The Ghostbusters kills Gozer after going to the local shop and travels trough 24 floors.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: FCEUX 2.1.6-interim svn2267
  • Abuses programming errors
  • Manipulates luck
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Acts slower to be faster
  • Recklessly drives (Charlie Sheen trick)

Comments

This is a (46-8=) 38 frame improvement to GlitchMan's last effort.

The list of improvements

  • Going faster on the streets
  • Buying and selling faster
  • Delaying "A" on HQ to be faster by 1 frame
  • Opens fewer doors
  • Using "AL" at last floor to gain 2 frames
  • Manipulate at boss battle
I improved 46 frames until the boss battle starts but I had more lags (8) mostly because of laggy collision detection. I tried many variations, most of the times I got a very bad (nearly instant death) at Zulu stairway so this is what I got as the fastest.
Hope you liked it, see you until my next tas =)

For encoders!

As discussed in the discussion forum, using the PAXKKLAA game genie code fixes the ending, which IMHO looks better than a pair of sloppy tits. Dwedit made a temporary encode to see it in action: http://www.dwedit.org/files/MESHUGGAH_GhostBusters_ending_restoration.mp4

Mukki: Judging...
Mukki: Accepting as an improvement to the currently published run.
Brandon: Publication underway.

Oh God, this game really is bad. Does the (J) version really just say りり? Voted yes nonetheless :)

Nice going up the tower. Yes vote.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

I just checked it out... The Japanese version has this ending text in the ROM:
   CONGLATURATION !!!
   YOU HAVE COMPLETED
     A GRATE GAME.

AND PROOVED THE JUSTICE
    OF OUR CULTURE.

  NOW GO AND REST OUR
        HEROES !
So they bothered to fix the spelling on "GRATE", but not "CONGLATURATION" when they released the US version. Do you really just get りり (riri) when you beat the game normally?

Yes. The (J) version only says, "りり" I am told, it means "Good"

The game is supposed to read the ending text out of CHR ROM, but it fails to do so because the wrong page is mapped into CHR ROM.
01:CB2B:A2 00 LDX #$00 ;should be LDX #$01
01:CB2D:20 8D 87 JSR $878D ;bankswitching routine
Use Game Genie Code PAXKKLAA to fix the ending. In this case, "riri" is a glitch, not a cryptic way of saying "good".

The only redeeming quality about movies of this game are that they are so short. I swear if going up those stairs lasted another minute...it would be grue food delight. With that being said, a nice improvement to an already short movie.

いい (ii) is "good", not りり (riri). りり doesn't mean anything other than that it sounds vaguely like "Lily". Of course, thanks to this game, りり now has a cultural meaning of its own.

For the heck of it, I made an encode that uses the PAXKKLAA Game Genie Code to fix the ending. Does not affect any of the video before joystick input ends. MP4 File 60FPS, H.264+MP3, 6.6MB

Looks good, I prefer this version instead of showing sloppy tits.

20+ floors and no elevator?
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

How amusing the shit goes down on the 23rd floor. [Cue conspiracy nuts!] Makes me wonder how doable this could be on a console... but damn amusing. Glad it had the game genie ending though. :) Yes Vote Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Its the same amount floors in the movie. The fact your need to tap buttons to progress is a very daunting prospect. I'm pretty sure you can buy additional stuff in the shops to fend off the ghosts in the stairway section, but you'll end up spending a good couple of hours doing that.

Nice improvement! Like ledauphinbenoit said, the reason this game actually makes for a somewhat entertaining TAS is that it can be beaten so quickly. Voting Yes (not a double post by Mr. Kelly R. Flewin; I'm CoolKirby and this is just my Yes vote Kirby).

I just saw the note about the Game Genie code, but I already encoded the movie without it...is it really necessary to include? I also don't think there's any precedent in doing this; otherwise, we would probably have encodes of translated ROMs, and I'm pretty sure we don't.

You could always provide a link to Dwedit's fixed ending encode in the submission. I don't think the normal encode should show something different than the replayed input file displays.

My encode is missing essential information (like credits, the disclaimer that it's a TAS, the rerecord count, etc). And I don't want to continue hosting the file on my website too long.

You could upload it to MediaFire, and Brandon could link to it from there.

The FF2/FFIV run was encoded with a Game Genie code active to not reduce music volume while the author paused during the battles. But that's the only instance I can think of.

I mostly preferred the version with "proper" credits because it makes more sense than a pair of sloppy tits as I mentioned that already. This doesn't means it has to use the game genie code, I'm ok with the original bugged credit too.
