When encoding with virtualdub I actually get horrible quality with this codec, at least at high speeds the video gets totally blurred at 500kbps. I was encoding a sonic movie and when I compared to quietust video for example, there appears to be a dramatic difference in quality when encoding with mencoder. I'd like to try mencoder but I don't get it working..

When I encoded Sonic 3, I adjusted the settings manually many many times in order to get as good quality/size ratio as I could. Quietust's video, Sonic 2, was apparently encoded by Phil...

I have a 1733 MHz Athlon. A typical 300kbit/s 256x240 video encoded with x264 uses about 12%-15% CPU to decode and display, using a recent mplayer. With emulator playback captures, there's no excuse to scale the video to a larger resolution. On a ~645kbps 720x352 video (unresized cropped dvd widescreen movie) I get about 45% CPU usage. On ~700kbps 720x480 video (unresized uncropped 4:3 dvd video) I see up to 50% CPU usage. libavcodec-based players (mplayer, ffdshow, vlc) using an older libavcodec offer h.264 decoding that is both slower and buggier. If you use windows, you can get a more recent ffdshow here: http://www.aziendeassociate.it/cd.asp?dir=/ffdshow Likewise there are recent mplayer builds for windows: http://www.aziendeassociate.it/cd.asp?dir=/mplayer As for encoding: if you are getting better video quality with XviD, you're simply doing something wrong. XviD is of course excellent for an ASP codec but on "typical" source, you should be able to match its quality with x264 using 5%-30% less bitrate. There is a guide for using mencoder to encode videos with x264; while it's neither complete nor entirely up-to-date, it will at least point you in the right direction.

Let's all chat about how this codec works... Look, guys. I have just spent an entire hour and a half trying to find this [curse] codec, and nothign has worked. Yes, I tried Media Player Classic. Yes, I upgraded to the new version of Quicktime. Yes, I downloaded an x264 file. Nothing works. Now I know there's something really obvious that I'm missing, but seriously, don't just go "download this!" and give me a link to something I already have, or a broken link. Suppose you run Windows. What would YOU do? Is it theoretically possible to run the movie in Winamp, or Windows Media Player, or Quicktime? Ever? And how? I mean, come on. If you're going to go to the trouble of making a FAQ and everything, at least tell us what to do if you make a new codec! I want to watch these videos! [threat]. [threat]. [bad threat].

Whether or not you're able to view a movie doesn't depend on which application you use. You need to get the codec. Judging by your story, you haven't downloaded it yet. http://tasvideos.org/CodecProblems.html

According to a program I have that tells you what codecs you have, I do not have a codec with FOURCC of H264 (which is what the video apparently uses) but I do have one with FOURCC of x264 (vesion 5.2.1.1338, filename x264vfw.dll). According to what all you guys keep saying, they are the same, but none of my video playing programs accept that. The three speedruns I'm having issues with are: boulderdash-speedrunv2-ctrlaltdestroy.avi knsonic3-speedrunv2-gavinward.avi supermarioworld-tas-flagitious,viper7.avi That same program also has a feature that tells you what codec the videos use, and these videos unanimously use a codec called "h264" which is neither recognized nor supported. Yes, I have already installed x264, but no, it didn't fix the problem.

Hi ~ qqwref, if you have already followed Phil's direction installing the ffshow. Maybe you should check the H.264 as a libavcodec. See the Snapshot

download the libav codec pack thing indicated on the FAQ from this site. after installation, all players should have h264, i think. i had trouble installing it too, i dont know if its paying off the trouble to install it for the users

I have problems now and then with this codec; I must say I liked xvid better. I wouldn't mind waiting longer to download a bigger avi if it means avoiding having these problems.

DivX6 cannot match h264 for game videos. DivX6 does not support frame dropping, which is heavily abused with h264.

I believe it's "multiple reference frames" you're talking about. The frame dropping feature is inherent to the AVI format, not x264.
