I've seen that people have posted submissions that say "best ending" after them. What does that mean?

It means that the game is being played in a way that causes it to give a better ending sequence than normal (the best, to be precise). For instance, Sonic games often have, in their ending, a message saying that you have to collect all the Chaos Emeralds but didn't, if you don't; this counts as an ending other than the best one (although in Sonic games, "best ending" is probably the same as "100%"; the category's more useful in games where the two differ). Quite a lot of games only have one ending which counts as a win, by the way, in which case the "best ending" tag is meaningless and isn't used. If you have questions about what counts as the best ending for any specific game, you can ask in the game thread (and I guess you can also ask here, because any question can be asked here, including duplicates).

So, lemme get this straight. Is Super Mario Bros. an example of a game like this? Best ending would be to get a fire flower before World 8-4, and then kill Bowser with a fire flower before you get an axe in a Super Mario Bros. any% run. This means that the floor won't disappear, which makes a faster ending sequence. Is this an example of a "best ending" run, or do I not really get it?

No, best ending is where the post-game cinematics differ depending on what you did prior to ending input, and you picked the one deemed the 'best' (usually by being the most difficult to get, the most rewarding to see, outright bring called it, etc). A good example of bad ending/best ending is sonic 3 & knuckles. If you make it to the last stage with all the chaos emeralds, you go onto Doomsday zone and the ending is different. If you don't, you get a shorter ending and get taunted.

I also support ais523's and Patashu's mentions of the Sonic games-- they're probably the most popular games with multiple endings, as would be classified by this site. However, the quintessential "multiple ending" game to me is Chrono Trigger. Anyway, if you're still confused, watch both the Sonic 3 and Knuckles any% and the Sonic 3 and Knuckles 100% runs and take note of their endings. (And to make Patashu's point more clear the label has nothing to do with the Doomsday Zone! It's entirely about the ending cinematic, nothing whatsoever to do with gameplay.)

There are 9 different endings in GBC Survival Kids, a game where you are stuck on an island and try to get off. In some endings you die, the published run for this game merely gets off the island. The "best" ending however is marriage with another stranded kid you have to find while playing the game.

To answer your question directly, SMB1 has only the one ending, so there's no way to get a worst (or best) ending in that game.

Another Sonic game where you can get a best ending is the 8-bit version of Sonic 2, where collecting the emeralds unlock the hidden Crystal Egg Zone. The two endings are basically the same, but in the good one there is Tails running alongside Sonic, and in the bad one there is Sonic alone, which led many fans to speculate that Tails is dead. I wonder, if the 151-pokémon run is considered as a best ending, since the ending is the same as always, but the Oak message changes.

Chrono Trigger isn't a great example of "best ending" because all of the endings involve you fixing the major problem that drives the plot...and most of the alternate endings are pretty disconnected non-sequitors. It is a good example of a multiple-endings game though. The more recent Castlevania games usually have multiple endings with one definite "best" ending, though. In that case, getting the best ending typically requires you to fully explore the castle so you can figure out what's actually going on (that is, that Dracula or his flunkies are manipulating the guy who was the apparent main antagonist). Generally, "best ending" marks runs that are more complete than "any%" (which basically has as its goal getting to the credits sequence, no matter the path) but not necessarily as complete as "100%".

I definitely agree with this. I've been following all the old WIPs by Greenalink years ago, I was so sad when he switched to a glitched any%. Wario Land deserves a 100% run published alongside, it would be very different enough, in my opinion.
