Rad Racer is a racing game of the famous producer called "Square" who also made Chrono Trigger and many other top games later. The graphic is pretty nice (for NES conditions) with changing backgrounds even during a race. It also has the best speed feeling like no other NES racing game and therefore requires extremely fast reactions. The opponent cars of each course are different, from Lamborghini, over Porsche till Mercedes (you drive the famous Ferrari or a F1-Machine). This game is extremely hard to beat on normal conditions, since there are no continues at all (if you lose in course 8 you will start in course 1 again) thats why many players couldn't beat this game completely.
This movie shows a complete and perfect walkthrough of all 8 courses trying to finish them as fast as possible.
Here are the times and the final scores after each course: (note that the time is a countdown, so the higher the time the better)
  • Course 1 - 45 sec remaining, total score: 8687
  • Course 2 - 42 sec remaining, total score: 17303
  • Course 3 - 53 sec remaining, total score: 26105
  • Course 4 - 43 sec remaining, total score: 35143
  • Course 5 - 48 sec remaining, total score: 43918
  • Course 6 - 39 sec remaining, total score: 51887
  • Course 7 - 43 sec remaining, total score: 60444
  • Course 8 - 43 sec remaining, final score: 69433
To reach this times in normal conditions is by far impossible since I took so many risk everytime to keep the best speed. 1 Frame later reaction would mostly end with a crash!
In Course 3 and Course 8 I was exactly 1 frame to late to reach a 1 sec better time, in Course 8 I tried to redo everything as good as I could and spended the whole last day by trying to optimize this 1 stupid frame to reach a whole sec faster but without luck. But then I found out that I can manipulate the randomness a bit by pressing pause right before the finish and on this way I still managed to reach 43 sec instead of 42 in Course 8. I'm pretty sure that 44 sec is impossible (even theoretical) at least in the last course. Course 3 was to far away to redo everything afterwards so I let this one be.
Enjoy this crazy race-thrilling!

Stop complaining and if you have followed the instruction in the FAQ, download Media Player Classic and FFDShow, then you are in business.

OK I understand, but why using Vorbis?
Do you mean: Why experiment with Vorbis? For the same reason we experimented with X264 after using divx-variants for a long time. Getting the same or better quality with smaller file size is a good thing.

Bisqwit: OK understood. Phil: It's not a problem for me to find a good player for this format, I just wanted to playback it on my DVD player (on CD) which only supports DivX, so I could watch it without using a PC.

Fear not Saturn. Soon Kiss DP-600-series will be released where windows media player 9 is installed in the dvd player, enabling you to watch files encoded with H264 codec and many other files & features, although I have forgotten the direct link to this news, though as for .ogm and .mkv I hardly think Kiss-DP-600 will support those files or at least in the near future.

(For those who can't guess what that means - briefly explained, Saturn2 contacted me privately and demanded an explananation for why AVI wasn't made, and I told him there is already OGM and MKV. He wants AVI because he has issues with his DVD player. I am not interested. We debated the issue a few minutes and then I got bored with the debate and put him into ignore. Then he seemed to be sure I have personal issues against him, which I don't have.)

A very fast reply if it isn't necessary. For those who want know more: I just asked him afterwards why he has ignored me without reason and he didn't even reply. That's very humanly if you ask me, and I don't wish someone of you this to happen. Just a note.

... Why on earth is there an argument about this? If you want an avi make one. It's not like the process is a big secret.

I think Saturn feels a bit disappointed because he wanted the downloaders actually be able to watch his run without installing certain applications + I also think that if this movie were encoded to avi, then maybe more people would have downloaded it. You have to consider, there are lots of people who does not even understand how to handle media player, codecs etc etc... AVI has become so regular nowadays.

What's the obsession with AVI or other media players? Why not just watch the .fcm? It has perfect picture and sound quality.

Because you certainly cannot play .fcm on your dvd player and regarding .fcm, Im most certain that not a single dvd player can play .fcm for many many years, so there's your answer.

