Today at TASVideos we get a little chess puzzle. It's white's move and he can checkmate in 1. Can you find the mate in 1?
Watch the movie to find out!

Noxxa: Nice little puzzle and showcase, but obviously this isn't worth a site publication. Rejecting.

I'm guessing red. PxB ++. EDIT: nope, nvm, wouldn't work. NxQ. PxB is only check. Also, feeling too lazy to actually download the video and a ROM to watch it.

My hope was that the joke was that the board was rotated. The white (blue) pawns on the left and right hand sides of the board quash that theory, though. If you can find a chess game that allows you to rotate the board 90 degrees (or I suppose 180 degrees, though that's less fun), that might be a good April Fools joke for next year.

Where are you even seeing that? I thought it was some sort of glitch because there isn’t any mate possible.

I misunderstood the NxQ as being a new solution rather than the next move of why his previous failed.

Here's a hint: First play 1. c8=Q Nxc8 , then take back those moves. Now what? Solution: 1. Qb7# ; the pawn on c7 moves and captures towards the left (towards the a-file) according to a glitch in Battle Chess.

I would just like to note that this movie fails to color a dinosaur.

An encode would be great (I can't run Bizhawk). If that's a legit bug and not merely an AFD joke, I'd be curious how it works. Chess problem composers love this stuff -- "White takes back his last move and mates in 1" is a pretty standard setup.

Yeah, but this AFD joke relies entirely on a Battle Chess bug. Without knowledge of the bug, it really isn't funny in any way. I found it funny because I already knew what the bug was before I even saw the movie (because I had played around with it before and even made a wiki page). I can't say the same for anyone else though.

So executing c8=Q, then taking it back allows the pawn (now back at c7) to capture horizontally, forcing the mate after Qb7? Am I getting that right?

Yeah, pretty much.
