Solstice TAS any% by AndiHoffi & Randil

  • Emulator used: FCEUX 2.2.0
  • Aims for fastest possible time
  • Genre: Puzzle
This run is 18 frames faster than the previous run by Randil.

Terminology

I will refer to rooms by their room number, stored in RAM address $0015.

Improvements

  • The smallest possible improvement of 2 frames in room 82 (3:59).
  • The main improvement of 16 frames that made me do the run in room 223 (5:00). Here I use a hidden stone.

What did I learn?

This is the first time, I touched the TAS-editor and I am still amazed by the precise work Randil did. Special thanks to him for doing this great run (that I copied almost entirely) and providing me with some hints. Especially the RAM addresses made everything much easier.

May I suggest a screenshot?

Frame 18105

FractalFusion: Added Randil into player fields as well.

If you copied an entire run, they are a co-author.

How can I aknowledge that? I tried my best thanking the author in the publication. Is there anything else I can (and should) do?

It's common when people submit runs where most of the input has been copied from another player's TAS to submit it with the author name "(you) & (old TAS player)". In this case it means that the author name in the submission comments should be changed to "AndiHoffi & Randil's Solstice ... ". Personally I don't really mind, though in a way it would be reasonable to keep me as co-author if all but a few frames of the input is mine. Oh, and by the way, nice TAS. :) While looking through your TAS, I've tried to spot further improvements. I found a 2 frame improvement in room 197 (around frame 8151), by jumping on the spikes here. Unfortunately, I got a 1 frame longer loading time in a subsequent room, but I still squeezed out 1 frame! http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4829715/hoffi-solstice_imp_v1.fm2 I'll revise the run a few more times, maybe I can find more improvements.

Done. I hope I did it it right. I don't want to step on anybodies toes here :) But this does not matter anyway since you found another improvement and I will cancel this submission. Let's go back to the solstice-thread and see if we can find more of them.

It's an interesting question (and something I don't remember ever having been discussed very profoundly) how much one can copy from another person's TAS without offending their rights or feelings (especially if you do it without asking.) Is there any license that the keypress files must be submitted under? It would make sense if they had to use eg. a creative commons license.

Don't TASs usually get revised instead of outright cancelled when a minor change to the movie file needs to be made?