Ouzo: No, mostly on a DVD player. Bisqwit forgot to describe that I also asked him why the hell he has picked exactly this movie for experimenting with OGM instead of any other movie that is rejected like the tons of Donkey Kong 1-min movies and here he couldn't give me an answer instead of ignoring me. It's just impudent to no end. Yes, I'm very dissappointed the way he has acted today, since this will be the only movie in OGM format. Because it is too complex newer movies will be AVI again he told me.

BECAUSE I DID NOT EXPECT YOU (OR WHOMEVER'S MOVIE I HAD CHOSEN) TO BECOME A PAIN IN THE A** FOR THAT. [Edit] Honestly. I do not have anything against you (or at least didn't have before this). I didn't "pick exactly this movie for experimenting". The only thing I "picked" was "the next movie to be published". And for that, I decided to use the vorbis codec, all in the name of technical improvements. And it was your movie that was published. And I really regret that now, considering how bad feedback I got from the author of the movie. I'd unpublish the movie because of the utter distaste this debate has gave to me, but I don't wish to make it the first case. [1] I'm not making an AVI because - there already are TWO multimedia files released with this movie (that's more than my preference; therefore I discourage anyone adding an AVI to the entry) - viewing either one of them is possible to anyone with modest effort - it would take time to re-encode it (admittedly, less time than already spent in this debate) - time from my free time which can be spent more effeciently - if someone has special requirements on the multimedia files, he can fulfill those himself. We already have a viewable file released - I'm not interested in viewability on a specific hardware device [2] You should be grateful for that - this movie was published - it has gained extra attention due to this debate [3] I ignored you because - you continued to debate after I had explained reasons of [1] [4] I'm angry because - despite my good intentions, all the feedback has been saturated by complaints - the movie author takes it personally and represents a "why me, why not someone else" position (not with those literal words) as if he's somehow higher priority person than others

Bisqwit, being a long-time watcher of these movies I just registered here to tell you that I appreciate any experiments towards superior and open standards. Don't be discouraged by those that do not wish to change or learn, changes have to be done to enhance oneself. Aside from the obvious advantages in file size, traffic and video quality, picking a new codec and content format might enhance viewers' minds towards realizing there's more than Microsoft-stuff or even lead people like Saturn into learning something about video compression - a knowledge he might benefit from later, if he ever decides to use his DVD-Player for more than watching pre-made videos he downloaded off the net or got on DVD. At least that's my definition of free software. It doesn't only make you free from bindings to software companies you're forced to trust, but it can also free your mind.

So, uh... What's keeping Saturn from finding some improvement and then resubmitting it, therefore obsoleting this? I also love the "I should unpublish this for how you've been acting" and "You should be grateful I published it at all" Bisqwit's taking. Isn't it us who work on these movies and let you host them that makes your site popular?

Yeah, why should everyone be grateful that Bisqwit's running this site from his personal computer using his personal internet connection? I mean, it's not like he built this site from scratch or anything, for free, for us.

Now now. I'm not unappreciative for what he's done, but him having to run those off to get someone to agree with him or keep him "in line" just makes him sound pretty hoity-toity.

Actually I was much more dissappointed by your acting (ignoring, not replying on private question) compared to the movie format you did. If you would explain me that in the IRC channel instead of ignoring me (what maked me very angry - and surely everyone who would get this experience of the admin personaly) the debate would end imediately, and you would do it much easier for me and yourself that way. What happened afterwards was just because I was very angry and couldn't understand what you did. I just wanted to get a explanation as I asked you in a private messege (I wanted to spare the public of this) and you were even too cowardly to reply me there even after 1 hour (I would at least do that). Only as I started to post it here you reply like a rocket and explain it only because this is public and you feared to stultify yourself by this. That's fact. After that I didn't even cared of the movie at all. Of course it's ok if you want to improve the movies technical, but your acting was not fair at all.

I recognize that wasn't proper, and I'm sorry that I also have personal emotions that don't always appear the most constructive.

Flonne: Huh? Prinnies? Laharl: What are you doing here? Prinny Squad: We thought we might as well give it a shot, dood. Etna: What!? You're not allowed to pull of a coup d'etat without me!
