My impressions as a game developer: For those who haven't read anything, the controller has motion sensors that detect all 3 axis movement as well as tilting left/right. What does this do? It enables games to be played in a way never possible before and i'm not just saying it. The games will be so fun to play that heck, i won't play games on pc or anywhere else anymore. Imagine fight games with this O_O sport games, racing games, accuracy games, things like kuru-kuru kururin, kirby's tiltn tumble and wario ware will surely have sequels on this. Not to mention many new types of games. The market has been needing this. We're (well I am) tired of same old thing over and over. This just doesnt look like revolution, it looks like a damn remote control. But take my word for it, you'll want one of these. My opinion on this revelation: nintendo did 2 bad moves. 1# the controller design looks bad. It just does, at first impression. I dont know if its the best that could be done untill i get my hands on it, but i think it looks bad. #2 they should have kept the mistery untill there were games to play with it. The audience won't fully understand this, most people will just say it plainly sucks. Or maybe they shouldn't have called it "Revolution", oh wait, again nintendo plays a little game of words there. It revolves around the space. hmmm OK but it created a lot of expectation and people imagined way too many things. This was a bucket of cold water on everyone. The controller should either look very cool or come with a finished demo (not the tech demos they showed). Well, like i said, you'll want one of these, just trust me. You gotta be crazy to not want to play the games that are popping into my head right now. Thanks for the Nintendo Revolution, nintendo. But bad markettting there.

But it looks terribly cumbersom to play games we are used to... For example, how could you play a fighting game on that?

Looks to me like this would make fighting games way easier to play and potentially much more involving... but only if they are made specifically with it in mind. (Some existing games or things that lend themselves more to digital input can probably be played on that remote controller thing which is like a regular NES game controller when turned on its side.)

I have one of the earliest implentations of the techonology, the Microsoft Sidewinder [something] gamepad, and I must say, that if the dead-zones aren't completely out in the weather (E.g. you must hold it on it's side to gain full movement in on direction), the concept is actually quite effective. Direction of blows etc. could be controlled by the thumbstick or tiltfunction, and we would have the first beat-em-up where facing your opponent (Is always either too difficult or too easy due to collision detection of various qualitys) is no longer a prerequisite to winning.

My guess is, Nintendo will make a controller expansion (e.g. something with easy access to a large number of buttons simultaneously, possibly an arcade-style controller) that the Rev's controller won't be directly involved in for "traditional" fighting games. Can't imagine playing even Smash Bros. on that thing, much less Soul Calibur. I dig the "Sideways NES pad/remote control" design, though, particularly the Power button, which really fits in with its "more like every OTHER electronic hooked up to the TV" design. My only concern is, naturally, losing the remote; the Wavebird didn't have this problem so much because it was big and you had to get up to turn the Cube off. This thing has neither.

And imagine most gamers that flail and jerk their controller like mad in every game because they can't get their motion perceptions to quiet down because flailing doesn't add much to a game other than unplugging controllers. Oh wait, now your flailing has a purpose, and $5 says that 2 foot cord running the two halves of the controller starts fraying and breaks/snaps in two in less than 3 months (unless they've put in some kind of breakaway strain relief plug - but then game programmers have to write auto-pause code into their games to pause and wait for the game to reattach their controller pieces...) - but maybe just past the warranty period so Nintendo can pull the old N64 controller rape juke. Unless Nintendo can find a way to market this effective, it'll just be another VirtualBoy... Nintendo's turning into what happened to Sega a few years ago... My bet is they're going to go bankrupt or get hurt so bad they'll have to go back to making trading cards like they did in the late 1800s/early 1900s - especially since they aren't even releasing Zelda this fall - Sony and Microsoft are going to release their new consoles and the new Nintendo will be too little too late - and too broken. LONG LIVE THE NES/SNES! :-D Skuzz

Bankrupt. The Revolution was also supposed to support selected downloaded games for NES, SNES, and N64. All I want to know is how in the flying 747 fuck do they plan on doing that with this down-syndromed excuse of a controller?

You all forget what you're holding right now: a mouse. You dont move it all over the desk do you? its small movements that do the job. Of course the games are adjusted so that you can play the whole of it by doing movements as big as you are doing right now with your mouse. the difference is that its 3d instead of 2d. When using the analog stick we expect games where you don't have to move it much. But some games can use only the 3d controller and that's also fun as you can really move it around. The nes controller is right there. For the other systems i'm not sure, we'll see.

Well it looks pretty stupid, but if it is capable of all that foda says I can't wait. On side note, it looks like one advantage of this type of controller is that you can choose which hand to use for which side.
g,o,p,i=1e4,a[10001];main(x){for(;p?g=g/x*p+a[p]*i+2*!o: 53^(printf("%.4d",o+g/i),p=i,o=g%i);a[p--]=g%x)x=p*2-1;}

The left-hand part (analog stick and Z1/Z2 triggers) is actually an extra part that plugs into the bottom of the read controller (the remote-looking part). Apparently you don't need it at all for some games, and you need other connected thingies for others. (note that at least one of these others - yet to be seen - is apparently a more standard controller "shell", possibly for fighting games and platformers which would be hard to play with the remote-like setup). So it won't be connected unless a game needs it, and if a game needs it the motion-sensing won't be extreme (the demo that used both was Metroid Prime, where the motion sensing replaced look, and the analog replaced movement).

Don't like the controller? Plug in a Gamecube controller and quit complaining.

That thing is weird. I'm not sure how to feel about it. It's certainly much more interesting than the PS3 and XBOX 360 controllers. This really opens up a whole new world of possible games. If it works as it says in that article, I think I might have to get one. The extra backwards compatibility with NES, SNES and N64 games would then seal the deal. (even though I already have emulators)

I think it's fascinating. So long as they make a sequel to Eternal Darkness, I'll consider investing in The Revolution.

No, what's the news? It's not just that you can buy other controllers to plug it into, is it?

You talking this? The picture is simply IGN's mockup concerning an official announcement. My question is, if they're going to do this with the controller, what's the point of the remote? Why not design it with more traditional sensibilities and maintain previous functionalities while keeping the new ones without having to fork over more money?

I thought you meant this, but oh well. I figure the big question is whether the "traditional" controller will be packed in with all Revolutions for free. That could determine whether more games with the traditional interface will be developed. But I think Nintendo wants to emphasize the functions of the vertical controller and make other controllers into alternatives.

I know the controller is so as not to scare off your mom. I wanna play Katamari Damacy using it. And... I wanna see my mom play it too. She hates computers because she spends all day working with them already.

So it appeals to people who like to watch lots of TV?
