I would like to make a TAS for the Wii called Big Brain Academy. I have tried countless different ROM downloads and all of them give me a file without an extension which won't work with Dolphin (my emulator). Am I doing something wrong or do I need to find the right download or what? [MOD EDIT: a more appropriate topic name]

Is your file manager showing filename extensions? What happens when you just add one?

I do have extensions enabled. It is definitely a nonspecific file. When I just add one the emulator doesn't recognise the file at all.

If you use the Open button in Dolphin to open the file, what happens? Does it work, does Dolphin crash, or is there an error message? If it doesn't work, is it possible to use a program like 7-Zip to open the file?

No wonder it doesn't work. You're trying to emulate Nintendo DS game on GC/Wii emulator.

Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree, known in the PAL region as Big Brain Academy for Wii and in Japan as Wii de Yawaraka Atama Juku (Wiiでやわらかあたま塾?), is a video game released for the Wii.

How big is the file? Maybe you just downloaded a server error message or something. You could also try looking into it with a hex editor and see if the first bytes look similar to other ROMs.

It is 1.5 gigs so it's definitely there and I don't know what you mean by hex editor but I tried opening it with notepad++ but it says the file is too big to open. If it helps I downloaded it as a torrent.

Because torrenting is incredibly sketchy to begin with if you're not doing research before each download, so it's highly likely you either downloaded the wrong file or you missed the information needed to make the file work in the first place. Here's a fun little experiment: Try manually adding .iso (or whatever the Wii file format is) to the end of the filename and see if that works.

Ah, I misunderstood that line. My apologies. Rest of my post still stands, though. Just search for a file that actually has an extension.

You said you tried adding an extention, but didn't say which one, try .wbfs if you havent. I'm a little fuzzy on Wii games, but I'm pretty sure straight iso rip of wii games are always 4.6gb or so, even if the game itself just uses 50mb of that. So either you have a *.rar, *.zip, *.zip, *.wbfs or a bad file.
