Emulator: Fceu by blip
  • fast as possible
  • damage to save time
With over 10 different runs attempted at this game across 6 authors, Kung Fu is a simple platform game that has seen a lot of competition. This version uses a new random manipulation technique to beat the first level one time unit faster than Phil & Genisto's most recent record.
How is time saved?
By using a backwards jump, the game's randomness can be manipulated without costing too much time. In fact, you can make certain enemies disappear. In level 2, I used a backwards jump to make the falling dragon capsule disappear from the right side of the screen; this avoids having to get hit by it. It was also used on the last boss to change his attack pattern. I did these things also to make the run look more entertaining because I was tired of seeing all the kung fu runs look like exact replicas of each other with only just one or two changes.
Can Kung Fu be improved in the future?
In terms of time units, this run is extremely difficult to improve upon. Even with extreme randomness abuse I found it very difficult to improve the time units of the later levels. This is perhaps the main reason why Phil and Genisto's version remained unchallenged for so long. In terms of frames, it did cost me some frames here and there to demonstrate things like the level 2 glitch, but I did it for the sake of variety. After 8 versions, one gets sick of a game easily :P.
Time Unit Summary:
  • Level 1: 1548
  • Level 2: 1557
  • Level 3: 1551
  • Level 4: 1545
  • Level 5: 1549
Credits:
I would like to acknowledge the following authors who have spent time on this game:
  • Arc: The first to make a run of Kung Fu.
  • Lezard: Improvements in levels 2 and 5.
  • Michael Fried: Taking damage in level 4 time saving tactic.
  • Phil and Genisto: Boss 3 and 4 strats.
and also thanking Phil for converting this run for me from Virtuanes .VMV to .FCM

I have already finished the game at 3:42,never submitted, but with this improvement I will try to do it better. I will study that game further, especially the final stage. Easier to test with a better emu that supports 60 FPS, not 20 like it was before. Not true for VirtuaNES that had always supported 60 FPS. :P

Is that true? Why did you not submit it?

What's most important? Time units or realtime? I'd vote for realtime actually but that's also depending on time units. Oh well, just my personal thought.

I didn't found it more impressive( At that time, I didn't care about real time). And there was some more error(s) apparently ;) Btw, it is erased. A short game like that will not take long to do but I am currently busy. So I vote yes. I didn't help Deviance to convert his file for being obsoleted the same day or tomorrow :P

Kung Fu has always been a battle of time units, and since I couldn't improve upon my last version in terms of the time units of later levels, I took some time to show different "routes". I think if any movie obsoletes for this game, it should be in time units because that involves using new strats and would truly be an impressive accomplishment.

I've got the intuition that the last level can be improved but it was discouraging to test at 20 FPS. So, we let it that way. I will see it myself and will do it faster in real time.

damn this was a fast encoding :) Although I was wondering if this video has been encoded with this new codec? Or will you guys only use the codec for long movies?

I haven't watched any of the Kung-Fu movies yet, but I played this game a lot in my C64. It had a cool glitch that allowed me to skip the boss at stage 4 (the magician), just by making him retrogress until I was close enough to the stair. I don't know if that could be done on this version. Most of the tricks I have abused in the past don't work on the games on this site (damn!).
No.

You run to the left and jump kick a few times, then you run to the right and jump kick a few times, then you run to the left and jump kick a few times, then you run to the right and jump kick a few times, then you run to the left and jump kick a few times, then it's over.......... and the music was lame. I vote no because I did not like watching this movie, and there's not really anything about the movie that I did like.
