened. But maybe I'm just not understanding the situation. Just feels completely blown out of proportions.

I do appreciate the feedback in this thread - it helped me solidify in my head what I was already thinking, that I didn't want to yet again take a trip away from my family if there wasn't a really good reason for it. On that note, I had a conversation with my wife and kids tonight (read: we had one of those "Family meetings"). I talked to the kids about the opportunity to bring TASBot to an event again and my daughter kept saying "I wanna go, I wanna go!" and asked if she could hold TASBot. My son went at it with a different angle with "I want to go, but can we eat dinner out at a restaurant?" (heh, always an opportunist). My wife wanted to research the charity (Direct Relief) but was satisfied after she took a look. Our schedule doesn't have any conflicts for that weekend, so we opted to say yes. Family meeting adjourned, kids sent to bed and all that. I submitted an empty block of 40 minutes. I had a chat with the organizers about ways to properly highlight traditional TAS content, how to explain what a TAS is, and how to properly credit the authors of each run and the creators of each device and codebase we demonstrate. I don't want to squander the opportunity to create a video explaining TAS elements properly that can be shown later; while I know the viewing audience will be smaller than GDQ by several orders of magnitude I hope to be able to use a video recording of the event for future explanation. I'll transition the thread into content selection, and as I noted in the AGDQ 2017 feedback I will be doing work for this and all future events entirely in the open (although specific game discussion will probably happen more in #tasbot in IRC / http://chat.TASBot.net than here). I'm restricting content to only things we already know work to keep the pre-event workload to a minimum. Thanks again to those who provided their feedback!

Honestly, that comes with the territory of being the "face" of an operation. If you're not going out of your way to take credit then I don't see a foul.

Some status updates - first, I'm happy to report that with a minimum of work (mostly involving sorting out a bad flash) I was able to get micro500's N64Bot up and running and I was able to use a US resynced file by rcombs to console-verify [3264] N64 Super Mario 64 "1 key" by Tyler Kehne, mkdasher, sonicpacker, snark, SilentSlayers, ToT, Plush, Gaehne D, Eru & sm64expert in 04:21.30 - here's a highlight video. The full VOD from last night also includes a verification of the 120 star run. I've made some major changes to how I'm doing things - for one thing, I'm in my livingroom, with my kids, doing something a lot less stressful than trying to organize a huge event in secret. It was fun, even for my kids. After the kids were in bed my wife and I enjoyed a relaxed session of Assassin's Creed II (and a bit of knitting) with the remaining viewers, and the worst thing I can say is we stayed up too late. This has been the least stressed (as in, I'm not stressed at all) that I've ever been prior to a marathon, for which I'm glad. I would like to get my hands on a copy of Mario Kart 64 if I can. I think it would be fun to show Weatherton's all cups run but I need a cartridge to borrow to test with. After I nail down which runs to show I'd like to get some commentary help. I know boct1584 has made an attempt at creating a brief explanation on what a TAS is and what the process is like which I may refine and adapt to be in my voice and modify for use in a live setting. For the 1-key run I need to fully understand the correct terminology or otherwise draft someone to help with commentary and practice it several times, probably publicly in realtime while streaming to make the time pressure a thing. The runs are never long enough on stage to say all that needs to be said. Finally, there are possibly a few minutes left in the schedule for "one more thing"; I'd prefer to stick to N64 content since that's the replay device I'm bringing, any thoughts on what to show? Thanks for the support, all!

That isn't and hasn't been the problem, and we who have made the events possible (from hardware to code to other planning) know this. We understand and accept that. However, some of us (I can speak for myself at least and others have said things about it) don't care much for how these opportunities had built up ego and led to selfishness. Not necessarily with intent, mind, but that's what it had become. Hopefully that won't be an issue anymore. I'm surprised it was considered as much of a problem at the most recent event but then again I was kept completely out of the loop so I wouldn't know. Wasn't the first time names were completely left out.

That document isn't really a explanation of a TAS, it's an explanation of how a TAS is created in the traditional way. Note that a TAS is an abstract thing, just like an algorithm isn't the implementation in a programming language. A TAS is more than just an input script made using an emulator with rerecording tools. There are many different ways to make a TAS, if you define one way as a TAS than that means all other ways of doing aren't creating TASes. There's also a lot more tools than frame-advance and savestates. Someone picking up TASing after watching the stream isn't very likey to make his TAS using the traditional way, but instead will use BizHawks TAStudio. Unlike in the old way frame-advance is almost eliminated in movie editors, while in the old way it's a necessarity. There's also botting, where sometimes an emulator isn't even used. The best way you could describe TASing is: "Making an input log using tools that eliminate the needs of human abilities (such as reaction time, etc.)". You then would describe different ways of making a TAS.

The idea with both of the documents in my thread is to give an overview of the concept, with the longer one being used if the presenter has 4-5 minutes and the shorter one for less than that. (My goal with the short one was to essentially make a 30-second "elevator pitch," if you're familiar with that concept.)

