Well uploading in 4k60fps works now/again/other. I'll give you an update when it processes the video fully. Update: Well I uploaded a 1440p60fps too forgot to mention that. So what happens is when you upload a 1440p/4k at 60fps? It renders out to 1080p60fps. My Firefox doesn't run HTML5 so I can see all the resolutions and the max I saw was 1080p. Chrome is running it and says 1080p60fps. No sign of 1440 or 4k when uploading a 60fps video in that resolution.

So... does that mean Firefox can run HTML5? If so, what should I do to make it run?

Yes, Firefox can run HTML5 but I wouldn't recommended it. https://www.youtube.com/html5 For Firefox I deliberately don't run it to make sure I can see max resolution because HTML5 on Firefox shows 360 and 720p from memory (don't quote me on that)

Hurray for PAL games? Off-topic I know :P Edit: It looks like Youtube is bad at being good. Currently, choosing 240p gives you the 360p video, when choosing 360p it gives you 480p and so on (look at rightclick -> "Stats for nerds"). This might be the reason why we suddenly have 480p60, as it is actually 720p60!
Warning: Might glitch to credits I will finish this ACE soon as possible (or will I?)

So... if we follow this logic... 144p only videos are now completely unplayable? (not that it matters, but I'd just like to know)

It's not like anything below 480p is watchable on youtube. For maximal quality, you even have to go to 720p.

That's the cold harsh truth. Youtube seems to screw up the quality of anything < 720p. I don't like it either. I think all sources should be treated fairly regardless of resolution because resolution does not imply "quality." But apparently google doesn't think so.

This is the truest truth I read in quite a bit of time. Not that I mind much, but if they want us to upload everything in 720p+ so badly, then at least try to label our videos correctly. Instead of giving that 480p60 BS. By the way, I complained about it a few days ago on Google Support but they ignored it completely. Seems like they're not competent enough to even fix a simple problem like this.

Google seems to ignore most feedback that appears on google support as far as my experience goes.

...You're blaming Youtube for low resolution videos looking worse than HD? Any low-resolution video is going to look horrible when upscaled in any video player and that's probably never going to change. It's not Youtube's fault that low resolution videos look awful, it's the fact that they're low resolution in the first place.

No, it's not the upscaling. It's the quality. Low resolution video on youtube gets blocky and grainy. Furthermore, the audio gets a "metallic" sound, all which are signs of poor compression. Compare a TAS encode (< 480p) on TASVideos vs. the same on youtube.

Nope. As I said before, I don't have a problem with that. But I do have a problem with my videos being labelled as 480p60 when they're actually 720p60.

Low resolution video is always blocky and grainy when upscaled in a video player. Open it in VLC or MPC and you'll get the same result. The video would look pretty much normal if you could change the Youtube player's size manually to fit the original resolution of the video. The only time I've heard obvious sound distortion is when the video's in 144p, and the only time you should be watching 144p is when that's the only choice of quality available so I don't find it to be a problem. Yeah, you can blame that on Youtube, but there's no way that even the worst internet wouldn't be able to comfortably stream at least 240p. Then again, my hearing sucks. Anything going into my left ear already sounds tinny and metallic, so I'm not the right person to ask about sound. I still think the main issue has to do with how the video is encoded in the first place. Link to video This was a direct 256x240 frame dump from Bizhawk uploaded straight to Youtube. To me it looks and sounds just fine, even though it's only 30fps. Are there any problems with it I'm not seeing or hearing?

Isn't that just a small bug in how the options are displayed? They're still 720p, it's not like Youtube actually downscales them to 480p when re-encoding... Or at least that's what I read before in the thread.

The game is too simple to suffer from most problems due to youtube encoding, but nevertheless, some blocking is pretty visible. There's color bleeding too. I drew rectangles around some of them. It starts to be really noticeable as soon as you add a little more complexity. http://filebeam.com/e0f8947f7d704a3ba859501922269366.jpg Here's an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FBJe9gsrdI&list=PLHk4wPVvdmw2HqLgrJRuSyA0Kc4IUiFDS&index=1 Watch it in the different qualities (thankfully it doesn't suffer from metallic sound; they may have fixed this on recent videos).

...That explains it. You're watching everything in fullscreen on a huge monitor. I still don't see how it's Youtube's fault when you're upscaling the player (and therefore video) by 7-8x the original resolution. If anyone's to blame for how bad that video looks in 1980p or whatever, it's me for not point-resizing it to HD before uploading. Maybe Youtube dampens the quality further compared to other video players, but it's still a fact that any low-resolution video upscaled to that level in any video player is going to look blocky and awful. ...I feel like I'm completely missing your point. Am I?

Give me the original and I'll see if I can spot blocking in the original. Maybe I'll also uploading my own low-quality downscaled video (hint: the original is going to look blurry, but not blocky; but the reverse will be seen on youtube). Also check the video link I posted.

I already compared this: http://imgur.com/a/U3NHl Download full size images. The top image is 1440p point resize on Youtube. Others are various Youtube resizes. Original encode looks most similar to 240p Youtube.

I think I deleted my original video after uploading it. Looking at a different video from the same game in MPC, though, I can sort of see what you mean. Same deal with that screenshot: Fullscreen in MPC, original video 256x240. Does look a bit better than Youtube. I don't usually play videos fullscreen because I've got an older laptop that can't really handle fullscreen HD, so I don't really notice these kinds of issues. The video you posted looks fine to me at 360p and up on the default player, obviously worse in fullscreen. 240p isn't bad, 144p is absolutely dreadful as it's always been but that doesn't surprise me given that it's hard to put any detail in a video that could fit on the screen of the original Game Boy. ...Maybe I just have low standards, I dunno.

Well, obviously you're not going to notice that much if you sit on a tiny screen, but screens with 1920x1080 is pretty high these days and on such screens, it looks absolutely awful. I always compare full screen, of course. Can't watch videos non-full screen. ...Well, unless your computer can't handle it. That sucks :(

Youtube point resize to 1440p looks much better than the MKV encode to me. 360p Youtube vs. 360p MKV: Youtube looks worse. Multiple Youtube transcodes of the same source = worse quality.

I think it can handle fullscreen just fine on its own, I just have a 24in HDTV hooked up as my primary monitor so anything above 1080p fullscreen is out of the question for my aging laptop. Also, damn, now that I'm actually looking for issues with Youtube's re-encoding I'm seeing it's way worse than I initially thought.

Well, I disagree. Point resize is evil. There's a reason why bilinear or other filters are typically used with upscaling.
