Greetings! I'm a newbie and here is my first submission. So, let's all be careful now. :)
I got an idea to do Gods, because I never managed to finish the last boss on PC. Gods is not a classic game, but I've seen worse. You control a (Greek?) hero who is going to become a god. This hero moves really badly and can't even wobble very well. There are lots of weapons, monsters, items, "puzzles", levers, doors, traps, secrets, treasures and even a wandering shopkeeper to deal with. Many different bonuses are awarded no matter what you do: play well to get "bonus" or play badly to get "help bonus". Bosses are huge, so at least there is something worth seeing.
Here are some explanations:
  • (1:03:18) This monster must be killed to avoid collision damage
  • (1:11:00) One monster should appear here, but it doesn't! I don't know why! Lucky me!
  • (1:40:50) The fireball saves time in the boss fights
  • (2:01:30) Must stop here for a moment to manipulate the stone gargoyles
  • (3:31:14) One problem here is, that the effect of the jump potion is still on, so I can't jump over the snake. If you think some death looks badly used, look again or try doing better yourself. :)
  • (5:36:52) Just like in most games, you can shoot only 3 shots at a time
  • (5:54:17) Usually you die when the health is 0, but sometimes not!
The boss fights are hard to optimize because of the many factors included. It is usually the best thing to just cause as much damage as fast as possible. However, there are some problems. For example, sometimes, when you kill the 1st boss, the game gets jammed completely. The 2nd boss can be killed faster, but then you can't collect the one piece of treasure so fast as it will fall through floor or explode to the right. The 3rd boss moves in very long patterns, not updating it's view very often.
Tricks and programming errors:
  • Fast turn: press up before you turn to skip part of the turning animation
  • Bomb jumping: use the impact of the bomb to jump higher
  • Bomb climbing: get the bomb and shoot continuously to go up
Honestly, I tried to be perfect, but failed. If I had time, I would improve this immediately by 1 second. The result would not look essentially different because the tiny 2-frame mistakes are evenly distributed to the whole movie. This may also be my imagination, because I've lost some objectivity in the playing process.
This movie is the 3rd version I made. I used "gens_movie_test9c.exe". My basic playing speed was 3% (and frame advance sometimes).
  • uses no passwords
  • aims for fastest time
  • takes damage to save time
  • uses death as a shortcut (edit: 11 total deaths)
  • abuses programming errors in the game
Ok, hopefully all crucial information is correct. I'm very curious about the possible mistakes I don't see myself. Lots of comments wanted! :)

I like this. It has speed and dancing and glitches and lots of death. I counted 11 deaths which is probably some kind of new record here. You should mention something about it in the submission text.

Crappy game played very good! :D An instant YES-vote. It became very entertaining towards the end with wicked poses, dances and glitches. Very good job Aqfaq!

That WAS pretty interesting, especially all the dieing and how well you used them lives. I don't really know about improvments but this looks very good now so I'll vote yes.

Is there a Gods for SNES as well? I remember some game magazine claim it was one of the hardest games ever. I haven't watched this but the time sounds impressive.

Yes, there is Gods for SNES as well. My friend owned it back in the days. I have no contact with him these days though. :)

Nice, YES-votes. Well, that's not so strange because I followed the guidelines very carefully when I made this movie. I'm getting more self-confident, so I even voted YES for my own movie. Ah, but I still feel like an amateur. Anyway, this is fun. Maybe I'll start some other project in the future. :) Hmmm. Gods may be very difficult game on SNES. At least the invulnerability doesn't last so long. The 3rd and 4th bosses are the most difficult parts of the game, I think. The levels themselves aren't so bad when you know what to do.

I'd like for more people to take a look at this, since I think it's very good. You know a movie where the player dies about once every minute cannot be bad. :) It takes "uses death to save time" to a whole new level. Also, I'd like to ask the reason for the person who voted meh.

After having met the salesman the second time, and completing "world one", you die once, causing you to backtrack. What is the reason for this? Also, is the side from which the merchant enters fixed, or is it dependant on the direction you are facing? If it's the latter, I see a second or two of improvement by manipulating from where he enters. Very entertaining run and a great addition from a newcomer :) Hope to see more of your material :)

>After having met the salesman the second time, and completing "world one", you die once, causing you to backtrack. What is the reason for this? That death (first after salesman) doesn't cause him to backtrack. He starts in the same position as he died. There is a death later around 3:30 which causes trackback, I'm guessing it's just for invulnerability and new health reasons (to not die later in an even worse place). >Also, is the side from which the merchant enters fixed, or is it dependant on the direction you are facing? If it's the latter, I see a second or two of improvement by manipulating from where he enters. It's fixed. Sometimes there are walls and holes in the other direction.

Heheh, thanks Omnipotenczy. If I had known about it I would have written something more festive. But I guess it represents what I do here pretty well. :) I will now celebrate my thousandicity with a bowl of milk and cereals.

Hey! Thanks! The reasons for all dying are health, help bonuses, invulnerability and as Truncated said: "to not die later in an even worse place". I tried to do many things, but dying was always the best approach. To improve this movie significantly: 1. Find a way to kill bosses instantly (Power Blade style). They have 0 health when they appear. The problem is that weapons disappear when they fly offscreen. (So, this is probably impossible.) 2. Find better shortcuts with the bomb. For example to the boss at 3-3. (This is probably not going to work.) 3. After arriving to the final boss room, don't make the boss appear. Instead jump down to the hole where it comes from to complete world 4-1. Then the game gets pretty glitched and you can't stop laughing. Then try to complete world 4-2 by walking and jumping randomly. This all can be done faster than killing the boss! All you have to do now is complete world 4-3 with this method. (Probably impossible...) Hey, I'm starting to be pretty close to 1000 also!

I think the death I meant was that one, but it seems to be intentional, although it is not clear as to how. Anyhow, my vote is Yep.

I made some extra fun for all those who enjoy glitches. :) These sick things can be performed only in the end of the game. Use my savestates so you don't have to watch the whole movies. And try not to laugh too much... I LOVE this movie. Even though I've never played the game, I was entertained the whole time. The dancing on the final boss was funny as hell. Great job!

What can I say... thanks a lot guys. I really hope to have the possibility to create more (and better) stuff in the future. Improving Gods may be on my list someday, but not yet. I learn new things about time attacking every week, so there's no reason to make 11:39 only to see that 11:35 is possible and so on... And please someone, help poor qbproger with the audio problem! BTW, I haven't downloaded a single AVI myself because I like the smaller files. :)

put links to the rom or something. I'm not going to search those clumsy rom sites everytime a new speedrun is out. or (much much much) better yet, use avi.

First of all, posting of ROMs are against the rules. Secondly, the whole idea of the voting process is to decide if the game gets to be made into an AVI. Since this one has passed and been put on the published list, I would suggest viewing the published movie entry to get the AVI.

check the avi. It's an mkv.
