Here's a tiny WIP, since Segment 9 of Matt Powell's TAS is rather short. Lots of optimal running, a few cool tricks, and hot camera dodging action await ye!
There's no big hurry to get this encoded, I think we should wait until after the Hind D fight is finished.

Bring out the party hats and streamers, because WE'RE FINISHED WITH DISC 1!Link to videoHere's the WIP in case you're interested. Note that I save after the first room of Disc 2, so you'll need to have both discs to watch it.
Now I think would be a better time to encode, antd :P

Man! I'm really amazed with this run! I honestly enjoyed every part of it. The fight against the ninja and the chopper brought amazing memories!
At 26:20 I can hear "Meryl" at the start of the communication, but in every other one I can't hear anything, that one is supposed to be like that or you could've skipped the very beginning like in all others?
OMG! Snake is godlike! His cloth changing and Aikido skills are amazing! Superman and Steven Seagal would be very proud!
Some parts made me lol really hard:
1-Guard: 'takes punch to the back' Huh!? What was that noise?
2-Meryl: I'll be the point.
Snake: Fuck off bitch I know what I'm doing. 'Gets another path'
3-Meryl: I'll be the point again, there are mines all around this place, I saw their location when Mantis was in my mind. 'Walks slowly and carefully making some turns around the area'
Snake: 'Runs in a straight line to her' That guy really fucked up your mind.
Amazing job so far, I can't wait to see the end of this TAS!
PSXjin supports storing information about CD-ROM swapping into the movie file, so both CDs can be done in the same run and then encoded as one encode.
AFAIK, when playing back and reaching the point where CDs are swapped, PSXjin will ask for the new ISO and then continue from there.
Vulcan Raven has been vulcanized. I used a different Nikita path on Raven this time, which ends up saving a small amount of time, and I also equip Chaff grenades one frame before Raven dies because I need them anyway for the pre-REX hangar room, and I've
Current development stage: redoing on Extreme with PSXjin v2.0.2 svn0, currently on Disc 2.

My in-game time: 0:57
My real-time (to help created a fairer comparison between my run and brazilianjoker's, my "real time" count as time after I have selected the Extreme difficulty and will be faster than my movie time by 975 frames): TBD
In-game time equivalent in Matt Powell's 1:54:02 run for SDA: 1:14
Real-time equivalent in brazilianjoker's 1:49:01 on YouTube: TBD
Ahead of brazilianjoker by: TBD.
Ahead of Matt Powell by: 0:17 in-game time (although this is an inconclusive measurement as the in-game timer rounds off minutes in the in-game clock except at the very end of the game).
Frame count: 208,384 (57m53s, does not include time spent saving in each WIP)
Rerecord count: 28,465
Why the rerecord count is so low: lots of loading times and cutscene skipping. The ratio would probably be closer if you removed the cutscene load-skip/codec conversations.

We're almost there! NOTE: Microstorage seems a bit screwy today so I uploaded the movie file to 4shared instead.
There's just REX, Liquid and the jeep escape left! It's so close I can taste it!

Hey guys,
Looks like I got a lucky break. The professor for my night class today is away this week, so I'm going to take the opportunity to live-stream me finishing the TAS of Metal Gear Solid. It'll be right here in about twenty minutes if you want to a behind-the-scenes look at how bad my TASing is >_>

Its almost a month on, but are there any plans to optimise this at all now? And if so, what areas would be easiest to optimise? I recall that Mantis was hard enough to just make possible.
In fact, I've just had a thought whilst watching the TAS again now: Can you not make the Ocelot fight faster by using C4 against him? You have one left after getting to him, and you can chase him around the room without really wasting time between shots, it seems.
Much needed update for this thread.
I guess the people who really care about MGS saw this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ADeGjtciMA
It has been a mystery for awhile until me and my best friend (Magnum66) decided to do a speed run of MGS and find some new glitches. We always wondered why it worked so this is how it is done (excuse my screaming)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNutNVtqmgw
As you can see, being damaged (what koji said) is not what causes it. Magnum66 originally found how koji's glitch happened and so began to do the same thing at the walls and this was the result. The first OOB glitch in MGS!

