The last boss's 1st form was annoying with its randomness. I believe it could be improved by several more frames, but right now, I can't seem to obsolete it.
Here's the WIP.
The lack of movement during the boss battle was to avoid the RNG from changing.
Encode of the latest WIP by jlun2:

The "real" gameplay begins at around 1:57.
The encode is also downloadable on Mediafire.
And ... I liked this movie too!
I managed to improve the entrance of the last stage by 1 frame, and the second....room/trail by 9 frames. I also reordered the rooms/trails to complete due to the fact it appears slightly faster Nevermind, after some tests, it's actually slower.
Wip
Edit: Managed to save a total of 14 frames before the last trail/room. It finishes the rooms in the same order as the published run due to the fact that its actually the fastest order.
WIP
Any ideas for further improvement of the last two rooms in the WIP would be appreciated.
^^
Thanks.
Since the autoscroller is mostly unhexable, can someone please help me find more improvements? BTW, I managed to save 2 frames; now a total of 16 frames ahead of the published run.
WIP
Hey jlun2, how is progress? I just wanted to ask since I think I found a fairly big improvement.
STUFF
By pressing start, you will avoid the fadeout that happens when talking to Moe (The Clam). This saves 32 frames. Im not sure if its optimal though so be careful!

Nice find! I'm suprised how much this improved the published run despite being a part that involves a conversation. Thanks!
Also, about the progress, I was a bit busy with school and redoing the Spongebob/4 swords TAS, so I didn't go far. But with this trick, I think the rooms might still be improveable, so those will be checked. Thanks again. =D
Sonikkustar, I added your improvement to the run, plus saved several more frames on the second last room due to somewhat different route. It is now 61 frames ahead of the published run.
WIP
I saved 2 more frames + managed to hex in the autoscroller from the published run. Are there anymore improvements that are possible?
WIP
If it's ok, I'll continue to the boss.
I stumbled across this thread again, and decided to finish the run! But now I'm stuck at the first form of the boss. I can't seem to repeat what I did for the first hit.
If anyone wants to help, here's the wip.
Oh, and since I only had vba-v24m-svn422 on my documents, I resynced everything and redid the autoscroller before attempting the boss. So the run only works on that version.
Edit: Btw, I have a feeling that the parts before it can still be improved. I'll try right now.
Edit 2: I was right. I skipped the autoscroller stage. LOL
I reached the boss room nearly 4000 frames faster! LOL!
Hax
Neat trick, right? Took me forever to find this! Now how do I beat the last boss...
Edit: Oh, and I believe there might be an improvement somewhere in the first stage or something.
There is. LOL
Ok, an update. These are the things I've tried to make this goal easier:
-Do demo glitch, start a new game in file 2, and use save glitch to smuggle spin move without overriding the save (Fail)
-Do demo glitch, start a new game in file 2, and use save glitch to unlock photo book characters I've missed with the demo glitch (too long)
-Don't do the demo glitch (way too long)
-Don't do the save glitch (even longer)
-Glitchless (Hope you guys enjoy those auto-scrollers that contribute to 0% of the goal)
So I'm going to try to do the demo glitch, start a new game in file 2, and use save glitch in File 1 to skip stuff in File 2. I hope this works.
Edit: Ok, I've tested it and it doesn't work. I did manage to drag whatever characters I've encountered that couldn't otherwise be seen again into File 1, so I guess I would have to do the second choice.
I did notice that on a new game, pausing takes 5 lag frames, and on a new game+, it takes 6. Maybe if I can find the point where it'll take 6 lag frames to pause, then I can use File 1 to help me.
Btw, here's a list of characters that are missed in the demo:
Stage 1 - 9 characters
1, 2, 3
Stage 2 - 21 Characters
25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30
Stage 3 - 20 Characters
43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50
Stage 4 - 26 Characters
66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76
Stage 5 - 29 Characters
96, 97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 105
Stage 6 - 22 Characters
123, 124, 125, 126, 127
Stage 7 - 28 Characters
148, 149, 150, 151, 152, 153, 154, 155
Stage 8 - 24 Characters
175, 176, 177, 178, 179
Stage 9 - 23 Characters
200, 201, 202
I found out that the save glitch works best when either the save glitch is used on the same file or when used with a file with less progress is used to overwrite a file with more progress.
I guess the best way to do this is to start a new file on 1, save glitch it to copy to 2, then use file 2 to glitch file 1.
I managed to beat skip the 2nd stage boss like this. This needs further testing.
Edit: Skipped all the way to the boss of the 3rd stage. Now on the ice stage, which is giving me trouble. That's because for some reason, the ice stage is very difficult to glitch; the most I could do is make doors appear that lead to (slightly) further into the stage. This does seem to make an interesting "all worlds" run though. :P
Recently stumbled across my old TAS file from way back in April 2009, which made me think of this thread, lots of progress made it seems
Recorded that ancient unfinished TAS and plopped on youtube
Reading up on this thread, what seems to be the progress? Given up a playthrough in favor for a 100% run, looking for better time saving tricks?
Which emulator you using? Playing the video through v23.2 it desyncs around 12000 frames or so, which then Stafy then proceeds to just run into walls for no reason, random pausing, random resets that lead nowhere or showing no sign of progress.
The same as the published run - vba-v24m-svn422. Don't worry about the glitch being emulator specific; it works on both the one you listed and v24.
Edit: And by glitch I meant both the demo glitch and the save glitch.
