I've been wanting to get a TAS of TWW out, and I know you all want one. This may not be what you've been expecting :P
Dolphin Version: 3.0-766-dirty
  • This TAS starts with a blank Memory Card, mainly my preference for playback instead of having to make a blank file every time.
  • The chosen name is of course the fastest, I delete the character after pressing start just for fun, it doesn't affect the game at all.
  • Sidehop, then backflip off the tower saves 2 frames over the previously used 2 sidehops.
  • The superswim goes to Forsaken Fortress. While in this quadrant, time advances very quickly (1 in-game minute per frame).
  • I perform another superswim and leave the quadrant at the beginning of night (18:00)
  • The superswim takes me to Windfall Island.
  • The superswim right after entering the quadrant is to allow the island to load.
  • Because it is night, the cutscene for entering Windfall is glitched because of a different set of actors. This causes the cutscene to end early and the "Windfall Island" label to be left up.
  • Talking to the mailbox while in this glitched cutscene causes the game to softlock. The game no longer accepts any inputs and it is impossible to finish the conversation with the mailbox, which never pops up.
This is pretty much it. The Japanese version was used purely because of faster text, which imo is more important than being able to read it because the lower time is better when most, if not all, people aren't watching for the text during the intro.
The primary glitch in this is the superswim. Every frame link turns around in the water, his velocity gets higher, going backwards. My frame-by-frame chart of it can be seen here: [dead link removed]

I love fastest crash runs as much as the next guy, and this is really cool and all, but it's just too much buildup for not really all that spectacular of a crash.

yeah, that. For 3 minutes of waiting, I was hoping something way more destructive than just a mailbox. Maybe the sky being corrupted with something nightmarish, with ganon's laugh being heard for all eternity while every npc rolls around you naked or somthing...

Did all of the people complaining about the "long wait" actually sit through the first five minutes of the video? There is a magical h4XX0r bug cheat exploit in youtube videos where if you click in just the right place, you can instantly skip ANY AMOUNT of the video. I guess it might be a little advanced for you guys though. In seriousness, I've never understood this complaint. If part of a run is boring, SKIP IT. No one is sitting there forcing you to watch 100% of a TAS. As for this run, it obviously won't get published right now, but it's in a category that many of us appreciate, and as others have indicated, it would be great if there were some way for this site to recognize or at least catalog runs like this, as arbitrary and stupid as they may seem to a sizable portion of the audience. Again, NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO WATCH IT.

Here's a screwball, doesn't the intro count as game choice? It's part of the game, and I chose it. On a serious note: TASes like this can be found at http://tasvideos.org/Zeupar/Crash.html. I would still like to see a demos category that would fit this in it. Also, clarification on the term softlock. Even though you cannot move around, in this game atleast, you can restart by holding B+X+Start. As far as I know, that is the definition, and I know that this would be considered a softlock by the Zelda community. I suppose it doesn't matter currently, as this won't be accepted for different reasons. I wonder if a fastest crash would do better... I'll TAS it, but until there is some sort of catagory for it, I won't waste your time. It will be quite a bit different from what I can think of, considering I know of few crashes in this game.

I am working on the any% :P. Almost done with FoF. Had to change rupee route again for being ridiculously impossible to manipulate for 5 green rupees in FoF from knocking down 2 bokoblins.

If you have to start skipping in order to not get bored (especially if you have to skip something like 90% of the TAS), that's a quite strong indication that there's something wrong with the entertainment value of the TAS.

You're skipping unskippable cutscenes, so the argument that there's something wrong with the TAS just doesn't hold here. When you start from the first chance the player has control, it's much shorter and more interesting.

Dwedit raises a very valid point about this particular case, but I disagree with you fundamentally. It is not up to a TAS author which portions of a game are entertaining to watch. I don't think we should give stars to TASes that have a few entertaining parts and a lot of boring parts, but there is nothing fundamentally /wrong/ with those TASes. I guess for you personally, clicking on a progress bar a few times is a total dealbreaker, but for me, I would much rather watch five extremely entertaining minutes in the middle of an otherwise worthless hour-long TAS than watch an hour of a TAS that is moderately amusing throughout. Luckily, this argument mostly doesn't matter anymore, since boring TASes can go in the Vault. Unfortunately, it does matter for non-vaultable runs like this one. If the tiers are to remain unchanged, I would want this to be a moon, but I don't think that's a great outcome. I would much rather have a Demo category like the one Brandon proposed.

I wonder when we'll see a proper Wind Waker run using that swim glitch?
I am slowly (but surely) working on it. I've been going so slowly because of the possibility of barrier skip http://zeldaspeedruns.com/tww/Miscellaneous/barrier-skip. I'll still finish the current TAS if it is found and give it some good goal, like all temples or something, but barrier skip really saps my motivation. Right now I am about 10 minutes into the any% TAS, I won't be releasing a WIP for a while, and idk how many I will release. I will not release WIPs too far into the game, just so it doesn't seem like everything has been seen already.
I was a big believer in barrier skip once, but by now I really doubt that it's going to happen. This game has been destroyed in the past year and we still aren't any closer. The barrier is just imba and Hyrule doesn't have anything that could help (doors, chests, swimable water). So I really don't think you have to worry about that.

I still believe it will happen someday.

Are we now accepting anything that anybody submits? There are no minimum standards? I mean, like, completing the game or something. If I submit the fastest run that makes Link perform the Chicken Dance, it goes automatically to the Vault? The fastest run that makes him stare at a recently painted wall to dry? We no longer consider game choice as a reason for rejection, but surely we still consider goal choice? There has to be some rational limit to what's accepted. (My point is that if a non-game-completion goal results in a 5-minute run where 90% of the run is boring and causes people to skip it, I think that's rather telling about whether we should accept it or not.)

I'm strongly on the "entertainment" side of the fence and I do think that a lot of rigid rules can hurt the TAS community, but that said, I think "actually completes the game" is a pretty damn important rule. Voted no.

Yes, there are minimum standards. In particular, only "any%" and "100%" runs are eligible for the Vault, so anything that fails to complete the game is not.

I don't think you should count on something what maybe will not happen, you must continue your path regardless.

Please. You didn't waste anyone's time. even if the softlock itself is boring, seing Link swimming thought the ocean still is amazing.

I think you missed part of what I wrote. I explicitly pointed out that the Vault has nothing to do with this particular movie:

So, we should throw CRAP (Crappy, Ridiculous and Pointless) TAS's into a new "Demo" category instead?

No, we should throw interesting demos that get community approval into a new "Demo" category. I happen to think that this movie qualifies; if you don't, you are free to vote no and express your opinion in the comments, and a judge will hopefully take both of our positions into account when making a decision.

I think that even if a new demo category is set up (which is not something I or most other people here are opposed to), I still think that the entertainment value of such demos should be pretty high. They should be fun to watch all the way through.

Warp, I sincerely hope that someday you embrace the forbidden time manipulation powers granted to you by video progress bars... As a practical consideration, it would be neat if it were common for movie descriptions to contain links to timecodes within the youtube encodes (or other encodes if the feature is available) at which the run becomes more generally palatable.

While we are at it, why don't we just throw all the principles of TASing out of the window and start outright editing the videos? Just cut the boring parts away. Add some catchy music and special effects. Disco lights.

Okay! I've always been a huge fan of cutsceneless encodes of Zelda games. As long as the original is there for verification, I'm all for separate videos made more friendly for the viewing audience in any way possible - camhacks, input overlays, commentary, cutscene removal, bookmarks, whatever.

So what exactly is the point of the TAS anymore if the video is not legit?
