Not kidding. Apparently, not only Megadrive and Dreamcast enjoy postmortem development. :P http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2012/02/new_snes_title_on_the_way_in_2013 It says it's going to be a run'n'gun compatible with all regions. Actually you can even pre-order it if you want.

ha, that’s awesome but it is a bit pricey XD what are the production costs it speaks of?

Most likely the cost of producing the actual carts. Since SNES carts aren't mass-produced anymore, such orders won't be exactly as cheap as they were in, say, 1993.

I'm thinking that the increased cart sales, combined with the unlikelyhood of anyone actually still possessing a fully functional SNES these days, would effectively doom this game to being emulated only; there couldn't possibly be enough of a demand for it to justify production costs. Of course, if it's as high quality as they seem to be implying, it could be prime TAS material. It'd just be kind of tragic if the company doesn't actually make money off of the game.

You have no idea how mistaken you are. Many old consoles are incredibly durable, and various kinds of oldschool gamers, collectors, and speedrunners have their consoles intact. The second-hand market for these things is really active. In fact my own SNES still works, I just don't play it.

they say there was such high demand, they doubled the production to 600 catridges that must mean they’re making a profit

I'm aware of console durability, especially those made of the mythical, rumored 'Nintendium'; it's the matter of anyone actually still possessing said consoles in the hopes that a game would show up so many years in the future. So most people are looking at not just the price of the cartridge, but also the price of buying a new SNES (likely used, possibly not in the greatest shape), a controller... going off the cheapest prices for each of these on eBay at the time of this post, this amounts to $90-$100... for one game. Most people are hesitant about buying Collector's Edition versions of games at that price for the current generation of systems, let alone one from three generations back. I really do hope that the company, Super Fighter Team, makes enough money to justify production. But I'm skeptical about the situation, with all the factors in play here. The markets that they're selling seem incredibly narrow.

What makes you think people will by a new SNES to play this game? It's wanted by those who already have one. There are way more than 600 people with a working SNES who like SNES games.

Then it's a game that exists solely for the market of people who already own an SNES in perfect working condition, still play said SNES, and are still willing to pay $70 on a new game that we still don't know if it's any good or not. This doesn't exactly disavow my skepticism.

I dunno, even considering all that I think selling 600 units should not be much of a problem. Collectors will buy it, some old school enthusiasts will buy it, and then some will buy it for the novelty factor. That should probably have it covered, I think.

I hope so. I'd hate to see the game be reduced to pirate bait, since I like seeing small-time companies hit it big. One thing is for sure, though; we still have a whole year before we can see how well it holds up, let alone how TAS-viable it is.

I don't think this is a 'new' game in the way that Pier Solar was. Nightmare Busters was a cancelled game made in 1994, the ROM has been available for some time and I'm pretty sure there has been a repro run of this game before. They say they are going to make some changes to the ROM though; still, that makes it a hack, in my opinion, rather than a new game. Also, I'm not sure what is meant by an 'official' release (this surely won't be licensed by nintendo?).

Just so you know, the market you described isn't entirely empty. *runs off to order a copy of the game*

I'd prefer a new DKC, a SMW3 or a Final Fantasy instead but sounds interresting ^^
