Progress update (no smv, though) I'm now strating the Pyramid, and the 100% is now 3100 frames (51 seconds and 40 frames) FASTER than the any% run currently published. Repeat. The 100% run is 3100 frames (51 seconds and 40 frames) FASTER than the any% run at the start of the pyramid. Even though it's currently faster than the any% by more than 50 seconds, it will fall behind when I go to the secret dungeon. At least ... I'm expecting it to fall behind when I go to the secret dungeon. I've been surprised more than once while making this run. Anyway ... I'm kind of surprised by how many people (1) responded to my last WIP. I'll just assume that the other people just had no comments because it R0XX0RZ!!! ... it's better to think like that than to think that nobody cares about my run ... heh

I used to have this game when I was a child. Don't remember what happened to the Cartridge, but I know I never beat the game. :3 This remains one of my most memorable games. ;3 So I care about that TAS. :3

You seem to be the only other person to care about it though ... The other person is Nitrodon, who helps me with luck manipulation and many other things.

I didn't know about this run until now, so... I care. :) I'm pretty much a newbie to TASing but I can certainly appreciate a fine run.

I care, too. I just haven't been around for the past 2 months. Boot camp was... an experience, definitely. Anyway, the WIP looks great. Awesome job on that, especially being faster than the any% and all. Keep up the great work, Hal, I expect greatness out of you. :P

Well I finally got around to making an account (been following speedrunning for ~2 years) so I could say that I care! This is one of my favourite games of all time (I still have my original copy which has been completed MANY times), and I would love to see it absolutely destroyed with a top-quality TAS. Definitely looking forward to seeing this one; keep up the good work!!

For my part, that's actually how it is. I've been watching the WIPs, but I have nothing useful to say, and I'm not a big fan of posting just to offer encouragement. Keep it up. :)

I care. I watched the Mu WIP and it was very impressive that you're faster with the red jewels. Since it must be pretty radically improvable, do you intend to revisit any% sometime?

I also care. I've played the game quite a bit in the past, and it was actually one of the few games I actually beat on my old console. I recall how insane the secret dungeon's boss was (though ironically, in Soul Blazer he's super-easy). I'd really like to see you beat him without suffering any damage. My strategy for beating him would be to run over to the top side where the boss is, then slide into him, hoping that I'll damage him and that he won't harm me.

To be honest, I have no idea ... I guess I could though, since it's REALLY improvable and I have really strong proof about it being so badly done. I don't know ... maybe I will improve it someday. Note that I would collect the herbs necessary for the raft scene though, because that's a huge time saver. We'll see...

* UPDATE * Once again, no smv for you guys, but I wanted to keep you informed on the progress. Right now, the Pyramid is done and the mummy Queen is dead. The 100% is now 244 frames (4 seconds and 4 frames) SLOWER than the any%. That had to be expected because of the red jewels in the Pyramid. A lot of them are far from the normal path and require backtracking and stuff. Still... it's a pretty amazing feat to be only 4 seconds begind the any% when I'm so near the end of the game. Problem is, the 100% won't ever be faster than the any% again because of the secret dungeon. Anyway ... so what's left? Tower of Babel, Secret Dungeon, Comet. That's it. It's a lot of boss fights though, but these ones tend to be easy to TAS. I expect to be done with the TAS in about a week. After that, I'll take some time to write extensive commentaries (much like what I did for the any%), and THEN I'll submit this baby.

Nitrodon just informed me that I might be able to gain back those 4 seconds in the re-match against the bosses, mainly against Sandworm. That would mean that the 100% would be equal to the any% for the whole game (if we don't count the secret dungeon) It's not as simple as that though ... since I haven't picked up the jewels in Dao yet (it's going to be faster to pick them when I get back to Dao from the Tower of Babel). The snake game and the secret dungeon will make the 100% longer than the any%. But still... it's cool that if there wasn't any secret dungeon and no snake game, the 100% would be just as long as the any%. If I had to guess how long the 100% is going to be, I'd say between 2:10 and 2:13. I think that's going to be pretty accurate. It would make the 100% from 4 to 7 minutes longer than the any%.

So I guess this movie will be obsoleting the any% even though they have different goals, huh?

No it won't obsolete it. The 100% will be longer than the any% because of the remaining red jewels in Dao and the secret dungeon. If it wasn't for those two things, though, it would obsolete it.

Anyone interested in seeing an improvement to the currently published run? For some reason (probably nostalgia) I've been finding myself enamored with this game, and wouldn't mind giving a TAS improvement a spin. My only concern is there isn't much to improve besides optimizing movement and using the pause glitch for orbs.

There are people who would be interested in seeing an improvement. Are you working on one now?

What's the pause glitch? Are the orbs you mention the ones dropped from enemies?

In areas where you must kill enemies to progress, normally you have to wait for the graphical effect of the "orb" that spawns from an enemy to fly into and destroy whatever blocks your way. By pausing and unpausing as soon as the enemy is killed, it becomes possible to travel through the terrain before it is finished exploding. I assume this is the glitch he refers to. Probably saves a lot of frames over the run.
I will not use self-reference in my signature.

I started work on this a while ago, before Vykan even posted about an improvement. For whatever reason, I put it aside for a long time. Well, I started working on it again, and since I got past the first Mystic Statue, I thought I'd post a WIP! Here it is: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/681031108/dessy-gaia.smv A video of this file can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz7wpj7yXQw Let me know what you think! (Nitrodon, I've heard your criticisms already.)

If I remember correctly you can 1-cycle the Inca Ruins boss if you are Freedan, or does the time it takes to become Freedan eliminate any gain from it?

Yes you can one-cycle him as Freedan. It takes 291 more frames to get him and do the one-cycle than it does to just use Will and get a two cycle. That said, the two-cycle strat shown here wasn't immediately obvious. I was running into trouble at first because it seems you have only about 270 frames to kill both hands in the second round if you want to get his eyes on the first vulnerability window; if you miss it, you have to wait an additional 12 seconds. The timing is incredibly tight. I think I only made it by a few frames, and only because I realized you could essentially hit both hands at the same time while they are rising at the start of the second round.