With the short amount of time you mentioned, I would recommend either of the F-Zero X or Super Smash Bros. runs. There's also Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and THPS2. It's a shame there aren't many N64 runs that could fit that timeframe, but you're welcome to play my Daikatana WIP; it might be hard to sync on console, but you have my permission anyway.

Quick update - after confirming the 1-key SM64 run I now need to work out MK64. I've spoken to Weatherton about how best to handle the run because the cups are all separate from one another and the submitted run does a reset. We'll need to segment each cup into its own movie file which is probably not too bad. The harder challenge is we'll need to convert the BizHawk file into a format that does not include lag frames. The Mupen format was nice for console verification because it didn't matter too much how many lag frames there really were on the console so long as the game always polled for input when it needed it the same way and we need to get either into that format or get into some similar format that we can adapt the script to read. Alyosha or rcombs might be willing to tackle this which would be really helpful, otherwise I'll scratch my head a bit over the weekend. My plan is to stream at http://twitch.tv/dwangoAC on Saturday morningish on my attempts. If anyone wants to lend a hand, please feel free to stop by #tasbot in IRC / http://chat.TASBot.net to discuss. Thanks!

Problem - I only have one N64 controller cable but Weatherton's run requires four of them. Alyosha was a huge help in creating a script to convert from BizHawk format to .m64 format which allowed us to at least test getting something sane to play back but the problem is more than one controller is used in the menuing system to make things go faster. I haven't yet investigated the rest of the run to see if additional controllers are used during races and I have no idea if a resync with one controller is possible. I'm considering MK64 a risk at this time. If I don't (or can't) do MK64, there are a number of interesting things I could show at Californithon. I'm curious if Lost Levels would work and there will be an FDS there but I'll have virtually no time to confirm that. We could possibly show one of the longer SMW runs that haven't been demonstrated yet. There are plenty of "easy" things, including showing the audio playback from GeekPwn. The only thing I'm (as always) a bit concerned about is commentary so I'll be working on that while streaming in the evenings this week. More updates soon!

Solution (maybe) - I was able to order four N64 extension cables and some 2-pin female headers with fast shipping and they should arrive on Tuesday. I have to be careful to not throw too much money at this (one of the major reasons for having to take a break is donations to cover our costs substantially dried up for AGDQ 2017) but if this works it'll be worth it. It's still very unclear if a resync of the existing run would even be possible and it's better to just do this the right way if at all possible. I remain a bit worried about commentary - if you read the earlier posts in this thread you'll see that one of my main goals was to correct the bad commentary from AGDQ 2017 (for my part, I was completely annoying with my commentary during Portal). My other goal was to ensure that working on this event would not take time away from my wife and kids. If you've been watching my recent Twitch streams you may have noticed a trend, namely I've been playing games with my family rather than working on TASBot stuff. All that to say I think I've prioritized the right things but I have to make sure I really think through what I'm going to say and how I'm going to say it this week. I'm the most confident about being able to describe the basics of making a TAS and I'm the least confident about exactly how some of the more technical glitches in SM64 are performed. Perhaps, just perhaps, the Californithon audience doesn't actually need a high level of detail and a simplistic "At this point Mario is going through a door he shouldn't be able to using a TAS-only technique" and make sure to point people at the submission notes for further details. Just know that I'm pondering this a bit right now. More updates probably on Tuesday but feel free to post any ideas or feedback. Thanks!

New problem: The connector ends showed up yesterday right on time but the extension cables are inexplicably delayed until next week, so we're back to getting a 1-controller version working. Having said that, #1533: Weatherton's N64 Mario Kart 64 "Any%" in 06:43.23 (yes, that one all the way back from 2007, nearly a decade ago) synced! I'm streaming right after I write this post (http://twitch.tv/dwangoAC) to see if I can do something like hex edit the start of a working movie in or use a version that Weatherton just sent me; we'll see how far I get tonight but there's renewed hope in this one.

With the help of Alyosha we now have all four Mario Kart 64 files and I'm testing the last two in just a few minutes at http://twitch.tv/dwangoAC (on my laptop that I'll be using during the marathon tomorrow). I've read through Weatherton's notes but I need additional review. I'm the most worried about what to say during SM64; there were concerns in the AGDQ 2017 thread that the commentary was not adequate or accurate and if someone who actually plays and speedruns the game can't provide proper commentary I have no idea how I'm ever going to measure up to their expectations. I'll do the best I can with the resources I've been able to commit to this endeavor, i.e. the amount of time I've been able to take away from my family to work on this event. I think everything is going to be just fine because this is not an event with the same expectations as a full GDQ but I still want to do the best I can. I'll be focusing on just run commentary today but I plan to incorporate a lot of the "intro to what a TAS is" stuff during the actual presentation. We'll see how things flow in today's practice and I'll take it from there. Thanks again for all of the support and here's to a great showing tomorrow!

I feel good about most things but I'm sure commentary will be a lot more free-flowing than scripted; scripting it just didn't feel right. I'll be directing people to the submissions instead of trying to highlight every last nuance of whether SM64 is a parallel universe or not.