We are currently looking for other areas. You basically just need an area where you can "levitate" off the ground and clip inside something else.
After careful analysis and messing around with walk through walls there is only one real area that benefits from OoB in my opinion.
This area is the Darpa Chief cell. It is possible with walk through walls to activate the torture cutscene and save approximately 30 minutes on a speedrun. Actually getting OoB here is another matter.
There is an issue however. Basically, I was not able to pick up the PSG-1 or the Stinger (well you can but then you get 0/0 ammo and you can't even pickup ammo after that making it useless). I was only able to pickup the PSG-1 after I either collected the Socom, Nikita and then activated the Tank, Gray Fox, Mantis life sections (when your life bar grows). Even after this I could not get the Stinger as I either needed to first beat Ocelot and THEN glitch or not getting the extra life from initially beating Wolf is the cause which I have no idea how to trigger (e.g. all you have to do to get life from Gray Fox boss is walk into the Otacon lab room and same goes for Mantis in Commander room). So unless someone knows how to get Stinger after glitching, OoB is pretty much useless since you need it to beat the Hind and Rex. Something tells me Kojima planned for this incase someone did OoB that door. There is absolutely no other reason as to why the game would not let you pick up a weapon.

It could also be an Anti-Cheat protection. Like a Gameshark. That way the player doesn't get the level 5 (?) card early and break the game.
What happens if the PSG-1 is used after Meryl gets shot, but you don't leave? Can it be used? What happens if you OoB during that?
When TAS does Quake 1, SDA will declare war.

Funny, I remember once telling theenglishman that you can do a massive sequence break there by walking through the wall, but of course since in my mind the only way to walk through walls was by using a Gameshark code I dismissed the idea. I never checked whether the game actually stays consistent enough to beat.
Could you possibly use this for a "new game+" run using the Bandana for infinite ammo?
edit: It's unlikely that this is a cheating protection, in my mind. The guns get more ammo the higher your "level" is, right? They probably just didn't add a number to the array containing the amount of ammo you can carry for the low levels, or (more likely) kept it at zero.
I'm just guessing but I think that if you have the PSG-1 at the moment that Meryl is lying on the floor bleeding, you can use it to beat Wolf, and after you beat her Meryl will disappear without a trace, as if you actually did exit the room and collected the weapon. That seems to make the most sense to me as far as game logic goes.
If you OoB during the Wolf fight, I doubt anything will happen if you run up to the door. They probably did not add the door event in that level.
Dada, I do not know but if you can use Bandana to shoot weapons even with 0 ammo it would work. Good thinking there my friend. :)
Also funny thing is that if you OoB in any of the Wolf fights and run forward, she can hit you from outside the map automatically....
I actually have more ideas why Stinger is at 0. I am going to retry today and actually beat Ocelot to get the life and THEN call Meryll on codec because she is never actually in your codec list when you go into torture room. That just might be enough to trigger proper ammo because the only thing then we are not doing in a proper run is getting the life from a beaten first Wolf. Maybe saving and stuff in a real console would be beneficial in someway.... meh. Once we OoB we can do testing.
So far the OoB is showing promise.
The first idea is to glitch the elevator and interesting results so far.
As you can see the right lift door goes weird and in the next frames Snakes gets pushed into the floor.
The other area that is most likely to work is the Darpa bed. With days of testing we got some stuff. Blow Snake onto the bed.
Then stand up in the bed. We can get this close. It's like centimeters from Snake standing up into the bed.
Edit - So I just did a normal run with walk through walls. I beat Ocelot to get the life, called Meryll. Did everything in order and..... STILL no Stinger being equipped normally. Maybe someone else wants to give this a go? One thing I noticed is that after you get the life from Mantis, Snakes always develops a cold.
