Super Mario Bros. is a NES game that starts Mario's job of rescuing the princess.
Usually, the player goes through 8 worlds composed of 4 levels each, but this run uses the warp from 1-2 to 4-1, and the warp from 4-2 to 8-1.
I didn't abuse any programming errors, nor taking hits or dying. The only trouble I had was at 8-3, where I had to lose some frames to avoid fireworks.
Sorry for giving no info about the rom, it didn't come with the info and I don't know how to use GoodNES.

Noxxa: Hello inakilbss, and welcome to TASVideos. Unfortunately, your movie is not up to the standards of our site, as it loses several seconds compared to the published movies of this game. While your attempt is okay for a first TAS, it does not merit a publication on the site. Also, "glitchless" categories are only relevant when glitches make a major difference to the way the game is run, and in the case of this game, it is not. For these reasons, I'm rejecting this movie.

Is it really necessary to ridicule the guy so much? I feel like we should be giving all our beginners one free mulligan when they submit a run like this, not understanding the expectations of submissions. You could say that he deserves some ribbing for not reading the rules, or any of the other easy-to-find explanations about TASvideos. And you'd be right. But this is not ribbing. I say let's give people one free pass: moderate threads like this to remove the most negative replies that don't convey any useful information. Shower the guy in assistance and friendliness. And only then, if he doesn't take the helpful advice and essentially does the same thing again, would it feel appropriate to see all these facetious responses dripping with sarcasm. Cue a few "gtfo drybes you suck at tasing anyway" :p

Please, continue training and TASing, especially if you find it fun to do. The knowledge you gained while doing this run will make your next attempts easier and faster. If you manage to obsolete it in a glitchless category, regardless of the general reception of such a run, you'll know you are not a bad TASer (a pretty good one I'd say). You can also try to find other games to TAS, of course. The "ask for feedback" part is really important ;) If you want another example, here is what happened for my first publication (Castlevania "minimalist, pacifist"): I started with the idea of just learning how to TAS, so I tried to find a game without too much complex gameplay mechanisms; that way it was a lot easier to manage everything (no subpixel nightmare, no varying speed for the character, etc...). The category was chosen for the same reasons, I wouldn't have to manage the subweapons and hearts for example, but I still wanted something that could be interesting to watch. I guess I was lucky to be able to find a good game/category combination: it was quite "beginner-friendly" but at the same time could be entertaining to watch. Then I just started it, and asked for feedback (thanks to Derakon, Scrimpeh and all the other people, btw ^^), still having in mind that I wasn't going to submit it, it was just a test run. Then, due to the good feedback and tips, it appeared that it could have a chance of being published, but obviously not before I restarted it and polished it. With better knowledge of the game, I could easily patch the mistakes and improve it by quite a lot. And it worked... But I can't tell if that situation happens frequently: first submission -> publication. Anyway, know that if you continue and ask for people's opinions, you can only get better ^^

Yeah, there is way too much harping on the guy going on here. I think most of you are trying to be helpful but he's gotten the message. No need to keep hammering it in.

Hey, I submitted my first ever TAS and it was published! Granted, I spent 4 months making it and I did plenty of research about the game and TASvideos in the meantime. Doesn't seem like much of either was performed here. No vote, but don't stop trying.

Anyway, this is a very bad choice of game for a first-timer for a very non-obvious reason: SMB locks transitions to a 21-frame boundary that makes it incredibly difficult to find improvements that actually finish the game faster, which on top of the game being fairly simple makes it hard to find creative new routes. You'll basically be doomed to spending 99% of your optimization effort on the last stage, it's one of the few TASes where even experienced TASers are having a hard time finding even a single frame of improvement and the existing pre-glitch-discovery runs are already very close to as optimal as they can be without them because of that. Beyond that, if a game's been TASed already, you should find out what details about it are known and tricks were used to do the existing runs and be prepared to use those. If it hasn't, then you should find out as much as you can about its inner workings and blaze through it. Glitches are nice to have, but there are plenty of runs that are very entertaining with just inhumanly-precise gameplay (i.e. Sub Terrania, most run-and-guns).

Wow. That's more than I expected. My point is that, SMB is a really glitchy game, and entertainment mainly comes from glitches. Even andrewg's warped console run is glitchy. To make a glitchless run, it might not be even as interesting as a well-made console run. Besides, it's really hard to define "glitchless" in SMB. Is this a glitch? You may sometimes do that unconsciously on console. Is backward jumping a glitch? It's hard to define. All in all, "glitchless" in SMB would never make a good goal. The game SMB is probably TASed to death by now (mainly my fault), but there are lots of things to TAS such like hacks or similar games. I'm sure you'll make great progress if you keep trying. :)

My biggest problem with a glitchless category is hitboxes. The #1 complaint from people who are not familiar with SMB1 speedruns and watch one for the first time is the pirahna plant hitboxes. It looks like you should have died and yet you did not. Is it a glitch that the hitbox is wrong? Even if it's not a glitch, it looks glitchy as hell. When something as simple as 'how to jump over a pirahna plant' is contentious I think a 'glitchless' category can't be defined for SMB1.
