Is there any way to manipulate Chaz's Tsu damage? Your three shots against DF1 are for ~700, ~530 and ~630. I would imagine getting all three shots up to 700 would save a few seconds off the last combat round.

yes there is, and it's hard as hell, because I also have to manipulate the right attack from DF. This 700 shot is the only one I was able to get on record; in other instances, he spammed an attack-all spell or attacked the wrong person. I might try back...

I did redo DF I and saved an additional 51 frames. Update: I DO need the genocyclaw. Rika attacks about 50 hp less without it against DF II

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/478506600/janus3-phantasystariv.gmv After an insane number of resets and different strategies, I finally overcame DF II. I was able to save over 200 frames against the bosses in the Air Castle (compared to the test run with the tusk), although the DF II fight was a little longer. I was also able to get rid of 2 macros I didn't need I now stand 2560 frames ahead of the previous completed speedrun

Hey Janus, your WIP is looking sharp. Can't believe you're still finding improvements. I had an idea that I thought might save you some time (if you haven't tried it already). Before rescuing Kyra during the battle with the carnivorous trees, wouldn't you be able to save time by traveling to the Esper Mansion, beforehand? From here, you could directly ryuka to the mansion after recruiting Kyra.

I doubt it. The ice digger is on the second page of my items; getting it is already 30 frames. And I need go get in a vehicule to get near the Garuberk Tower. It looks complicated I might try it later on

You make a fair point. Specifically, after obtaining the Silver Tusk I was thinking you could run the following: 1) Enter/exit Meese 2) Use Ice Digger to travel to Esper Mansion. 3) Enter/exit. Ryuka back to Meese. 4) Resume normal run until after carnivorous tree battle. 5) After battle, ryuka to Esper Mansion. Not sure if all the entering/exiting and item management would end up saving time or not, but just an idea.

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1339674614/janus3-phantasystariv.gmv Althought the fight in Strength Tower wasn't as lucky, I'm still about 3500 frames ahead. There doesn't seem to be much of a difference between the silver tusk and the genocyclaw against the boss

It really seems like you should be attacking with Rika much more in the De-Vars fight. Deban is likely a waste of time if you can just manipulate the boss to hit Rune and you certainly don't need Saner. That said, Rune ends the fight in rough shape so maybe you really do need Deban...

yes, I need deban, and saner makes manipulation a lot easier. Don't forget that Chaz is only at level 4, and his dexterity is terrible, making it even harder to manipulate.

Sure, but Rika's attack does about 2.5x what Chaz does. I think it'd be worth testing if you had the time.

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/69350913/janus3-phantasystariv.gmv this is it! Although the Rykros fights were a little slower, I was able to save about 2k frames against Profound Darkness thanks to a doped-up Rika. It's a 5.6k frames save But since I never settle easy, I want to try and fight PD with a doped-up Chaz. But for that, I need enough telepipes/escapipes since I will kill Rune...

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1906840078/janus3-phantasystariv.gmv Hmm... At level 14, Chaz makes me save 760 frames from the WIP (against PD). Also, Rika was able to withstand PD II attack. Fighting the bosses on Rykros would rise him to level 17, leaving Rune at level 24 with only gifoi. stay tuned!

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1750844857/janus3-phantasystariv.gmv I've restarted to test a run with Chaz surviving the Tower of Courage Boss in order to be stronger against PD. After a new strategy, incredible luck and an insane amount of resetting, I've saved another 35 frames against Juza (now 2176 frames). I'm only 71 frames behind the previous trial (I had to buy more escapipes/telepipes, so it took a little longer)

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/996407876/janus3-phantasystariv.gmv I lost a few frames fighting Gy-Laguiah. Now 117 frames behind the previous WIP after Zio

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/445819842/janus3-phantasystariv.gmv remembering that macros use less frames, I saved another 241 frames agaisnt xe-la-thoul (now 3667 frames). I'm now ahead of the previous silver-tusk run by 6 frames

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/816208952/janus3-phantasystariv.gmv since the previous link desynch, I had to restart a little. I was able to save 321 more frames against xe-la-thoul (568 compared to the previous test run, 1771 compared to the previous published run). I'm now 420 frames ahead of the previous test

So while browsing over at sda, I came across the Phantasy Star IV RTA thread and read where, apparently, it's possible to flee from the Iglanova boss fight if he's paralyzed. Sounds like a good time-saver. Janus, you still around?

His profile says he was last active here on October 14th. That's interesting, especially since there are two Igglanovas. I wonder if fleeing the 2nd one is faster than Gryz killing it with Crash, and I also wonder how fleeing from both would change the EXP route; right now, Chaz gets Tsu right at the point where it starts being useful in conjunction with the Shadwblade.

That's a good question. As for the 2nd Igglanova, it would take a round in order to set up using Earth with Chaz, so it would likely end up being the slower option as opposed to sticking with using Crash in the first. The EXP route, though, might need some adjustment. Is there an alternate battle order in Zio's fort which includes, say, 3 Shadow Sabers or 2 Shadow Sabers and another foe?

Another small and easy improvement is to hit start during the space "docking" cutscenes in order to skip them entirely. This would save several hundred frames during the run.

More savings! So I went ahead and made an optimized "proof of concept" WIP that flees from Igglanova #1. And despite BizHawk having 82 more frames of lag (better emulation, I suppose?), 1,085 frames were saved. However, a BizHawk run would assuredly add around a minute's worth of extra lag. So it'd be a matter of personal preference whether to stick with Gens or go with BizHawk. Anyhow...I'd love to see a v4 version of PS4 made -- but I don't want to continue any further without hearing from Janus. If he'd be interested, I'd love to co-author with him and see whether this run could be pushed down past 1:25:00.

oh, that's nice. That would make a great start to a v4, with the very first fight being a complete surprise like that.

Oh, don't feel bad about "doing my run." I'm done with TASing, it's too time-consuming
