My main gripe with modern RPGs lately in general is how much they have been stripping away how many sort of builds or playing styles you can do to cater to Non-RPG players so no matter what they put in their stats or what items they equip or use they never really face any peril or play differently to surprise players. Except maybe if you are playing Dark Souls (Which actually is a good game btw). The later Final Fantasy games seem to suffer from this as well I find.

A thread about bad FF games and no one mentions this? Also regarding indie, posts like these don't exactly inspire confidence, and uh..:
Every game is free to download, but then dumps on your head a load of nags, pop-ups, and pleas for upgrades or in-app purchases — some games are $4.99, some are $15.99, others just constantly implore you to donate $.99 so the developer can have a beer. Worst of all, it makes buying things impossibly easy — you enter a credit card when first setting up your Ouya, and there are often no confirmation boxes or checks against you spending thousands of dollars.
Indie doesn't mean 100% better; greed is everywhere regardless of what type of company. Edit: I forgot to link this: http://ca.ign.com/videos/2013/01/17/psa-dont-buy-final-fantasy-all-the-bravest

I recently got Magic Duels: Origins for the iPad, and besides being a free download, it's surprisingly lacking of any nags or popups. In fact, I have still to encounter a single in-app purchase when playing the story mode. (There are IAP's, but they are elsewhere in the game entirely.) So not all free games seem to be like that. (Now, whether you consider it an "indie game" is a matter of definition.) (And sorry for the non-FF related plug. Just wanted to comment.)

Then something very strange happened. Square stopped making JPRGs, at least for the Final Fantasy series.
Square Enix happened.
I actually wanted to check this when you wrote it, but I totally forgot. I remembered it only now. Final Fantasy X was published in July 2001. The Square/Enix merger happened in April 2003. So no, I don't think "Square Enix happened" is the correct answer.

You have all the valid reasons to dislike it, but back then FFX was actually met with very significant acclaim, and although certain aspects of it were controversial as you said, others were considered quite innovative (the Sphere Grid, facial motion capture, etc.) and generally done to a very high standard. But when a company starts rehashing things, they become subject to a certain rule: you can't innovate the same thing twice, but you can make something already stale even more so the more you replicate it. It's exactly like inbreeding; bad aspects/ideas come to the surface and just stay there until a massive influx of fresh ideas is introduced. I think this was exactly what happened with the vast majority of Square Enix titles developed in-house.

You spent 50 euro on a game that is 14 years old? Is it rare now or something?

It's the HD remastered version of it. (They updated some of the models and textures, and made it support 1080p resolution.) Btw, I notice that Final Fantasy Type-0 has appeared on Steam. I wonder if I should trust Square Enix once again, or learn from my previous mistake... Any opinions? (Yes, I know it's not a JRPG per se, but an "action RPG" in the same style as Crisis Core. Nevertheless. I wasn't extremely fond of the latter, so I'm a bit dubious.)
