After 5 years of work, it's finally here!

This is an improvement of 09:04.17 over the previous movie by Rikku.
For comparison, the fastest non-TAS run (by Siglemic) is 1:44:23 (as of 11/12).

Yay, done at last! I didn't start TASing this game that long ago, so I have the least experience, but I really want to thank the rest of the team for letting me join and participate in this great project. It's been a really nice experience for me and I'm hoping that everyone enjoys watching the run as much as we did making it!

Yo, yo, yo! I must say, like Jeremiah and David, I'm really happy to finally see this completed run in the workbench. I had a blast TASing this awesome game with such awesome people.
I'd like to point out that a big part of this project was done by the Japanese TASers. When they were working on the "120 Stars" TAS, they used to go back a lot to redo and improve earlier stars, since they were working on a "perfect" TAS. We (sonicpacker and myself) got tired of being left aside the project, seeing how slow the progress on it was and decided to go along and do our own TAS. MKDasher later joined us. Not gonna lie, we used a lot of their inputs during the making of this movie (but always with permissions) and "quickly" finished the masterpiece that you're about to watch. Of course, some improvements were found during the 3-month period we worked on the project, but it's nothing too big.
We would like to thank all the Japanese SM64 TASers for their hard work and hope they will be able to improve this movie with a more "perfect" v2. Good luck guys!

Well it's about damn time. No, but really, working with the community towards finishing this run has given me the best time of my life and I couldn't have asked for a better way to spend my teenage years. I've met so many awesome people and have had the best partners to work with. I'm thankful beyond words and I hope everyone that watches the TAS has a great time! I could go on and write a book about it, but I'll let the run speak for itself. And remember, SM64 isn't even near dead. Stay tuned, haha!

Known Improvements

Of course, in every long TAS, even with the highest standards and level of optimization, nothing is ever perfect. Here's a list of the known improvements. Most were discovered when we were already too far into the run to go back. They will be included in a new version made by a different team of TASers.

  • CCM:
    • About 18 frames can be saved on "Frosty Slide for 8 Red Coins".
    • 3 frames lost on "Li'l Penguin Lost".
    • 1 VI/s is savable during the "100 Coins" star.
  • BoB:
    • About 1 second can be saved on the "100 Coins" star with better coins manipulation.
  • WF:
    • "Chip Off Whomp's Block" is improvable by 3 frames.
    • "To the Top of the Fortress" is improvable by 7 frames.
    • 2 frames lost on the "100 Coins" star due to luck manipulation.
  • DDD:
    • 0"30 seconds lost due to random lag.
    • Extra frame lost for better lag manipulation.
  • LLL:
    • 1 frame lost for better luck manipulation.
  • HMC:
  • BBH:
    • 1 frame lost for better luck manipulation.

Isn't it 59.94, not 59.85? At 59.94FPS, the time would be 1:20:46.37. So it's emulation inaccuracy here.

Because you need to choose the manta star from star select or else you can't get it.

Where are those figures from? 59.94fps is the NTSC field rate, and consoles definitely don't have to run at that rate (and most probably don't).

The N64 runs at some magical internal speed which isn't documented or known by much of anyone from what I can tell. 59.94 is the NTSC refresh rate not the N64 rate. Additionally the console will occasionally lag while doing things (100% cpu/gpu usage type situations). Mupen doesn't properly account for this lag and I'd honestly be shocked if any emulator except maybe bsnes accounts for this. From a technical standpoint it's pretty difficult to do so. I'm kinda disappointed that it loses the magical 1:20 number for a 120 star run on the console but oh well. At least it synchs properly.

Do I understand correctly that (analog) TVs actually adjust their own refresh rate to the TV signal that they receive (I'm assuming that within certain limits)? In other words, while standard NTSC TV broadcast uses 59.94 FPS, another video source (such as a console) could use a slightly different rate and the TV would simply adjust to it automatically?

Correct. It has to be done this way, since accurate enough timing sources would be hideously expensive (if available at all).

Yeah, when two things are communicating, it's nearly always best to have one of them drive a common clock. So either the TV or the console has to keep time for the other; the way it ended up working out is that the console does the timings. This also explains why you can damage a TV via turning up the refresh rate too high on a computer connected to it. Doing so is effectively overclocking the TV, and they have the same problems when overclocked as any other piece of hardware would.

The 59.94 rate is also only for interlaced video, which is not what the N64 typically outputs. 240p video would have a slightly higher fps, something like 60.05. Or at least, I vaguely remember reading that somewhere.

Analog TVs are generally tolerant to sync timing to some 10% or so. For instance, I know some arcade PCBs output 54p signal; perhaps there were some that went even lower.

One of the most incredible TASes ever produced. Incredibly good work. I've watched this at least 3 times, and each time I'm blown away by the remarkable level of optimization.
