Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu is a nice looking sidescroller with nice music as well, but there is nothing particularly note worthy about it.

The main improvement in this run over the existing published one is a new trick that preserves your horizontal velocity when jumping out of the river and off of conveyer belts. It also contains a neat little jump trick originally found by Diman that saves a few frames. The first level was played by Randil, who saved a few frames in it, the rest of the run is based off of Baxter's original.
Basically the trick I found is just releasing the right button the same frame you jump. Nothing special right? I'm surprised it went undiscovered for so long. Well, probably no one was looking...
Improvements:
Level 1: 7 Frames due to Randil: "I saved 1 frame on level 1-1 by getting maximal boosts from platforms, 4 frames by getting a better boost from the first platform on level 1-3, and 2 frames on 1-4 by jumping up the vertical section faster. "
Level 2: -3 Frames due to frame rule (?)
Level 3: 3-2 Improved ~30 frames due to momentum preservation trick.
Level 4: 0 (but the hits on the boss are slightly different.)
Level 5: 5-2 Improved ~70 frames due to momentum preservation trick. 5-4 improved ~5 frames due to Diman's jump.

In my quest to obsolete old runs, this one I thought would be a tough one, but just trying random things I stumbled upon this improvement, lucky me!
Baxter's original run synced just fine on the latest FCEUX version. However, after I used Randil's WIP and patched in the rest of Baxter's run, there was a 3 frame loss at the end of the autoscrolling lava level. This was surprising since the level itself synced just fine with no added frames. Perhaps it was some kind of frame rule, but I couldn't fix it. A similar thing happened at the cloud boss, the first 6 shots synced just fine, but for some reason the 7th and 8th shots needed to be modified (although this didn't end up costing anything.) So maybe there is still something left undiscovered if someone were to dive deeper into this game. Diman also mentioned a way to hit one of the last bosses twice at once, but I'm not sure how.

I'm not real familiar with the work that led to this improvement. I mean, how much faster was Randil's WIP? I get the impression that for a run this old, there should be more improvement than just four seconds gained through some better momentum preservation. But if that's the way it is, I can live with that.

Randil's run was 7 frames ahead in level 1 (which is roughly 17000 frames long.) Baxter's original was really solid. So in this case, old doesn't mean poorly optimized. Same with Blublu's Rad Gravity run. As a side note, it is interesting how standards have evolved in TASes like this one. In the original, Adelikat, Arc, and Bisqwit all gave Baxter's run a technical rating of 9. By today's standards though the run seems like nothing special. EDIT:

Oh yeah, the run is only an improvement of about 100 frames. So I guess the other ~2 seconds comes from how the site calculates movie length.

Fair enough. I finally watched the run. For the record, it's not FDS, since it's not using the disk system. It should just be an NES run. Your run has some slight style differences to Baxter's. There's not much though. I did like your use of knee drops occasionally, since that move is never shown off in Baxter's run. It seemed like your strategies were a little different in 3-1 and in the dragon fights leading up to the final bosses; could you discuss those more? This is still an entertaining game, even if it is relaxing. Nice job.

The dragon fight takes the same amount of time, I just happen to have a different power up. The second and third dragons were the same as Baxter though. This game is quite simple compared to most other platformers and sidescrollers. There are very few tricks that actually speed you up at all. Let's see 3-1. I played that level the exact same as Baxter, so not sure what you see as different, was it something specific? vvv done!

I thought you may have delayed a little differently in the upper-left corner. I could be mistaken though... I didn't compare the runs side by side and was going off rough memories of the old one. Since I'm wrong about where the improvements are, could you provide some crude table of improvements?
