Now I'm very curious to know what the limits (ha) of Unexpected Disk Changes are. Change back to the right disk at the right time and you can probably avoid a softlock or crash.
The GitHub page of JPC states that the emulator is "capable of booting Windows up to Windows 95 (and windows 98 in safe mode) and some graphical linuxes." Would it be possible to run the original PC version of FF7 on JPC?
The original PC version was released in 1998, a few weeks before Windows 98 reached general availability stage. You are probably talking about the re-release years later.
There doesn't seem to be any legit DRM-free version of the remastered PC port from 2012. Using Hourglass on this version is probably out of the question.

The original PC release has 4 disks, including one for installation. It can't be run in windowed mode without patches. Therefore, this version is probably incompatible with Hourglass either.
Even though the rerecording version of JPC is said to be only compatible with DOS games, it still would be great if the up-to-date JPC can run this game. Hopefully switching disks won't be a big issue. Maybe the Windows version of Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure can be run in a similar way, too.

Anyone else notice this? Appears to break 3 hours using game over glitches, starting with dying alone during Nibelheim flashback.
I was actually swaping from Disc 1 to Disc 2 just after pressing New Game to load the wrong FMV, but his method seems to completely bypass it. I haven't tried yet to see if it works on Bizhawk.
The question remains though. Can we still Disc Swap, as it will be part of the movie file to shorten or disable FMV ?
Disc change to another game to glitch the World Map would be a no-no for me as the game shouldn't be in the m3u file to start with.

Sometimes the game will freeze if the wrong disc is inserted at certain cutscenes, and you can still find a way around it. The first time I have encountered this issue, I did a hard reset and changed back to proper disc.
In the video above, he does have a list of times where he changed the disc. But that doesn't apply to everything because he skipped like half the game.
So it should be possible to get through without hard resets while using cutscene glitch.

I need to go back to the pseudocode for the crit prediction script to find out what else I need; I remembered enemy levels being a thing about it.
As for kills and affection, only if they're relevant. I think Aeri's date is fastest but I haven't rigorously tested any of them.
PC-98 can run Windows 95, and Neko Project II, a PC-98 emulator, has been recently ported to Libretro.
I wonder what's the chances of NPII being able to run Final Fantasy 7 on Windows 95?

Here is a tutorial for running Windows 95 on NPII. Too bad I can't read it.
It let you download the NPII core. I don't think it adds any additional functionality yet, but hopefully becoming a libretro core makes that platform a step closer to being TASable.
hello guys,
I discovered many improvements for TASing PSX version:
-in CPR mini-game instead of doing the 9,9,9,9,5 I discovered that if you press O on last frame you get 11 point so breathe 4 times only instead of 5 by using 11,11,11,8 or 8,9,10,11...
-there is RNG counter for all mini-games and battles:
*marshing start score
*military salute mini-game
*Tifa slap: yaaay, THE MIGHTY TIFA SLAP SCARLET 5-0
*CD3 going to Jenova battle: I test all possibilities and found that it is impossible to get 0 encounter, I found a route to get 1 encounter (vs eye monster)
this MINI-GAME RNG advance by 33 in certain locations
Questions:
Can I swap CD to shorten FMVs??
Can I swap CD to skip change CD screen??
Can I swap CD to activate glitches?
The difference is that I never managed to make it work for FF9, either in Psxjin or Bizhawk whereas Disc swap works for FF7 and is part of the input so it's in the movie file.
But I agree, in the end it's probably better to not use Disc swap other than for the screen asking for it.
I don't see why it should not be used. It's a legitimate feature that works on console, and its certainly more innocuous than reset midframe the way lsnes does to corrupt SRAM.
I'd argue ejecting a disc in order to skip something goes against playing a game.
Unlike stuff like resetting, which can be argued to be a natural part of a game, and is sometimes integral for progression ([2720] Genesis X-Men by jaysmad in 07:04.48 comes to mind), ejecting a disc stops the game and doesn't allow progression until you put the disc back in.
Plus, modern games automatically exit out of the game as soon as you eject the disc instead of letting it hang, showing how not intended of a game feature it is.
And, once again, RTA specifically bans doing it.
'Must not open disk tray except when the game prompts you to '
effort on the first draft means less effort on any draft thereafter
- some loser
Just like opening the disc tray is a natural part of the game which is certainly more integral to progression (you have to do it to get to the next part of the game)! Of course, most of the times we reset are not in order to progress to the next part of the game, and similarly I don't think that should be a requirement for disc tray opening.
RTA standards have nothing to do with what the TAS community finds acceptable, and usually are due to hardware damage issues. For this reason (among others), RTA communitys usually ban up+down/left+right, but we have no problem with it.
